Remembering My Great-Grandmother What does phenomenal mean to you? One dictionary states phenomenal means very remarkable. My great grandmother was a very sophisticated and remarkable woman. Phenomenal should have been her first name, because that she was. My great grandmother was a rare breed; many do not come like that anymore. Memories of my great grandmother take me to a happy place, and hold a special place in my heart. On December 15, 1924 in an overcrowed room full of chaos an angel was born. Screaming from the top of her lungs, you knew she was alive. A little special and unique lady name Annie Mae Rankins; someone very different in society. She was determined to give her family a great life even though it was hard at times. Cooking, cleaning, baby sitting, paying bills, and staying active in church took up most of her time. Not one time did my great grandmother complain; instead, she embraced life and took it day by day. The act of kindness comes by very seldom. “Being kind and generous to people will take you very far in life” is what my great grandmother always told me. Smiling from ear to ear, eyes gazing across the room and that special touch are all it took for her to make someone day. Many days were made if you were surrounded by her and saw that big, bright, and beautiful smile. Soft hands are what she had from giving her entire life. No one went without, you could be a total stranger but she would give you her last. Loving each other is what our family believed in. We only had one back bone within our family and it was Mrs. Annie Mae. She kept us together during the hardest times. Each holiday, the holiday spirit flooded the house with pure happiness and joy. The sound of various categories of music was interesting, and made everyone so happy. Our taste buds ‘jumped off the walls’ because of all the delicious foods and deserts she hand prepared.
