The path I have taken toward obtaining my Bachelor of Science Degree in Business, Management, and Economics, with a concentration in Marketing, has been different than I expected when I first started college. I started at Brooklyn College at 17-years-old and frankly, I wasn’t ready for it. I struggled to balance an awkward schedule of classes and inconsistent study habits. I never felt completely comfortable there and after two years of performing poorly, I enrolled at Kingsborough Community College. I viewed it as a new start and seized the opportunity. I decided to major in Business Administration; I made the Dean’s List, and saw my grades improve dramatically. After completing 74 total credits, I decided I was ready to return to a four-year-college. I initially considered returning to Brooklyn College but at this time my grandmother had become ill. I applied to the College of Staten Island which was near her home and would make it possible for me to help her out with whatever she needed and attend school locally. This worked out great for my first semester. I carried a 3.47 GPA and decided to major in Business, with a concentration in Marketing. At this time, I was working part-time while in school. But due to certain circumstances, I was forced to obtain a full-time job in addition to other part-time commitment. This made it very difficult for me to enroll in classes as most of the upper-level marketing classes that I needed for graduation were only offered during the day when I would now be working. I enrolled in night and weekend classes for the next two semesters but my grades began to suffer. Different cultures have different values that I am unfamiliar with. Learning the way to approach these situations will help me expand my understanding of marketing concepts and their application.
I feel that the courses I have selected will help me expand on the many marketing courses I have already completed. Receiving my Bachelor of Science Degree in Business, Management, and Economics, with a concentration in Marketing from Empire State College is something I take great pride in. Along with this degree and gaining the knowledge from these courses I am confident I will be able to further my career in the marketing field. I hope that the courses I have selected fulfill the standards that the college has come to expect.
While my senior year of my High School was coming to an end, I began to realize how expensive higher education would be for my family. Due to the financial situation at home, I figured that it would be best for me to go to a county college. I moved into my uncle’s home in Elizabeth, New Jersey to attend Union County College, since Essex County College did not seem right for me. I made this bold decision for one reason and one reason only; to receive the best type of education for the lowest possible price (which seemed almost impossible). I decided to take the test, and I scored the second highest in my group. I wanted to go to college, but I felt I had been out of school too long and needed to ease into the process with a community college. I planned to major in psychology and minor in creative writing. I attended New River Community and Technical College for two years. I had two immensely supportive professors during my time there Karen Carter-Harvey (Psychology) and Scott McClanahan (English). I enjoyed the experience, but I decided to move on to pursue my goals since New River did not offer a psychology degree. I transferred to Marshall University, but my experience is limited. Most my classes have been online. I am still working full time, and I am commuting two hours to campus. Freshmen year of college had finally arrived, and I was ready to experience life through the lens of an adult. Just turning eighteen, I had it all figured out, my school of choice, my major, and my career. My plan was to graduate with a major in business administration and a double minor in psychology and political science, with hopes of becoming an attorney. It never ceases to amaze me how each semester of college has taught me to expand my realm of knowledge and to become more open to new experiences. After my very first semester, I decided to double major in business administration and psychology. As time went on, my sophomore year allowed me to delve into many major courses, which probed a thirst for knowledge that needed to be quenched. At this point, I wanted to receive a more thorough understanding of both academic disciplines, but it was not until my junior year that I realized my true purpose.
For the past seven years, I have had the same dream - to someday be a high school math teacher. I am finally on my way to turning that dream into a reality. Along the way, I am learning a lot of things and forming a number of opinions. One of the main areas in which I am forming new beliefs is in relation to what methods I will use in teaching my class and what aspects of what philosophies I will employ. First of all, however, I must reach the point where I have a class to teach.

I have this quote printed out and on the wall next to my door so I can see it every day as a reminder to myself. I believe that we all have a purpose on this earth and that everything we go through on the journey there has a reason whether to teach a lesson or set an example. In my household, from the time I was in Kindergarten, my mother expected academic excellence and nothing less. With her help I was an A student, Science fair grand champion, Young authors winner, Community helpers member, Young academic role model and more. At the age of eleven I lost my mother to Invasive Breast Cancer. Being academically successful was her goal for me and up to that point in her life she instilled the values of education and hard work ethic into me. At that young age I had to decide how I was going to continue being academically successful in school and what were my educational goals for myself. Since that day every school year I ask myself that same question,and this year being my senior year it’s more prominent than ever. My short term educational goals are: to apply and be admitted to 4 universities, maintain a 3.7 gpa, pass AP calc and English exam’s with a score of 4 or higher, and graduate with honors.
Educational Goals: Education is extremely important part of my past, present, and future goals. I currently hold an Associate of Applied Science in Graphic Design Media. I have found that an A.A.S Degree does not go as far al I originally intended in the Rochester, MN area and furthering my education will be a necessity for my future career goals. Over the past 2 years I have been working on my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the Minnesota School of Business Rochester campus. I am currently a senior with 3 quarters left before a spring graduation. After a June graduation, I plan on taking a summer quarter break. After summer break I will either continue on at MSB for my Masters in Business Administration with a Minor in Marketing or transferring the University of Minnesota for my Masters in Adult Education. After my Masters Degree is complete I will decide at that time if I wish to continue on and achieve my Ph.D.

My overall GPA in my undergraduate degree does not provide an accurate representation of my capability as a law school student. I started at San Francisco State University as a civil engineering major. I struggled with my engineering courses, which is demonstrated on my transcript in the fall of 2013. I did not change my major to find something that would be less challenging; I changed it to something that I was more interested in. Business administration (decision sciences) is a rigorous undergraduate program, but this program was more aligned with my interests and abilities. Education has always been a primary concern for my parents, who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. My Mother and Father own their own company, and they are constantly talking about business, which has inspired me to follow their path. When my parents retire, they want me to carry on their legacy. At the start of this module, I had no idea what to expect. When I heard the term “Marketing”, only one thing came to my mind: presentations. When I used to be in school, I remembered vaguely that my presentation skills weren’t exactly even close to Suze Orman, who is considered to be America’s most motivational speaker. In fact, they were so bad, I wasn’t sure of doing this course in the beginning. But then it wasn’t like I had a choice. I had opted for BA Hons. Business Management and the course came along with a module named Marketing.

It is through research, innovation, and teaching that we improve our society. Education of the whole person was one of the earliest goals of higher education. Today there are many competing goals that influence the missions and funding philosophies tied to public universities. In chapter one of How to succeed in school without really learning: the credentials race in American education, David Labaree (1997) identifies three defining goals of education. In order to provide context to how the three goals can be in competition or alignment, two pieces will be used to analyze the goals. The first is an article regarding the role of the government in financing higher education (Baum, 1995) and the second document, The Arizona higher education enterprise: Strategic realignment 2010 forward, is the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) strategic plan (ABOR, 2010).
