It is essential to build an abundance of leadership and life skills that prime an individual for success. There are an infinite amount of talents and abilities that can allow one to be a great leader and make an impact in all aspects of life, even when facing common adversity. With practice, a numerous amount of habits can also be formed that aid in self-development. Being able to do things, such as following directions can be a direct correlation to becoming a great leader, and finding the path to success. Consistency, along with the creation of a respectable work ethic, are also essential abilities to have in the arsenal that a great leader should have. Combining such skills creates a dynamic blend which allows a leader to gain the respect, trust, and obedience that one needs to lead. Without developing abilities, which are in no manner limited to a specific amount, it is impossible for one to not only to be an effective leader, but to lead at all. Which is why the importance of self- development cannot be overstressed. The ability to be a good follower of directions, comes along with several beneficial perks. Not just for the obvious reason such as being able to complete tasks correctly. However, when fully developed, something that seems so simple carries a great deal of weight. Following directions allows for one to be more efficient in the jobs to be completed. Getting things done within reasonable timing and also leaves little room for error. If one is able to follow the strict guidelines provided, there becomes a less chance of dissatisfaction. Something as simple as the ability to do things correctly, also carries the individual who possesses such skills. Developing skills such as these can carry one to all places they desire to go and beyond. However, failure to do so could be self- destructive. Following instructions, being consistent, and having a great work ethic, are all admirable factors to have. With these skills intact, it would be easy for one to gain power and lead those who chose to follow, in the proper direction to achieve and maintain true success.
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
All of these traits begin with the individual realizing who he is and where he stands to become a leader. Like Jack Welch said, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. Leadership is inspiring others to learn more, do more, and become more. Ineffective fail to possess certain characteristics which effective leaders do. Willingness to help others, selflessness, and strictness; these are the qualities of a both good and effective leader. Without these qualities, leadership would fail and being a leader would mean nothing.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
Leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person. Leadership can best be called the personality of the very highest ability-whether in ruling, thinking, imagining, innovation, warring, or religious influencing. Leadership is practiced not so much in words a it is in attitude and in actions. Their actions leave a long lasting memory in the line of history and lead up to may events that occur today. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. These innate talents help to make up a leader that will succeed and be efficient in carrying out tasks. But, the purpose of this paper is determine what truly makes a leader successful. A successful leader should be considered more on their impact rather than their accomplishments of their organizations alone for they are not sufficient in determining the key to their success .
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.
A leader needs to “believe” in oneself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, do have some relevance for being in existence. Believe it or not, “leadership begins with you”.
A leader must possess this type of thinking of continuing learning not just thinking in the box but instead think outside the box. The leader is not inherent it was learned or skills that need practice or learned through continuous studies and experience. A leader must have a passion for learning in order to learn effectively, the needs to be open to new experiences and getting feedback from those around him or her. Without feedback, there is no room for improvement. A leader must focus on a room of improvement; he or she must evaluate the outcomes, if it is contributed or not. There are five elements of deliberate practice for consistent improvement: it is designed specifically to improve performance, it has to be repeated a lot, feedback on results must be continuously available, it is highly demanding mentally, and it is not that much fun. This work will discuss my personal perspective regarding leadership development, examine leadership theory and characteristics in order to evaluate the origin of strong leadership and reflect on the importance of leadership in higher education administration.

Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic.
