There are three characteristics commonly found in Mastery Students. Setting goals brings responsibility, a sense of accomplishment, and relaxation. When done accurately, goals can bring many benefits.
There are many benefits to making goals. Before you make a goal, it is essential to realize why it is important that you are doing this. First, when forming goals, make yourself aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Knowing your strengths is empowering, however, the feeling may not be the same when facing weaknesses. Many people view weaknesses as a bad thing, but it just shows where more work and focus is needed. It is imperative that both are recognized. If they are not recognized, the plan made to achieve the goal will not be as effective because you will spend the same amount of time on the strengths and weaknesses. If you acknowledge both, less time will be needed on the strengths, and more time can be spent on the weaker areas. Making goals also gives you something to work for and a guide along with it. This guide will help form a path to achieve the goal. This will not only help with goal making, but it will be very beneficial with other things in life because it also brings responsibility. ... most people do have plenty of time, they just don’t realize it. Another reason for not setting goals is the fear of losing or disappointment. Nobody likes the feeling of not succeeding, but there is always something a win in trying. These are just a few reasons why people do not set goals.
Although there are a million reasons I could use to not set goals, there are a million and one reasons why I should. I have found goal setting to be very beneficial. Many times I find myself making goals without even meaning to. Using a planner has made it effortless to set and achieve my goals. I use the SMART goal format, and I focus on the measurability of my goal. I set times and dates in my planner, and I have been very successful with achieving my goals. Goal setting is a very valuable component of being a Mastery Student. Goals provide expectations, and you are the judge.
Setting goals for yourself creates an individual growth. In the article, “Why we are looking at the ‘value’ of college all wrong” by Valerie Strauss, Nelson discusses how an independent learner is able to teach themselves and learn from the challenges they tend to face. “The educated graduate is an independent learner…able to direct his or her own learning in accordance with the challenges that life presents in the circumstances of his or her own life.(Strauss 1)” For example, I want to become Registered Nurse; therefore, I write that down as one of my goals. However, I would then have to write everything else in order to become a Registered Nurse. Having a goal set that I want to become a RN, I now have something to strive at and to motivate myself to reach that goal. Therefore, creating goals helps establish what direction I am trying to go in, and also allows me to figure out how to solve a problem. Another example is if I failed a test, I will try to examine the errors within my work; however, I will then create a goal for myself to make sure I do better on test the next time. Finding the errors and creating goals to fix the errors makes me an independent learner. I am taking the charge that I want to do better; therefore, I am going to create a goal to help me succeed. By fixing the errors, I then challenge myself inside and outside the
You should also have a willingness to expand your efforts and reach your goals. Understand how hard you are willing to work to achieve your goals. Then analyze if you generally pick easy goals that can be quickly reached or those that require hard work and some time to achieve. This will help you determine the quality of your goals.
There is really nothing wrong with setting goals. In fact to have a goal drives people to work harder. Setting destinations only becomes an issue when an individual becomes too absorbed in his own bubble. When the mentality becomes insensitive of others, of the good, and ordered soul, true happiness becomes difficult. It is important to remember that true happiness is found not in the end of the marathon but in running the marathon. The destination is just either a yes or no, win or lose, success or fail but the journey towards the destination tells a story. It is our journey toward the end that builds our character, teaches us about life, shapes our lives and reflects our

Goal setting is key in motivation; goals need to be clear, sharp, and realistic. There are academic, professional, and personal goals I desire to reach, I feel it is always important to set goals, because without them, you have no future to work towards.
Radar (2005) said that if students write goals down, then they are able to examine themselves and see what they want to accomplish. In order to be successful in achieving goals, the students must have a good understanding of what it is that they need to accomplish. When setting goals, students need to know all the different types of goals such as long-term and short-term goals. Knowing these will help students to understand how to put what they are learning in perspective and whether it is a yearlong goal

Long-term goals offer long-term success. Three goals that I hope to achieve in my life are practicing orthodontics, mastering how to think before I speak, and raising my future children well.
The established three goals for my practicum were coordinated with my mentor Joan Green, Director of Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) to be accomplished during the 2017 spring semester along with feedback from Professor Chavez.
It is important to identify what my end goal is. Knowing what my end goal is for various aspects of my life helps me create goals that will lead me to my end goal. I think to myself what are some things that I can do daily to help guide me towards this goal. I think being organized can really help you identify what is important and not important.
When I create a goal I always write down whether the goal is actually SMART, if I find that the goal is not “SMART” than I add all of the attributes of a SMART goal to it. These goals benefit my life because it keeps me organized on what I exactly what to accomplish I life. So far, by using smart goals I have been able to track just how well I have been doing in school. Every time I complete a goal, I get excited to complete the next goal. My goals keep me on track for my success and they motivate me to move on to the next goal. It’s an unspoken sensation to feel like you accomplished

Things that you want to learn more about your goal. Qualities that you admire in others. Improves the qualities you have. Habits that you want to stop and habits that you want to improve.
