In this essay, I will consider several popular articles and theories discussed by well-know philosopher and writers that will help me explain my decision to my counter group members. The scenario here is that I been asked to participate in an advisory panel for publishing company preparing a text book on “Professional Ethics and Ethics in the Workplace.” My task is to recommend that weather the next edition of the text should include a section addressing racism and discrimination in the work place. However, there are two opinions in the panel. Members of group A argue that racism is an ethical issue that should be included in the text. Racism and discrimination in the work place is still a very common issue, unfortunately. However, in most of the cases it can go unnoticed unless the employer or a person who is discriminating admits; no one can say for sure why the employer made a particular decision to hire a certain individual or gave another person a promotion. Some the examples to this are when employer fails to hire or promote someone because to their race, gender, age and sexual orientation. Whichever the case maybe, any form of racial discrimination in the workplace is strictly prohibited by federal and state laws. Regardless of these laws, numbers of people are still experiencing racial discrimination. In one of the articles by The Guardian, according to the survey conducted by The Guardian research team, “the 30% of the employees in the UK had witness or experienced racial harassment in the workplace firsthand in last year (2014).” The article also states that “a British-born, …show more content…
Someone must start including work place racism and discrimination in the ethical textbook. Otherwise, we this issue will never be addressed, and it will never come end to it if we just wait for someone to act first. In the article The Probable of Sadhu, Stephen wonders “what the Sherpas would have done if the sadhu had been a well-dressed Nepali, or what the Japanese would have done if the sadhu had been a well-dressed Asian, or what you would have done, Buzz, if the sadhu had been a well-dressed Western woman?” Similarly, do we want to wait until we experience or become a victim of work place racism and discrimination to start addressing these issues in the Ethics books? It is essential that we must work together to find a solution to deal with these ethical dilemmas. Many face discriminations because of their race and gender. Some may not be aware of it, but it might be present when applying for a job and in their wages. People of color are more likely to either be unemployed, getting paid less, or being in a position that requires fewer skills. Many studies have proved that race can determine if an applicant will get the job or not. White males are more likely to get hired because they possess two advantages: being white and being a male. What triumphs these two traits is technology. Many big corporations have gotten rid of their human employees to replace them with machines that could do their jobs better while saving the employer more money. Institutions in the businesses sector are swarming in racial discrimination, much of which is covert and difficult to detect and prove. Racial discrimination excludes, marginalizes and exploits those citizens who are discriminated against, ceasing any opportunity for economic progress and development. In today’s workplace, African Americans continue to be subjected to overt discrimination. This can take the form of ethnic jokes, racial slurs and exclusionary behaviors by Euro-American co-workers and managers. Even more disturbing is the verbal abuse, calculated mistreatment and even physical threats experienced by some African Americans while on the job. African Americans have also faced overt acts such as being reassigned to lower level projects, not receiving a promotion even though they were equally qualified and receiving less wages than other employees, even less qualified new hires. The discrimination can be so pervasive that African Americans feel uneasy and threatened, demotivated and disrespected, eventually feeling forced to leave to search for other employment.

The targets of the harassment are people who are usually perceived as “weaker” or “inferior” by the person who is harassing them. Prior to having the class of Professional Values and Ethics, I assumed I understood the basic concepts of what defines a professional who has competence of values and ethics. Nevertheless, by being enrolled in this course, I have gained great knowledge of which professional values and ethical principles must be held by a social worker, which I did not know before. Progressively in this class, by learning professional values and ethics, my motivation to succeed as an upcoming social worker has gotten stronger.
