“Live, For Now” Pepsi’s famous, inspiring slogan for 2013. Pepsi has evolved over time after it began in 1902, the slogan, logo, and celebrities involved in the commercials have changed throughout the start of the business and helped shape the business to be where it is to this day.
Pepsi all started when Caleb Bradham started experimenting with spices and syrups to give his customers a new kind of drink. He first named his drink “Brad’s Drink,” but later decided to call it “Pepsi-Cola.” In 1902 he launched the business and applied to the U.S. Patent Office to receive a trademark. A very clever decision was made later to bottle Pepsi-Cola so that more people could enjoy his beverage. In 1910, Pepsi-Cola had twenty-four businesses in the America. Pepsi was becoming popular so fast, New Bern featured Pepsi-Cola on a postcard. The company was the first in the United States to change from horse transport to vehicle transport, which would make the delivering Pepsi much faster. In 1913, Greensboro Patriot gave Bradham much praise making more people interested in Pepsi. Famous race car driver Barney Oldfield, gave praise to the drink in newspaper ads. A slogan was then born “Drink Pepsi-Cola. It Will Satisfy You”.
World War I changed the businesses dramatically, most of the businesses were having difficulties at this time. Pepsi-Cola went bankrupt in 1923 because sugar prices were constantly changing and they could not handle the inflation of the prices. The history of Coca Cola began in 1886 and it was founded by Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton the curiosity led him to create a distinctive tasting soft drink that could be sold at soda fountains. The first servings of Coca – Cola were sold for 5 cents for a glass. During the first year, sales were a meek nine portions per day in Atlanta. Today, daily servings of Coca Cola beverages are estimated at 1.9 billion globally. In 1886 he sold to Atlanta businessman, Asa G. Candler. Under the leadership of Mr. Candler’s the distribution of Coca – Cola expanded to soda fountains. In 1894, overwhelmed by the growing demand for Coca Cola and the desire to make the drink movable, Joseph Biedenharn fixed bottling machinery in the rear of his Mississippi beverage fountain, becoming the first to place Coca Cola in bottles. Considered an innovative tactic back in 1887, it was followed by newspaper publicity and the distribution of promotional items bearing the Coca Cola script to participating pharmacies. One of the most famous advertising slogans in Coca Cola history “The Pause That Refreshes” first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1929. In 2009, the “Open Happiness” campaign was unveiled globally. The central message of “Open Happiness” is an invitation to billions around the world to recess, revive with a Coca Cola, and continue to enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures.
Coke continuously out-stands Pepsi, even though they share a very similar taste and colour, however Coke should not be the drink that receives all the love and attention for what it offers. Despite their similar soda colour, the drinks actually contain some different ingredients, which produce a different taste, and affect the body differently. Furthermore, the way the companies markets their drinks makes a huge contribution to how successful their products will become. The major element for success however stems from their impact on society and how the companies utilize their social power to evolve. The two major soda companies are constantly head to head with one another, yet it is what they do that sets them apart.
PepsiCo with almost a 3-minute commercial using Kendall Jenner as the silent communication source, using visual language with all ethnic and race being included using career choices such as a cellist, a photographer and dancer; a song written and sung by Skip Marley “Lions”; not to mention the men in blue was expected to be a hit advertisement by showing it was time to bring the world together as one. To be able to bring peace and understanding to every individual or let it be shown that all people count, not just one ethnic group or race. This advertisement was used to try to defuse the conflict of street protest and the violence that often comes with it, particularly the black lives matter movement. Showing the men in blue there to protect and serve; yet will do whatever it takes to control the ongoing issue at hand. The way Jenner being shown ditching a high fashion photo shoot ripping off her blonde wig, to join a protest and prance around with every nationality with a Pepsi in hand smiling as saying this is what will make the world a better place. To reach these goals their vision is to “deliver top-tier financial performance” long term by establishing sustainability and providing a confident stamp on the world and the environment (What We Believe). PepsiCo calls this dream “Performance with Purpose”. For them, providing products from indulgent to nourishing purposes comes from how the products are made. To make these products also environmentally kind, many initiatives are used to find ways to conserve the world’s natural resources along with taking responsibility for their operations effect on the environment. At PepsiCo, there is believed to be a link between how the company performs and the sustainability of the Earth. With the performance over purpose strategy, the company has been able to save close to $1 billion dollars by developing new agricultural technologies as well as locating new areas to market products. The main goal for the next ten years for PepsiCo will be to focus on healthier foods and drinks, creating growth for food and retail partners, reducing their environmental impressions, creating a healthy workplace and culture, as well as endorsing healthier societies where the company operates. Pepsi Company (PepsiCo) owns many brands of beverages, snacks and other foods. Its major product, Pepsi Cola, is one of the most popular carbonated beverages. Besides that, PepsiCo owns the brands Quaker Oats, Gatorade, Frito-Lay, Tropicana, Mountain Dew, Naked, Mirinda and SoBe. In order to maintain, or preferable expand, its market share, PepsiCo constantly introduced new products under its brands. This is a marketing strategy known as Product Development. By modifying the formulas and ingredients, PepsiCo had invented and marketed more than 50 types of carbonated beverages under the brand of Pepsi. To name a few, Pepsi Free introduced in 1982, Pepsi AM introduced in 1989, Pepsi Tropical introduced in 1994, Pepsi Blue introduced in 2003, Pepsi Edge introduce in 2004, Pepsi Lime introduced in 2005, and Pepsi Ice introduced in 2007. Coca - Cola : Claims, Values and Polices Coca-Cola is a well-known and cherished brand name. When people think of this name, memories tend to overflow in their heads. Why do you need to be a member? Because, not only does Coke taste great and refresh your own personal memories, it also fills you with memories of the Coca-Cola like "Always Coca-Cola", the antics of the Coke polar bears, and all of the different ads that have represented Coke over the years. Just about every ad you see, as a consumer, has tons of hidden meanings.
The Coca-Cola company was founded in 1886 by John Pemberton, a Civil War veteran and Atlanta pharmacist. He was inspired by his curiosity as he stirred up a fragrant, caramel-colored liquid that he brought down to a place called Jacobs’ Pharmacy. There he added carbonated water and let several customers sample the new concoction. Jacobs’ Pharmacy put it on sale for five cents a glass and named it Coca-Cola. This “inspired curiosity” has now grown to be the world’s leading manufacturer, marketer, and distributor of nonalcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups. In 1906 Coca-Cola opened bottling plants in Canada, Cuba, and Panama. Today they produce nearly 400 brands in over 200 countries. More than 70% of their income comes from outside the U.S. (1).
