In addition, in Star Wars: A New Hope, Luke Skywalker’s mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, sacrifices his life to keep Luke safe from Darth Vader and other members of the Galactic Empire. He says to Vader, "You can't win. If you should strike me down, then I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. Also, he hollers to Luke, “Run Luke, run." When Obi-Wan sacrifices himself in order to keep Luke alive, he shows Luke his immense care and concern for him. By protecting Luke in such a profound manner, Obi-Wan clearly trusts Luke to discover his identity alone and succeed without him being alive Also, Obi-Wan knows that his wisdom from his many years of experience as a Jedi will help Luke from the sky, thus allowing his wisdom to eventually …show more content…
spread and rub off on Luke. As a result of his sacrifice and guidance offered to Luke later in the film, Luke learns to fully trust and utilize Obi-Wan’s wisdom (“Star Wars: A New Hope”). The mentors who continue to stand out possess the ability to make the mentee feel safe, while also attempting to force them out of their comfort zone and offer leadership opportunities as they continue to develop. By providing the mentee with a safe haven, the mentee has an environment where they can feel welcome and ready to grow. In the Karate Kid, when the young main character, Daniel, asks his mentor, Mr. Miyagi, if he will succeed at the karate tournament, Mr. Miyagi responds with advice for the tournament and for the rest of his life. He says to Daniel, “ ‘All life has a balance...understand? Go, go find the balance.’ ” By telling Daniel to find the balance, Mr. Miyagi hopes Daniel will realize that there is nothing holding him back from success. Mr. Miyagi explains to Daniel that nobody can tell him what he can and cannot achieve, so having faith in oneself is all that matters. Along with this, he desires for Daniel to attain a more positive lifelong mindset than before, and by being a trustworthy figure to him, Daniel feels comfortable and ready to grow and develop his karate skills and his character (“The Karate Kid”). Along with Mr. Miyagi, another mentor with a strong teaching system is Obi-Wan Kenobi. Throughout the film of Star Wars: A New Hope, Obi-Wan constantly reminds Luke that “the force will be with you, always”. As Luke and Obi-Wan are on the ship heading towards the Galactic Empire, Obi-Wan provides Luke with a significant lesson. When he hands Luke a lightsaber to fight against a drone during Jedi training on the ship, he reminds Luke to trust the force, signifying Luke needs to trust his instincts and have faith in the force. Due to Obi-Wan’s repetitious advice, Luke senses that the force is with him and defeats the drone, thus preparing him for conflict with the Galactic Empire later in the film. Through constantly explaining the essentiality of the force’s power, Luke eventually becomes prepared by the end of the film to step up and defeat the Galactic Empire on a mission. In order for this to have happened, it was necessary for Obi-Wan to gain Luke’s trust and sense of safety while around him and eventually push Luke outside of his comfort zone. By sacrificing himself to keep Luke alive, Luke receives more independence during the film and is ready near its conclusion to succeed, as a result of previous opportunities set forth by Obi-Wan to prepare (“Star Wars: A New Hope”). Once a mentor has made an impact on the mentee in a beneficial relationship, both benefit and changes are evident, especially improvements in the mentee’s behavior, more success in areas of one’s life, and other positive differences.
