As written in the book Student Leadership by Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, he outlines many ways on how a student should lead their peers. Lautzenheiser believes that a student leader shouldn’t be chosen for how talented, popular, or how well their academic standing is. Instead the student leader should be chosen for how well they interact with others and how they are considerate of their peers. Being dedicated is a quality that every leader should obtain, but being cooperative and giving are the two levels of maturity that a student should be at before receiving a leadership position.
To begin, a student should be dedicated to their activity of choice before applying for a leadership position since being a leader isn't just about acquiring a

title. Being a leader means that you’ll have to make personal sacrifices, have patience, and be committed for having your peers and yourself wanting to strive for the best. As a leader, one must take great understanding “that true leadership requires an individual to do more than his or her counterparts; it is about serving others” (101). Being dedicated means that you have the patience to help and give constructive advice to your peers while maintaining a positive environment that infuses the group with needed energy to move forward. In addition to being dedicated to your activity and wanting your peers to strive for the best, as an individual you have to be willing to cooperate with your team.
Being cooperative with your peers means that you listen to their concerns, are willing to give constructive advice and offer help, and have a mutual understanding. While leading a team, a student must be flexible and is able to communicate with their peers . By being flexible the student is able to accept new schedules and is able to adapt easily, is calm in difficult situations, takes on new challenges at a short notice, and is able to think quickly to provide a solution to a sudden change in circumstance. Communicating with your peers is very important physically and mentally. Communication is important physically because if a practice is canceled your peers need to know, it's also important that your peers know their role in the team and what they are expected to do. A student leader should communicate with their peers because trust throughout the team ensures integrity and without communication team members would be useless if they didn't know what to do. Cooperation within a team in very important because without it how is your team going to work together to strive for the
best. Finally, a student leader should be giving. A giving student leader is someone who helps their peers without requiring any form of reciprocation. A leader should be able to help their team with the idea of delight, not with the idea of being forced to do it. Being giving can make individual students feel discouraged at moments for nobody recognizing their dedication and hardwork. Even though personal acknowledgement is appreciated in life “ a mature leader is clearly aware that the most important affirmation of his or her leadership success is often disguised in the extension of more work and extra responsibilities” (100). A giving student should be appreciated for being willing to help their team with no hesitation and is able to communicate with their team about certain circumstances. In conclusion, a student leader should be selected for the amount of maturity they displayed and their dedication to the program.. As an individual, I display my dedication through my performances, by challenging myself for the better, and by encouraging my teammates to push themselves to succeed. Through daily activities, I’m cooperative by being able to communicate with my team members and classmates, I handle sudden and difficult situations in a calm matter, and I listen and take acknowledgement to my peers when given a concern or asked a question. Helping my teammates and peers brings me delight as an individual because seeing how my peers are able to succeed with my help is enough to show that I’m able to help them in troubling times.
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Yet,
Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. With this, I can confidently say that since seventh grade, as a young adult, I have been shaped into an individual that fits these traits. Since that time, I have been involved in student government,
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I had many issues doing this throughout my project because I am only one person and I can’t be everywhere at once. Thusly made being a leader a drudgery. But I had an incredible set of adults guiding me along the way, who taught me that being a leader was not doing everything myself, being a leader
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
A leader needs to “believe” in oneself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, do have some relevance for being in existence. Believe it or not, “leadership begins with you”.
Each University holds unique student life ideals. Taylor University, as a Christian liberal arts school, believes in the significance of student leadership. Taylor offers opportunities all across campus as well as within each of the dormitories. Determining the type of leaders needed requires analyzing each hall’s unique personality. Olson Hall is known as the largest all women’s hall on campus (Olson Hall). With approximately 300 women divided among three floors positive communication must exist. The three floors divide into wings where about 30 women live in mostly two man rooms. Within the dormitory two residence life directors serve as resources for the women. In order to minimize any one person having too much responsibility each wing
Molecular and Microbiology. Many people hear the major and shudder; thoughts of sleepless nights, studying for courses unintelligible by the ‘average’ person, mad scientists hunched over test tubes and doctors doing open heart surgery. Research science and medicine, that’s what my major is geared towards, and I’m pursuing the medicine side of it all. Maybe I’ll be that open heart surgeon that comes to mind, or maybe just a family practitioner, either way, I want more than anything to be a doctor, a great doctor, and while my M&M degree is the first step in making that happen, I’d have to say that being a Lead Scholar is the second. Many people may not see the medical profession as one that requires being a leader to others, as you make your own decisions and people feel that you work on your own. You consult patients, help them with their problems, you work on each one on your own. If there is any involvement with any other health professional, people think it’s more like a team, with little to no individual leadership. They’re wrong, and right. Being a doctor is being a part of a team, and being a part of a team¬ does take personal leadership.

One very important aspect of a great leader is to lead by example. Any person in a position to guide others cannot ask the team to do one thing and act in the complete opposite way. This is a sure way to show that the leader has a need to show power and quickly loose respect from those who should be learning from him or her. Being a role model is importan...
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
Effective communication encompasses many concepts. For a leader to be effective, one must be able to build relationships between different parties. In order to build a good rapport, one must be able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of those involved, and within oneself. Acknowledging these differences will allow for a better collaboration between team members. A leader must also have the ability to put conflict resolution theories into practice. Allowing differing points of view may challenge the original idea and will make for a more thorough decision making process. Although this may seem counterproductive, it actually ensures the best possible outcome. One must be consistent in the message presented yet be flexible, approachable and maintain a positive attitude. Allowing for different perspectives to be heard will allow team members to feel valued. This flexibility helps to solidify the concept that everyone is in this together; thus establishing an environment where all team members can have a buy-in. Encouraging team members to voice opinions and give feedback produces an atmosphere of constructive give-and-take; a real t...
In developing my own educational leadership model (MELM) I began with establishing what I believe the goal of education should be, since leaders by definition are leading people towards something. The goal of education is to effectively teach students the essential skills and knowledge they will need to establish a productive, positive, self-sufficient life where they can be active members of their communities. An effective leader, while working towards this goal will need to consider the present conditions and demands of the environment they are a part of. In the field of education, both internal and external factors are of crucial importance when developing a plan to lead for success. However, one must note the variables in education are different than those the business sector face, for example; student performance, ability and cultural differences; availability/condition of supplies and materials; goal; educator’s capability, views and attitudes; conditionality of economic support; openness/hostility of influencing communities; state or government performance mandates. A leader who knows where they (students, school, district, community) are now, can approach goals more clearly and develop more effective strategies to arrive at them.
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Learning to put others before yourself, making sacrifices, and showing direction was something that I felt was important for leadership. This required me to use a majority of my personal time to lead by example. In the meantime, multitasking with school, work, band and church became a demanding priority. As I also participated in Youth Group weekly, I learned to balance daily activities and time management. With these skills, it was proven that school can really shape someone into a better person, meanwhile educating them all together.
