I think that the value that the panelist’s kept on going back to was the value of community. All of the values are interrelated here at St. Scholastica, and I think that all of our Benedictine values build up to our sense of community. All of the panelist’s mentioned how they missed the community at St. Scholastica. They missed people opening doors for them, and people waving hello when passing by. The panelist’s voiced how important it is to build community within their personal and professional lives. It is important to treat all people with respect, with dignity. I think that I see myself living out this value at CSS through interactions with my fellow classmates. It is important to make everyone feel like they are a part of society, and
that they can contribute to societal roles. Just saying hello to someone can go a long way in developing community. I think that your community has a lot to do with your personal development as well. In a warm and welcoming community, people will feel safe to express themselves, and they will be able to contribute to society in a healthy manner. All of the Benedictine values are lifelong values. They do not stop once you graduate, they are constantly developing throughout your lifetime. No matter what I choose to do, I know that I will continue to develop my sense of community. Every career pathway has a sense of community, and I just hope that I will be able to contribute something to my community, to improve upon itand upon myself. As a citizen, I will give back to my community by volunteering. I think that volunteering is extremely beneficial in developing a strong sense of community. Not only does it strengthen the community, but it also allows for you to reach out and meet new people and learn about their experiences.
Boniface Wimmer is regarded as one of the greatest missionaries of the nineteenth century. His mission was to establish a Benedictine monastery abroad in the United States to help the thousands of Catholic Germans who fled from their homeland in search of a better life. “Today, there are over thirty Abbeys and monasteries that take their root from Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B.” With the grace of God, Boniface Wimmer succeeded. He was considered to be a “man on a mission.” His tenacious attitude aided him in spreading the mission of the Benedictine Order across the Atlantic Ocean. The Benedictines were seen not only as missionaries, but also as teachers and priests. The strong sense of bonding and connection within the community was vital to the Benedictine Order then, as it still is today.
In the inspiring movie The Great Debaters, a group of three African Americans rises to the top of the debate scene despite the handicap of being black and coming from the small town of Marshall, Texas. The debaters wouldn’t have grown throughout the story if their debate coach Professor Tolson hadn’t taught them things like facing reality and how to overcome difficult situations. Thanks to their debate coach, Professor Tolson, who despite his radical political views, empowers the debaters until they are able to triumph over large state schools and eventually Harvard at the end. When Jesus walked the earth his twelve disciples put aside all of their worldly possessions and worldly pursuits to fully and faithfully follow him. After the fall of Rome, Europe slipped into what has been referred to as the “dark ages.” However, even in these dark ages men and women put aside their secular desires and devoted themselves to a life of celibacy and simplicity. This similar desire between many people drew them together and this pursuit became know as monasticism. No one had a bigger influence on this way of life and on these people who chose this calling than Saint Benedict of Nursia. His teachings and life would have an impact on monasticism all throughout Europe helping to form its spirituality and culture.
At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. I had many personal connections to these values. I also had a lot of fun thinking of ways I will incorporate teaching these lessons to my students. One of the main examples that always came to mind was modeling the values with my students. They will be very influential at the ages I will be working with. Many of the students will think anything their teacher does is the coolest thing ever. This is a great way to get the values across to the students. ... integrity. Through the Community Action Program I visited two third grade classes at the elementary school that my company sponsors. The school is sorely lacking in funds and many of the children come from homes where their families are struggling to provide them with the skills necessary to succeed in school. I taught the students for five weeks about the variety of skills one must learn to run a business and how various businesses are needed for a city to function. Each classroom was comprised entirely of children from one of two different ethnic groups, but both were from homes where English was not the first language. I believe my affinity for developing relationships with and between people will be an asset both in the classroom and in the legal profession. I look forward to rising to the challenge of constant change and growth in the ever-evolving field of law.
When people announce they are entering a monastery or convent, they are often met with reactions of awe and admiration. Although this decision entails long arduous devotion, it is assumed that this man or woman has made a sound decision. Many are under the impression that a life lived to solely serve God will ultimately bring out the best version of oneself. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. I interviewed my grandmother, father and mother for this project. It was very interesting to uncover many of the stories and values that I was unaware of throughout my life. My father’s mother is currently 91 years old and offered a difficult interview by giving me too many stories to analyze for this project. In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class. Learning in group class is taught me the tools to use to work with groups therapy, communities and also with individuals through the process of changes. In this past three months I think a lot of opportunities have been created to shadowing with (beside and behind) and being a part of group members to learn. In addition, this class has taught me about the skills and how effectively help
