Disobediences is an important factor in society. Whether it is dealing with students choosing to disobey rules in school or adults rebelling against rules at work. In 1891, Oscar wilde notice, “ Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read is man’s original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress had been made, through disobedience and through rebellion” ( wilde ). In the epic poem “ Paradise Lost” by John Milton, he re creates a renowned story of Adam and Eve. The two main characters fight against the vice and virtue action of eating off the forbidden tree. The Satan persuades them to think it's a virtue, which leads to a great downfall and punishment. Therefore, disobedience is seen as a vice because there are punishments after …show more content…
Without someone breaking the rules or law there would be way to understand the differences between right and wrong. Satan mention to Eve, “ To knowledge; by the theater? Look on me, me, who have touched and tasted; yet both live” ( 9.687-688). Satan was elaborating that what harm can come from eating a piece of fruit. That Eve would only gain knowledge from this fruit that no man has ever ate. By saying this is action of disobedience seen as virtue. This has happened before during the enlightenment period, The phosphors thinkers question the reasoning. Also the thinkers wanted to know the knowledge behind the answer. When a person is told not to do somethings it's for a reason, you should not be subserous because it will just be a consequence. Eve say to the sperant, “ God so commanded, and left that command ...our reason is our law “ ( 9.652-654). The reference means that Eve going to stand by what my leader has told me and she not going to be disobey his command. This is like Pandora because Zeus stated a command to not open the box. He did tell her what in the box because he trusted that she would not open it. Pandora did in fact open the box eventually, Pandora let out bad spirits in the world. Because of Pandora being defiance lead to a negative outcome, Just like Eve. When a rule is in place is to to protect citizens from any harm but when the citizens disobey its a

According to Oscar Wilde, disobedience is a valuable human trait that promotes social progress. Civil disobedience allows for the unification of various groups to fight towards a common goal, often resulting in change. Historically, there has been much evidence supporting Wilde’s claim. Significant examples of disobedience that led to social progress include the Boston Tea Party, the Salt March, and the Civil Rights Movement.
History has encountered many different individuals whom have each impacted the 21 in one way or another; two important men whom have revolted against the government in order to achieve justice are Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr. Both men impacted numerous individuals with their powerful words, their words carried the ability to inspire both men and women to do right by their morality and not follow unjust laws. “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience” by David Henry Thoreau along with King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, allow the audience to understand what it means to protest for what is moral.
Martin Luther King and Henry David Thoreau each write exemplary persuasive essays that depict social injustice and discuss civil disobedience, which is the refusal to comply with the law in order to prove a point. In his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” King speaks to a specific audience: the African Americans, and discusses why he feels they should bring an end to segregation. Thoreau on the other hand, in “Civil Disobedience,” speaks to a broader, non-addressed audience as he largely expresses his feelings towards what he feels is an unjust government. Both essays however, focus on the mutual topics of morality and justice and use these topics to inform and motivate their audience to, at times, defy the government in order to establish the necessary justice.
Disobedience is concretely defined as “The failure or refusal to obey someone in authority”, so it is no surprise - considering the beliefs of the contemporary societies - that it is a prevalent theme in Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ and Webster’s ‘The Duchess of Malfi’. Both texts revolve around the disobedience of a central character, Eve in ‘Paradise Lost’ and The Duchess in ‘The Duchess of Malfi’, both authors intelligently explore the inevitable consequences of disobeying those higher than yourself.
Justice is often misconceived as injustice, and thus some essential matters that require more legal attentions than the others are neglected; ergo, some individuals aim to change that. The principles of civil disobedience, which are advocated in both “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau and “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr. to the society, is present up to this time in the U.S. for that purpose.
In "Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem," Erich Fromm (1963) argues that society will self-destruct without achieving freedom through disobedience. Fromm begins with analogies of Hebrew and Greek mythology showing how disobedience to a god freed humans. Using this correlation, Fromm shows freedom as a condition for disobedience, and vice- versa. Therefore, Fromm proclaims that without disobedience the human race could destroy itself within a generation.
Throughout the course of human events, unjust laws have been enacted causing members of society to infringe upon them. In Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and Sophocles’ Antigone, such acts of civil disobediences are prevalent. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag, a firefighter, lives in a book-banning society where his profession calls for him to start fires to burn books, rather than extinguish any flames. When Montag realizes his unhappiness in his life, he violates numerous laws hoping to transform society from its current state. In Antigone, the protagonist Antigone also breaks an unfavorable law that forbids the burial of her brother Polyneices, an alleged traitor, which ultimately leads to her own demise. Both Montag and Antigone commit powerful
This act of disobedience describes the first moral flaw, and the consequential corruption of mankind. By disobeying God, Adam and Eve take the first steps towards independence and freedom. This helps them reach their spiritual and intellectual capacity. After Adam and Eve leave the Garden of Eden, they create a new harmony referred to as “the end of days” (622). To the prophets, man is right to disobey; this allows him to think for himself.
One of the greatest feelings in the world is going against the grain of society and the universal fear to be different than the rest. Whether you are sparked by your own fire, or someone else’s, breaking the status quo to be diverse enhances progress. Oscar Wilde once said, “Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man’s original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress has been made, through disobedience and through rebellion.” This quote sparks interest due to disobedience often containing a negative connotation. However, in this quote disobedience is honorable, and to be called disobedient is a compliment. According to Wilde, disobedience is beneficial and without it, social progress could not be made. Without
Oscar Wilde, an Irish author, once suggested that if one were to ever look at the discourse of history, they would find that disobedience is man’s original virtue, and through disobedience social progress is made. The study of history is the study of social progress. Social progressions are the changes that occur in society that progress or improve social, political, and economic structures. Social progress can be achieved in several ways, but just like Oscar Wilde, I believe that disobedience is a valuable human trait that just so happens to be a huge part in the progression our society has made and continues to make.
When wisdom is mixed with disobedience it opens the door for evil to abound. Although Eve was the first to take of the fruit and Adam the second, both shared responsibility in the transgression as Arnold describes it. (62;67,
“You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” These are the words of God to Adam and Eve. A seemingly simple notion that Adam and Eve contravened after hearing the serpent’s persuasive appeal for power and godlike knowledge.
Paradise Lost, John Milton’s epic poem about the fall of man and the loss of Eden, is a subtly politically charged writing that reflects his own personal struggles and political viewpoints during 17th century England. There are many similarities between his epic poem and the despair and disappointment experienced during the reign of Charles I and the English Civil War. Through this poem, and with attention paid to the historical context with which it was written, Milton not only produces a great work of English literature, but also the seed for a discussion on civil disobedience and civil war.
Civil Disobedience, an essay written by Henry David Thoreau, has truly changed the way people view society and the world. Thoreau was known as an American transcendentalist and in his essay he displays the importance of defying conformity and society and encourages people to use their voice as well as implementing mimimalism. Today civil disobedience is defined as the refusal to obey certain laws, as a peaceful form of political protest (Google Dictionary).
