My experience with goal making has always been a rough affair. The goals were not a source of motivation or inspiration for me. Instead the goals were a one-time action and were never to be found again once written down. It is not that I did not want to succeed in my goals or get the satisfaction of completing my goals, it is simply that my goals did not fit my specific needs and were not easy to follow. It is only now that I realize my goals were far from specific and measurable, realistic and challenging, and within a timeframe. Within this framework for goals my goals can become more inspirational to me and become a part of my life rather than a passing event in my life. My first academic goal is to get an ‘A’ in Bio 110 by the end of the semester. My goal is an enabling goal since it helps me achieve my larger goal of becoming physically fit a passing the Air Force ROTC fitness assessment. In order to accomplish this goal, I will fill up my bottle that holds 1 gallon of water every morning before class. I will also set a timer for 30 minutes so that I can drink water every 30 minutes. If I forget to drink water one day, I will Double the amount of water I drink the next day and have multiple bottles of water in accessible places for me to drink from. When I achieve this goal I will be proud and have confidence in myself. My family will also be proud of me and continue to motivate me. I will be able to run longer without becoming dehydrated and I will be closer to becoming physically fit. I will also lose any water weight I retain and slowly train my body to use water more efficiently.
