Imagine a wasteland, crater-ridden with rocket-filled skies, living under the constant threat that the ones you love most may be the next victims. Now imagine being subjected to the will of another person, completely at the mercy of his whims, basic freedoms and expression denied. Perseverance means to carry on regardless of obstacles, no matter how fearful the person may be. Mariam had been living fearlessly for years of marriage but did not try to escape her situation. She displayed an indomitable will by simply enduring the onslaught put upon her by Rasheed. Many years later, Mariam’s will to persevere does not falter, as she wears a “face of grievances unspoken, burdens gone unprotested, a destiny submitted to and endured” (Hosseini 249). In Mariam’s marriage, she underwent a constant torrent of insult, deprivation, and even physical abuse. Despite this, she complains not and soldiers on. Her strong silence is the representation of perseverance, quietly enduring through hardship. The relationship with Rasheed illustrates Mariam’s grit, the strength that she draws on to survive her circumstances. In the perpetual tempest of Mariam’s life, she faces the storms with profound strength. Laila provides the courage to fight the storms, Aziza grants her the hope that the sun will shine once more, and her own perseverance allows her to carry on as the deluge continues to
In the story, A Long Walk to Waters, written by Linda Sue Park, the readers are introduced to many different individuals that were able to survive challenging environments. Those individuals used those factors, perseverance, cooperation, and independence. Those factors have allowed individuals to make it past through the harsh environments throughout their journey. Perseverance shows how those individuals kept on going without giving up. Meanwhile, cooperation represents how struggling individuals are able to work together in order to achieve their goal. Last but not least independence shows how individuals can conquer a hurdle by him or herself.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is a story of two Afghan women, from seemingly different backgrounds, whose paths cross and lives are changed by each other. Although it may seem like this story is one of resilience and optimism, A Thousand Splendid Suns is clearly a story that represents pain and hopelessness.
The Scarlet Letter, and Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, the difficulties and trials that we all must face can transform the mundane liquid mixture of existence into a vibrant and fulfilling gumbo. The protagonists of these works are two strong-willed and highly admirable women, who prevail in the face of overwhelming odds stacked in everyone’s favor but theirs. In their trying periods of isolation brought about by cold and unwelcoming peers, particularly men, they give their lives meaning by simply pushing forward, and living to tell the tale. Beginning with the very first words of The Scarlet Letter, the reader is thrust into a bleak and unforgiving setting.
The sentiment from Laila’s childhood, that people should not have more children if they have already given all of their love to their other children, informs her reaction to becoming pregnant with Rasheed’s child because she was worried that she would repeat history by not loving Rasheed’s child as much as she loved Tariq’s. Laila did not feel that her mother loved her as much as she loved her brothers. She felt as if her mother had no love to give her because she had already given it all away to her two sons. When Laila became aware that she was pregnant with Rasheed’s child, she contemplated killing it inside the womb because she did not believe that she could love
It has often been said that what we value is determined only by what we sacrifice. The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, includes one specific character who makes a sacrifice that demonstrates what she truly values in life. Mariam, a major character in the book, sacrifices her life in order to save Laila and her children. This sacrifice allows the reader to view what Mariam truly cares about: the survival of Laila, her happiness, and her children. Mariam’s sacrifice highlights her willingness to do whatever it takes to save the ones she loves, allowing for a deeper understanding of Mariam and how sacrifice is a major theme in the novel.
What are some of the themes in the life of average people? Is it heritage, love for family, persevering through all life’s struggles, loyalty to oneself or other people. It could possibly be all of those; maybe even none of them. In S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders many of the characters live hard lives that contain complex themes. Three of the most important themes in S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders are loyalty to oneself or other people, love for family and friends, and perseverance through all of life’s struggles.
People endure every single day. Whether physical endurance, or mental endurance, everyone endures. My personal story of endurance is similar Mariam. I was sent to a summer long camp. Much like Mariam, everyday was a struggle in itself. The queasy, sick feeling of missing name, and not knowing what day will bring. When most people are faced with emotional, or physical endurance, they give up. But in the novel A thousand Splendid suns, by Khaled Hosseini, is a story about when you don’t give up. The novel is about a women named Mariam, borna a harabi, who is forced to marry a man she had never previously known. Mariam and Laila use patience, hope, and a strong mental will to endure everyday life.
Everyone in their life experiences a tragic event that brings them pain and hopelessness. After the event occurs, we never realize what caused it. In A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, we see that one little decision Mariam makes causes a large turning point for the whole book. Everyday people make many decisions, some have little impact on them, like what outfit to wear on a certain day. Other decisions, which are made without thought, can have a large impact.
Sometimes, life becomes harder and people need to deal with that. To get through the hardships, many people choose to endure. In the book of Khaled Hosseini,
“The good guy always wins” is a phrase we often hear growing up. Parents reassure their kids that the hero will win despite the trials he encounters. Joseph Campbell, who coined the term “monomyth”, identifies these trials as a part of a pattern in the hero’s journey. This pattern consists of separation, initiation, and return. Osmosis Jones goes through this pattern with only a few pieces missing. The hero in this story teaches others that giving up is not an option. One must have perseverance to complete a goal, in this case, to save Frank. The journey that Jones takes to help him get through the monomyth helps develop the theme of perseverance because he never gives up on what he wants.
In stories about epic heroes, there are many components that go into telling the story. One of the most important components however is theme. With theme, the author of the story can manipulate events around that theme to tell the story. The themes of Perseverance and loyalty show up quite a bit in epic poems. In The Odyssey, our hero Odysseus shows the themes of perseverance and loyalty as well as any epic hero. The journey of Odysseus return home shows extreme perseverance. Despite encountering a cyclops, the sirens and even dealing with Poseidon himself, his resolve to get back home to his wife Penelope is quite impressive (Books 9-12). Odysseus shows how much he wants to get home and stay
My perseverance has prepared me for a career in medicine. The path towards becoming a physician can be long and challenging, necessitating the ability to endure. My ability to bounce back from setbacks and mistakes has solidified throughout my journey. One of the cornerstone experiences of my personal development occurred during high school. My determination led to me my graduating as valedictorian of my class, while balancing three varsity sports and several extracurricular activities. In addition, I worked on weekends to help support my family financially. This persistence resulted in scholarship awards that made higher education a possibility.
Since April 13th Verizon Wireless has been at strike. Verizon wants to remove on call centers and replace workers with people from different countries. Instead they will receive two hundred dollars a week from the union for picketing
In Khaled Hosseini’s novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” the characters Laila, Mariam, and Rasheed lived through a complex journey of forgiveness and penance that deeply impacted their lives. Despite the hard times these characters went through, they navigated through their relationships together. Through their interconnected stories, Hosseini explores the transformative nature of forgiveness and the healing that can come from acknowledging one’s mistakes and seeing redemption. Rasheed, a cruel and cold-hearted person, took Laila in after her parents had passed away in an accident. Rasheed’s twisted understanding of forgiveness and penance is shown through his abusive character.