Mentors and mentees each benefit from successful relationships with one another due to the newfound success for the mentee and the the satisfaction reward for the mentor by seeing a person they guided make an achievement. Success from one of these relationships was found in a study conducted during 2015, where 1,139 students from 11 years and above in different school districts served as subjects. In the study, half of the adolescents received mentors while the other half would receive one following the study. After students with a mentor spent time with them, the students were provided with a survey in which students who reported their relationship with their mentor was “close” or “somewhat close” had widespread academic improvement. As a result of the experiment, it is evident that a significant number of students benefit from a mentor being by their side. If the mentee sensed an emotional connection with the mentor, that was all they needed to succeed in school, even though academic-related tasks may not have been on the agenda for the mentors and mentees during their time together
(Rhodes). In another study involving 1,000 children of varying ages from the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, more positive results were seen upon the child receiving a personal mentor. Boys and girls’ behavior was one of their aspects that improved greatly as a whole. Children who attained a mentor had an increased probability of better behavior with girls being 2.5 times and boys 2 times more likely to have self-confidence and enjoy school. In addition, girls were 4 times and boys were 2 times more likely to remain out of trouble without bullying, lying, fighting, and expressing anger. As a result of these dramatically improved behaviors by adolescents in the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, the mentors clearly filled a part of their lives. By obtaining a caring figure in their lives, these mentees felt less of a need to act out since they had someone who could guide them and care for them in a close relationship (“Youth Mentoring Linked to Many Positive Effects, New Study Shows.”). Lastly, according to Ruth Smith and Emmy Werner’s longitudinal study, people who initially struggled with some type of obstacle in their life had improved mindsets when they received a mentor. The researchers were able to find that these people who were transitioning from childhood into adulthood as an adolescent had a more positive outlook and believed they could regain control of their lives again. Mentors who were willing to develop a longer lasting relationship also contributed substantially to these improved mindsets of mentees who want to recover from a negative past experience. By having a mentors to aid these mentees, evidently the mentees found it a whole lot easier to recover and grow as a person by having someone there along the way to support them. With someone to push them forward, the mentees were more ready than ever before to have faith in the process of turning their life down a positive path (Erickson). The results of a great mentor-mentee relationship speak for themselves, so the world undoubtedly needs more mentors who are dedicated to positively influencing mentees, thus leading to a better future for the world. Although there are definitely a large amount of mentoring relationships across the world, I believe there is still a need for more mentors. As a mentor, there would be no better way to give back to the community than aiding in the development of a child, especially a disadvantaged one. Since there are numerous places across the globe with areas devastated by poverty and violence, more mentors are needed there than ever before. In some cases, young people who lack a figure to look up to resort to violence, drugs, and other choices that are very detrimental to their lives. If more mentors were available around the the world and spread the word about organizations, society as a whole would certainly procure a better future with more people succeeding than before.
This book shows what a role of a mentor has on someone’s life. It is a simple story about an unlikely pair of friends who learn the meaning of trust to overcome their failures and turn those failures into
He is being forced to abide by the rules in prison and at first, does not get a warm welcome by his fellow prisoners because he refuses to abide by the captains order which is simply to get their minds right. He is soon challenged to a fight by one of his fellow inmates. Throughout the fight, it is clear that Luke is being brutally beaten. He can barely stand up on his feet but he refuses to give up. To me, this is a sign of resistance of power because he does not want to just face the fact that he lost this battle.
Instead of thinking about himself, Frodo thinks of the people around him in the Shire. Like Luke where he leaves despite his fears, Frodo leaves and not only faces his fears of the unknown but goes in order for the people of the Shire to stay safe despite the fact that he may die showing his selflessness. While on the Death Star, Luke shows his selflessness when goes to save Leia when hearing of her presence on the Death Star. He insists when he talks to Han in the control room that “The droid belongs to her. She's the one in the message.. We've got to help her” (Lucas New 56). Risking his life to save someone he barely knows, Luke shows his selflessness as he wants to save Leia. Both J.R.R. Tolkien and George Lucas have their heroes commit these acts in order to show that they are selfless because through this it is shown that they care about others. Frodo and Luke demonstrate selflessness when Frodo takes up the ring at Rivendell and when Luke joins the Rebel Alliance. When taking up the responsibility to take up the ring at Rivendell at the Council of Elrond, Frodo shows his selflessness as he is cognizant that no one else is willing to take the ring and speaks up as“No one
Unlike Odysseus, Luke listens to directions carefully and tries his best to save people. When Luke was trying to defeat the Death Star, he heard Obi Wan Kenobi in his mind. Obi Wan Kenobi told Luke to believe in The Force. Luke being
Both also have a sort of supernatural force helping them, giving them an advantage over ordinary people. Luke learns the ways of the "force" which about three other people have mastered: Darth Vader who is evil, Obi-Wan his mentor, and Yoda (who he does not know yet). Bruce learns the ways of advanced ancient Ninjitsu and the ways of being one with the shadows. The two of them are also both very limited in their allies fighting against a world of evil. Luke is contained to Obi-Wan, Chewbacca, Han Solo, and eventually Leah. Bruce is limited to the few uncorrupt people in his city, Alfred, Mr. Fox, Jim Gordon, and Rachel. During the ordeal, both hero's have a long line of conflict that they must deal with. Bruce has to save Rachel, escape his on fire mansion, fight Ra's al Ghul, and then stop the city from going crazy from the gas. Luke must save Leia, escape a trash compacter, watch Obi-Wan die, escape Darth Vader's station, and finally come back to destroy it. A last similarity is that both hero's rewards made them realize what they were actually destined for. Luke
After Luke’s foster parents are killed, he decides to help former Jedi warrior, Obi Wan Kenobi, aid the Rebel Alliance in restoring freedom to the galaxy, to learn the ways of the Force, and become a Jedi. Odi Wan becomes Luke’s teacher and is later replaced by Yoda, who has trained Jedi warriors for eight hundred years.
