The decision to become a counselor for me was gradually over time based on my life experiences, personality, and passions. My journey to contemplating counseling as a career began with some life experiences in my childhood. I was bullied as a child in elementary school and by middle school; I craved desperately to be liked by my peers. I recall in middle school knowing that a girl in my grade was being picked on by my peers and I chose not to talk to her because I did not want to be associated with her. I went to school one day and everyone was crying. I found out she had committed suicide because of the bullying. I sat back and chose not to talk with her because she was not cool enough. I have a high level of patience which I have discovered while working with adolescences with behavioral and mental health issues. Many of my co-workers and students have commented on my ability to be patient in frustrating situations. I have learned active listening skills over time due to showing others I am listening to their stories and asking questions to dig deeper into subjects and conversation. People tend to talk with me about deeper issues due to my ability to use active listening skills and authenticity. Through using active listening skill, I am able to convey compassion, nonjudgmental, empathy and encouragement to those I am talking with. When difficult situations or topics are brought up in conversations, I am able to convey compassion and empathy to those I am speaking with. I consider myself to be an encouraging person who tries to encourage my students to keep growing and moving forward in their treatment with positive statements about their attitudes and
