Privilege causes discrimination. White privilege, socio-economic privilege, and male privilege are common phrases used amongst Americans. It shows the advantages and disadvantages a person has. Despite common belief, everyone has some form or privilege even if it is not obvious. Privilege is commonly associated with opportunities or advantages nevertheless, it has many definitions that may change the circumstance or connotation of the word. Privilege can be both positive and negative in society, depending on how the beholder uses it. Additionally, many people question the attitude and personality of those deemed as privileged. It is important to ask if privilege is a bad thing, if it causes someone to become a bad person and how it really causes discrimination. Common knowledge demonstrates that privilege is an advantage someone has over a person or a group of people, yet privilege has various definitions that may alter the perception of the word. The negative aspect associated with privilege comes from the belief that privileged is not earned. This notion ignores the aspect of privilege that demonstrates how privilege is earned. It is not new that with certain jobs and responsibilities come certain rewards and benefits. These rewards and benefits can also be classified as privileges. It can be defined as a right or immunity granted as a benefit, advantage, or favor. A type of privilege that would fall under this specific definition would be an executive for a company or a lead editor for a news paper. These high positions of leadership and chiefdom come with privileges because the people in these positions worked hard for them.