Though Dragline had the physical advantage, Luke persevered through the beatings and had even said that he would have to be killed to be stopped. Moreover, Dragline is unable to defeat Luke and he is not allowed to kill him either. Coincidentally, Dragline leaves the ring in defeat, thus showing the whole prison that Luke has the superior authority and influence and therefore becoming the new leader (Pierson et al., 1997). Luke attempts to show that if you endure the challenges of petty authority and power [representation of Dragline], you will come out victorious and that you don’t need anything more than ‘nothing’. One of the most crucial lines of the film, spoken by the Captain, was, “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate’ (Pierson et al., 1997), and was said on behalf of the non-conformity Luke had portrayed by escaping prison.
One example that shows he is glorified is when he receives a meat for destroying the death star, Luke Skywalker was once just a typical, normal kid who was a field hand to his uncle but later turned into the brave, courageous, determined kid of whom he is now. Luke Skywalker is capable of using the force to help him with all of his challenging battles. The force is extremely strong within in Luke Skywalker. Luke is willing to look the evil demon of fear in the eyes and take the bull by the horns. What makes Luke courage’s is that the knows it is not going to be easy, he knows its going to be very difficult, but he is still willing to help the with destroying the Death Star Also, he is by far one of the most intelligent and courageous men. Skywalker uses his intelligent brain to his advantage; he’s always out thinking his opponent. Throughout all of Luke Skywalker’s battles there is always a chance of death; however Luke is willing to risk his very own life for the rebellion and Princess Leia. Luke Skywalker figures out that the droids are being followed by the evil Empire he goes back to his home to try and rescue his uncle. He always takes charge when called upon. When Princess Leia needs assistance, he steps up and lends a helping hand to rescue her. Through every adventure Luke undertakes, he shows how courageous he actually is. Courage is what guides Skywalker into conquering his fears and destroying his
Finally, the hero learns from the shadow’s strengths and weaknesses as they are the qualities that helped them succeed and ultimately the reason why they fail. In The Hobbit, Bilbo learns from Thorin’s characteristics. From the strengths side, Bilbo has learned from Thorin’s confidence and leadership. Once again, because of Thorin’s example Bilbo was able to recover more of his Took side. As demonstrated in chapter 8, during the road of trials, the battle with the spiders. This battle was the first time Bilbo really displayed his role in the quest. He showed leadership as explained in the quote: “Bilbo saw that the moment had come when he must do something” (Tolkien, 183). Bilbo also presented confidence by insulting the spiders with his lyrics. He has also learned from Thorin’s undesirable traits. Greed. From Thorin’s outcome, Bilbo sees how easy it is to give into greed. This encouraged Bilbo to make the right decisions, like handing over the Arkenstone and taking only a small amount of treasure home with him. Moreover, this also happens to be the case in Star Wars. Similar to The Hobbit, Luke also sees the consequences of the dark side through Darth Vader, and from this he learns to make better choices. Through Vader’s strengths, Luke can learn the sense of loyalty to your master. Vader had said: “You don't know the power of the dark side. I must obey my master” (Return of the
His master, Obi wan Kenobi, helped further develop the ways of the force and his Jedi senses. The Jedi masters knew that Anakin had the potential of becoming the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy, “Sometimes the tragic hero suffers from hubris, like know-it-all Oedipus” (Hanson). The Jedi Masters took precaution because they saw hints of fatal flaws in Anakin. His most tragic flaw, fear, is what restrained him for being the true good Jedi. Anakin’s fear was the death of his friends and loved ones. This fear clouded his mind and consumed
