Boniface Wimmer is regarded as one of the greatest missionaries of the nineteenth century. His mission was to establish a Benedictine monastery abroad in the United States to help the thousands of Catholic Germans who fled from their homeland in search of a better life. “Today, there are over thirty Abbeys and monasteries that take their root from Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B.” With the grace of God, Boniface Wimmer succeeded. He was considered to be a “man on a mission.” His tenacious attitude aided him in spreading the mission of the Benedictine Order across the Atlantic Ocean. The Benedictines were seen not only as missionaries, but also as teachers and priests. The strong sense of bonding and connection within the community was vital to the Benedictine Order then, as it still is today.
On the fourteenth of January 1809, Sebastian Wimmer was born in the small town of Thalmassing, Germany. His parents, Peter and Elizabeth Lang Wimmer, were tavern keepers. Sebastian’s desire to help other individuals was apparent at an early age, for he believed he had been called by the Lord to devote his life exclusively to the priesthood. The simple monastic life was enticing! Sebastian Wimmer was an intelligent young man. He attended the University of Regensburg, also known as Ratisbon, where he studied many classical and philosophical courses, and later studied law at the University of Regensburg. A scholarship opened up in the Gregorianum, and Wimmer felt obligated to learn more about it in pursuit of his study for the priesthood. Wimmer took the competitive scholarship exam. He was a young Benedictine monk, who traveled to America in 1846, with the vision of establishing new monastic communities for the Benedictine Order. He wanted to convert the immigrants who sought refuge in America. Most importantly, he wanted to create a community that would grow in the spirit of Saint Benedict. Archabbot Boniface Wimmer was a heavenly father who guided many young monks on their spiritual journeys. At the consecration of the St. Vincent Archabbey, Bishop Canevin paraphrased Boniface’s accomplishments with these eloquent words, “Blessed is he that not gone after gold, nor put his trust in money nor treasure. Who is he that we will praise him? For he hath done wonderful things in life.”
Lawrence Willoughby, an African American male, was born in 1881 in Pitt County, North Carolina. He was the son of Lannie Anderson and X Willoughby. Lawrence married at 22,a woman by the name of Jennie Best on December 20, 1903. Records says that the two married in Pitt County, North Carolina. They had eight children in 13 years. He died on August 4, 1951, in Greenville, North Carolina, at the age of 70.
In May of 1929 President Herbert Hoover appointed the Wickersham Commission with former U.S. Attorney General George W. Wickersham. The Wickersham Commission is officially called the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement. The commission was in response to the public’s concern about crime and also was a way to resolve the debate of continuing prohibiting. Wickersham at the time was an attorney and a former cabinet member, as its chairmen. The Commission was the first review in the United States of federal review and law enforcement. It consisted of judges, educators, lawyers, that represented all sections of the country. The commission was made up of eleven subcommittees, and it published the 14 reports in 1931. St. Boniface, originally named Winfrith, was an extremely studious man, a converted monk, priest, missionary and finally martyr. Born in 672, near Exeter, England, St. Boniface at an early age developed a desire to follow the path of God and live a monastic life. Through non-stop prayer and religious practices, he tuned his mind and body to reach beyond the obstacles and enticements of everyday life at his young adult age. He was a major influence on society during his life and affected the lives and history of Germany permanently. Often called the “Apostle of Germany”, St. Boniface was a strong believer in the principles of the Church and truly wanted to open any pagan believers minds to the knowledgeable and rewarding path of the Christian life.
In Dr. Osman’s lecture and in Life and Miracles of St. Benedict, monasteries were portrayed as places for people to escape the harsh times and live together worshipping God. In The Dark Ages, the narrator discusses how many nuns and monks would try to escape because they were forced to go there, some even going as far as scaling the walls of their convent or monastery.
