The true heroism of Mariam is evident in the novel, A thousand Splendid Suns,compared to Laila, by the hardships she experiences with her family in her early childhood. As a child Mariam experiences abandonment from her father when she needs him the most causing her a loss of innocence. Mariam goes to visit her father Jalil, to prove to her mother and herself that he loves her; however, when she arrives her father forces her to sleep on the road causing, “Tears of grief, of anger, of disillusionment. But mainly tears of deep, deep shame of how she had foolishly given herself over to Jalil” (page, ). Mariams constant denial of her mother's opinion about Jalil proves her loyalty towards him and she willingly leaves her mother to go visit him.
However, he chooses to abandon her by pretending that he’s not at home when Mariam arrives, she tolerates the hunger, thirst and embarrassment for him. Regardless of the constant pain Mariam endures through all of this, she never gives up on Jalil. She returns back to him, after the catastrophic death of her mother.This relates to other fictional superheroes, as they always have rough family life and die at the end such as Steve Roger in Captain America. In contrast to Laila, who has had a good and a stable childhood. Throughout her entire childhood, Laila experiences constant love and support from her family and friends and Tariq. As Laila’s friends are talking about marriage, Laila deep down knows that Babi would never give her up for marriage at a young age, as he knows the importance of education, “But Laila didn’t tell Hasina that Babi had said these things or how lucky she was to have a father like him” (page, 114). Laila realises how lucky she was to have a father like Babi, who cares for her, loves her, constantly empowers her to be a strong women through education, in a male dominant society, as her friends are talking about their marriage at a very tender age. Whereas, Mariam never experiences love or the joy of having a parent who cares for her, which in conclusion makes her the true heroine of the novel.
In the novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, Mariam fulfills the hero journey. She goes through many tests and hardships to accomplish the journey throughout her life. The obstacles she overcomes helps her to grow and become a much stronger person. Mariam undergoes a hero’s journey in A Thousand Splendid Suns because she is born and raised in a rural setting away from cities, the hero meets monsters or monstrous men, and suffers an unhealable wound, sometimes an emotional or spiritual wound from which the hero never completely recovers.
For her 15th birthday, Mariam asked Jalil if he could take her to his cinema to watch Pinocchio. She also asked if Jalil could bring her brothers and sisters so she could meet them. Both Nana and Jalil thought it wasn’t a good idea, but Mariam insisted on going, so Jalil said he would send someone to pick her up. Mariam did not like this idea and said that she wanted to be picked up by Jalil. Jalil reluctantly agreed. Later that day, Mariam gets the backlash and hate from her mother from her decision: “Of all the daughters I could have had, why did God give me an ungrateful one like you? …How dare you abandon me like this, you treacherous little harami!” Mariam wakes up the next day, disappointed and fed up since Jalil did not come to pick her up. She heads out to town to find Jalil herself. She makes it to his house when a chauffeur tells Mariam that Jalil was “away on urgent business.” She slept outside of his house and was awoken by the chauffeur, telling her that he would take her home. Mariam snatches away from the chauffeur’s grip and turns around towards the house, to see Jalil in an upstairs window. It was then that Mariam figured out that all she was to Jalil was a disgrace. Jalil had always been careful with the information he told Mariam. He may have loved her, but only on his own terms. It is related to the Reaction and Neoliberalism chapters of Chasteen’s Born In Blood and Fire where great power comes from increased wealth. Maria is the main character who flies to New York with illegal drugs, serving as an example of the danger and risk that people are willing to take to make money to make a living through the drug trafficking ring.
In the article “The Myth of a Latina Women: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria”, Judith Ortiz Cofer uses her background as a Puerto Rican to highlight the disrespect that Latina woman face in a society that does not understand their value. Overall, Cofer argues that the derogatory views placed in the Hispanic culture has led to the creation of various stereotypes that cause Latina women to have a lack of opportunities, to be mistakenly categorized, and be devalued. Cofer proves her point through various life experiences in which she has been stereotyped, as well as through her personal background.
From start to finish, one could see how much Mariam values Laila, Aziza, and their friendship. The first example is when Mariam vows to help Laila while they are in the hospital for Laila’s unborn child: “I’ll get you seen, Laila jo. I promise” (287). This simple promise is a deep portrayal of Mariam’s desire to help Laila find a doctor and deliver her baby. Additionally, one can see Mariam’s love for Laila when she protects her from Rasheed’s grip of death, “‘Rasheed.’ He looked up. Mariam swung. She hit him across the temple. The blow knocked him off Laila” (348). Rasheed was going to kill Laila, but Mariam steps in and knocks him off of her with a shovel to save her life. Mariam forms a tight-knit bond with Laila, and when Hosseini includes their relationship, one can see how Mariam values Laila enough to kill another man. The author also describes their relationship after Mariam and Laila discuss plans for leaving: “When they do, they’ll find you as guilty as me. Tariq too. I won’t have the two of you living on the run like fugitives.” … “Laila crawled to her and again put her head on Mariam’s lap. She remembered all the afternoons they’d spent together, braiding each other’s hair, Mariam listening patiently to her random thoughts and ordinary stories with an air of gratitude, with the expression of a person to whom a unique and coveted privilege had been extended” (358). Another act of perseverance in this novel, is when Laila had to give her daughter to an orphanage. When Rasheed’s store caught fire, the financial state of the family got worse and worse. They had to sell almost everything they had and skip meals to survive, the kids got weaker and weaker. Due to Rasheed’s ill temper, he got fired from every job. Therefore, Laila is obligated to take to Aziza to an orphanage where she can be fed well. Laila tries to calm Aziza on their way to the orphanage, claiming, “I’ll come and see you.”(315) Laila had to distance herself from her only daughter. The characters of Nana and Mariam show the archetype of a mother by sacrificing to make their children’s life better. Towards the beginning of the book Nana describes Mariam’s birth to Mariam and mentions, “ I cut the chord between us myself. That’s why I had a knife.”(11). As Nana mentioned she sacrificed throughout her pregnancy though the pain and separated the umbilical chord herself because she wanted her child to have the best chance that she could. She also mentions the knife, which could have been use to kill the baby, similar to what Laila almost did with the rusty bicycle spoke. "You stop that. These thoughts are no good, Mariam jo. You hear me, child? No good. They will destroy you. It wasn't your fault. It wasn't your fault no". Mariam nodded, but as desperately as she wanted to she could not bring herself to believe him"(44). She is forced into marriage to a man she does not love. "I don't want to," Mariam said. She looked at Jalil. "I don't want this. Don't make me"(47). She is sent to live in a strange city were she does not know anyone. She has a physically abusive husband. "Then he was gone, leaving Mariam to spit out pebbles, blood, and the fragments of two broken molars"(104). Her husband is cruel and says hurtful words to her. She can not do anything right in his eyes. When he is not ignoring her he is being verbally or physically abusive towards her.

These lines from Mary Wollstonecraft’s (1759-1797) unfinished novella Maria, or the Wrongs of Woman substantiates the private operation of the madhouse where the protagonist Maria is confined. The importance of private ownership is that this places the madhouse outside the discourse of law. It is illegitimate yet it is legitimized as it is a symbol of male-dominated state oppression. Parallel to this Bastille becomes the direct symbol of the same repression which is used by Wollstonecraft to depict the predicament of dissenting revolutionary women in the late Eighteenth- century England. The language which she is using is evidently from the French Revolution as we know the symbolic importance of the dreaded tower of Bastille where political ‘criminals’ were imprisoned. So, Wollstonecraft’s objective is to politicize the genre of novel as the other Jacobin women writers- novel, for them, is a vehicle of political propaganda.