There is little scientific knowledge when it comes to mentoring effects on future outcomes; in addition posing confusion as to how these programs continue to emerge. A major component in regards to program effectiveness is in measurement or evaluation of its structure (Deutsch, N., & Spencer, R., 2009). This is done by conducting surveys, focus groups, and interviews (Deutsch, N., & Spencer, R. (2009); Karcher, M., & Nakkula, M. (2010); Diehl, D. C., Howse, R. B., & Trivette, C. M. (2011); Osgood, 2012; Williams, 2011). Studies gives the researcher insight into knowledge that otherwise wouldn’t be known, in order to understand mentoring reactions and relationship styles better (Karcher, M., & Nakkula, M. (2010); Christens, B. D., & Peterson, N. A. (2012); Diehl et al., 2011; Leyton‐Armakan, J., Lawrence, E., Deutsch, N., Lee Williams, J., & Henneberger, A. (2012); Meyer, K. C., & Bouchey, H. A. (2010).
When we watch any military motion pictures or documentaries we perceive that youthful troopers are taught that they ought to be prepared to give up their life whenever for their country. What does self-sacrifice actually mean? It’s an ability to willingly give up something good for something better. Envision a soldier fighting in the war where he has to establish a hard decision which includes either to relinquish his life to spare thousand different lives or be narrow minded and let others bite the dust. What do we anticipate from the soldier? Nearly all of the people will concur that he will give his life, and it’s true that he will as it’s his task to defend his nation. It’s not a child’s play to sacrifice happiness and spirit; one requires a large deal of strength and courage to act thus. Mot of the savants believes that one can’t evaluate the strength of someone by merely expecting at their physique, only by the readiness of self-sacrificing themselves for the betterment of others. In the movie Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring directed by Peter Jackson, the main character Frodo Baggins, his companions Marry and Pippin and a wise wizard Gandalf self-sacrificed their comfort, serenity and life in order to successfully complete their quest and to stop Sauron from crushing the Middle Earth. Sometimes individuals face compelling circumstances in their lives where they need to make life altering choices. The film proposes that by the act of self-sacrifice one can achieve internal strength that may have never existed before.
On the way to the Death Star, Luke begins his road of trials by starting his Jedi training. This will cause him to face the temptation of the dark side, throughout the rest of his training. Finally, they reach the death star and enter the dragon battle, in which they fight stormtroopers and rescue Princess Leia. When Luke finds Leia in a prison cell, which has him meeting a goddess. She has qualities like a goddess, like her beauty and power. She is a princess, so she has a lot of power. During the escape Obi-wan is spotted fighting Darth Vader, the shadow. To the other characters, not much is known about Darth Vader. He has the mission of trying to capture Luke, the hero. Obi-wan knows that his time is up and he needs to step aside, letting Luke finish the quest on his own. He lets Vader kill him, but later on in the trilogy becomes a mentor again. This also happens to be when Luke and Vader see each other during atonement with the father. Vader knows that Luke is his son, but Luke does not know that Vader is his father. He finds out later in the trilogy. Luke has a moment of refusal of the return because he wants to stay and help Obi-wan. He finally decides to leave when Han Solo says, “Luke, come on!”. In Star Wars: A New Hope, Luke follows the departure, the first stage of the hero’s
In conclusion, everyone’s have different style of guiding people that can affect the ones receiving the guidance, which can change their life in different ways such as giving them hope to do something better and by helping them to learn to solve their own problems. Therefore, mentoring styles will help the person to choose a right path and encourage them to follow a right path. Mentoring styles affect others to understand yourselves in a better way than before.
Many young people just need to be motivated and given a fair chance at success. Young people need mentors to help them find their way and to help them stay focused. Mentors play an intricate roll in your lives and are sort of liaisons between your parents or guardians and your educators.
