As a peer leader, I find myself taking on a multitude of roles, such as a friend, leader, mentor, and support system just as Dr. Frey stated in her interview. In sources of strength, the members are chosen as someone who would be a person anyone could come up and talk with if they were having a bad day. Also, as seniors we have two seventh grade kids that we mentor. I do this because I remember how hard it was being a seventh grader and not really knowing much about high school. Once a week we sit down and talk with the children. I always love the stories they have to tell and I truly feel blessed when I can help with anything they are struggling with. One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.
As written in the book Student Leadership by Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, he outlines many ways on how a student should lead their peers. Lautzenheiser believes that a student leader shouldn’t be chosen for how talented, popular, or how well their academic standing is. Instead the student leader should be chosen for how well they interact with others and how they are considerate of their peers. Being dedicated is a quality that every leader should obtain, but being cooperative and giving are the two levels of maturity that a student should be at before receiving a leadership position.
As a person who is for the most part uncomfortable with change, it is important that I find ways be a leader in a world that is ever changing. In order to be the best and most prepared leader as possible, it is necessary to be aware of one’s core identity and the values, talents, and strengths that are included in this. Consistent with the indications of Vaill’s term, “permanent white water”, the tendency of the world to change is unavoidable and “continual”. We as leaders must find ways to adapt and acclimate ourselves to these situations. Through the discovery of my core values, talents, leadership style, I will be able to develop an action plan to transform my talents into strengths and use leadership techniques to best accommodate my ambitions.
...t I’m learning now by being in PLP is helping me prepare for these goals and life dreams. This is being achieved through the other students I not only live with, but also have class with, the volunteering opportunities, the classes, and the connections. One of my favorite quotes to live by is from William Arthur Ward and that is, “If you can dream it, you can achieve it,” and I feel like I am working towards just that at this point in my life.
The personal leadership development plan is to capture the self-awareness of an individual. People in general have a difficult time trying to figure out who they are and how they view themselves plus how others may see them. This plan will touch on my personal strengths, areas of improvement, and also identify me as a person more in-depth. The Personal Profile System and the Team Dimensions Profile will be used to provide an understanding.

My peer leader philosophy boils down to one word thing every leader, regardless of position, should be doing: being an epitome, that is setting the example. I write this as my fist point because I feel it is one of the most important aspects as a leader–never asking what you yourself is not willing to do. When a leader sets the example, it is easier for those under their tutelage to follow the leader and see the leader as someone who they strive to be. As a peer leader for an APSU 1000 one of the subjects that could be presented, is the importance of going to class and doing well in those classes. If I am telling students to always be on time, ask questions in class, and get to know your professors, I should be doing those things.
