Peer mentor program A peer mentor is a program collaborative with the FYE (first year seminar) to provide help for the first year student. To help student overcome the challenge transition to college life, Sacramento state offer a program that would help them adjust to the new start. This program launched during 2002-2003 and the program has grown from group of 5 to 39 peer mentor to serve and help first year students. Every student who has enrolled in first year seminar classes will have an assigned peer mentor to help them with academic advising and provide one on one meeting with students to get them to know what kind of resource, program, and club sac state offers to them, and any kind of help the student wants. Peer mentors are there to offer helps to the student who need it, even the simplest question like how to use the print smart website and to make them feel more comfortable to ask questions or if the student needs help they would go to them without making a second thought because they already been in their shoes and are willing to help them. Building this kind of relationships help to establish positive first year experiences, improve morale, and foster a stronger connection to, and engagement with the campus community. Every week the peer mentor are required to go to one or both class session to talk about the upcoming event that is happening this week or any kind of opportunity that would be helpful for the student, in every event the student would find one or two of the peer mentor with the sign in sheet and if the student signed in they get extra points for the First year seminar class, even if the student went to the meeting area they would make them sign in and that also would count as extra point for the seminar class. Mentors and mentees each benefit from successful relationships with one another due to the newfound success for the mentee and the the satisfaction reward for the mentor by seeing a person they guided make an achievement. Success from one of these relationships was found in a study conducted during 2015, where 1,139 students from 11 years and above in different school districts served as subjects. In the study, half of the adolescents received mentors while the other half would receive one following the study. After students with a mentor spent time with them, the students were provided with a survey in which students who reported their relationship with their mentor was “close” or “somewhat close” had widespread academic improvement. As a result of the experiment, it is evident that a significant number of students benefit from a mentor being by their side. If the mentee sensed an emotional connection with the mentor, that was all they needed to succeed in school, even though academic-related tasks may not have been on the agenda for the mentors and mentees during their time together

Tuesday at 10:00a.m., I interviewed with Dr. Ann Griffith about becoming my research mentor and working in her lab. As a potential mentor, Dr. Griffith seems to be prefect in compatibility. She has a great personality and seems to really understand my concerns and schedule. I may bond better with her because she is a woman and she understands a lot of the struggles women endure every day, especially working mothers. She has several publications, one for instance: “Metabolic Damage and Premature Thymus Aging Causes by Stromal Catalase Deficiency”. This paper really gives good insight into understanding the lab’s interest and where I may possible fit into the balance. In the course of our meeting, I was better able to assess Dr. Griffith as my potential mentor based on these aspects and other informative topics from our discussion that would personally affect me the most.

I have been a mentee in three mentoring programs and I understand from firsthand experience how important mentors have been in my life. Each relationship was very different; one of my mentors was about two generations older than me, while my two more recent mentors have been only a few years older than me.
The Things They Carried by Tim O' Brien is a colorful look into what the Vietnam War was like for the U.S. Soldiers. The story leaves out no detail when it comes to facts. It tells the cold and hard story of what happens to soldiers during war from a first-person perspective. The authors purpose in writing this is to inform readers about the Vietnam war and the realities of what it was like. The reason I chose this book was because I knew it was related to the Vietnam War.
Mentorship can be broken down into peer and professional associations. A peer mentoring study was done by Bulut et al. Promoting recovery through peer support provided a new perspective to work with mental health clients. I enjoyed seeing the reference on how the medical model focuses on the diagnoses which “disempowers and debilitates the client” (Loumpa, 2012). I agree with this analogy. A diagnosis does not have to define a person. Often times when people are diagnosed they allow those words to rule their life. Some even use them as an excuse to not perform on a daily basis.
