Sometimes, life becomes harder and people need to deal with that. To get through the hardships, many people choose to endure. In the book of Khaled Hosseini,
A thousand splendid suns, he tells us how his characters endure all the pains in life. Like most of the women in Afghanistan, Mariam and Laila has to endure their lives. Mariam and Laila, from two people didn’t know each other, but now, they become friends. Together, they endure and change their lives forever. They also teach us a lesson: endurance requires love, hope and sometimes sacrifice.
Endurance requires true love. When Rasheed marries Laila, Mariam feels unsafe in the house. Mariam can’t get off the idea that Laila is the one who steals her husband. Mariam says to Laila: “ I …show more content…

Mariam is the one who must endure for her whole life. She is a Harami, she “killed” her mother, and now, by killing Rasheed, she also takes Zalmai’s farther away. She may choose to suicide like Nana, her mother did. Mariam talk to Laila: “I’ve killed our husband. I’ve deprived your son of his father… How do I ever bring myself to look at him. Laila jo?” (Hosseini 358). After all, Mariam has to endure that much, how can she continue to endure the rest of her life? But, in another hand, Mariam knows she has her own value, she is the one who full of love and also being loved, so she would do something better than suicide. Mariam say: “ For me, it ends here. There’s nothing more I want… You and your children have made me so very happy” (Hosseini 358). With Mariam, there is no regret if she leaves this world. Mariam sacrifices herself to bring more loves, hopes to Laila and the children in order to endure.
There are three qualities that must have in order to endure hardship: love, hope and sacrifice. In A thousand splendid suns, everything happening bring more pains, and the characters must endure more. Mariam and Laila, they would not endure that much without the other.
