Each University holds unique student life ideals. Taylor University, as a Christian liberal arts school, believes in the significance of student leadership. Taylor offers opportunities all across campus as well as within each of the dormitories. Determining the type of leaders needed requires analyzing each hall’s unique personality. Olson Hall is known as the largest all women’s hall on campus (Olson Hall). With approximately 300 women divided among three floors positive communication must exist. The three floors divide into wings where about 30 women live in mostly two man rooms. Within the dormitory two residence life directors serve as resources for the women. According to the Taylor University Student Handbook, personnel assistants’ responsibilities include maintaining an overall positive environment for the wing. Any basic issues that come up fall under PA jurisdiction. Discipleship assistants have a bit of a different role. DA’s responsibilities include walking alongside the women on the wing in order to increase spiritual development and encouraging discipleship. Any faith based issues or celebrations fall under DA territory. This role proves both rewarding and demanding. At times it may seem like an infinite amount of people look up to you for spiritual wisdom. Having tough conversations and leading the leaders of small groups is all part of the job (Feagens). Busyness surrounds this title, but the rewards never cease. DA’s have a unique opportunity to grow closer to women on the wing both individually and in group settings. To support up to 30 women as they struggle with life can easily feel overwhelming. DA’s celebrate positive steps forward, but they also must mourn with the struggling. All the DA’s in Olson Hall gather together once a week for a meeting. Bournique explained it this way, “Our meetings consist of testimonies, prayer, stories, fun times like ivanhoes or going to the bridge, we talk about our floors-struggles and the fun stuff! WE [sic] talk about events we are putting on and share life together.” The DA’s support each other in their personal struggles as well as their wings struggles. This community is extremely beneficial in order to prevent one person from feeling like they must carry the burden on their own. Even with this support some people feel the responsibilities weighing on their shoulders. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Ms. Lamb began ministering to women years ago by having bible studies in her home. Deborah shared, “In 2000, my father gave me a big old Victorian house and told me I could do whatever I wanted with it”. So Ms. Lamb decided to open a home for women in crisis situation who were in need of a place to live, or to work on their recovery from addictions.
The OU Sooner Housing Center (SHC) is comprised of three housing facilities (The Jefferson House, The Jones House, and the Bud Wilkinson House) and a dining hall (The Wagner Dining Hall) which creates a family-like environment solely for residents. The Jefferson House houses all female residents, while the Jones House and Bud Wilkinson (referred to as “the Bud”) houses all males. The Wagner dining hall provides meals services only for students, faculty, and staff living in the three Sooner Housing Center. The first floor of the Bud is the “community center” which provides computers, a television, sitting areas, Ping-Pong and pool tables, a laundry room, and a main office. In the past, the Bud served only as athletic housing, but by 1996, the houses were converted to shared housing for both athlete (49%) and non-athlete (51%) “The change from all athletic housing to shared on-campus housing was originally mandated by the NCAA rules. As a result, the OU Athletics Department decided to take a creative approach and provide quality housing for all students” (Sooner Sports NP).
A Physician Assistant (PA) practices medicine with a national and state license. They are authorized to prescribe medicine in all the fifty states (What is a PA? para. 1). Physician Assistants’ responsibilities vary on the state laws, the practice setting, and their experience. They can perform procedures, get medical histories, conduct physical examinations, diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medications, order and interpret laboratory tests, and assist in surgeries and counseling (What is a PA? para. 3) PA’s can care for about eighty percent of patient conditions (Vorvick & Zieve para. 2).

In order to achieve and sustain success exemplary leaders have to effectively communicate a clear vision, cultivate a team environment and establish cooperative goals. Coach Boone displayed several actions and behaviors that represent The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.
I attended an AA meeting at the 5th street fellowship on October 6, 2015. I looked forward to attending this meeting since the beginning of the clinical rotation. The meeting exceeded my expectations. It was an eye-opener and a life changing experience. The meeting at the 5th Street Fellowship consisted of a leader and two members. Even though there was only a smaller group gather, I could see the positive impact AA has had on each of the members personally, regardless of years of sobriety. The chairman of the group discussed the influence his sponsor, AA, and the 12-step program has had on his life and how he lives a happier, healthier, and a spiritual life due to his sobriety. I had always heard people talk about people they knew with disabilities as “the sweetest people you will ever meet,” but that phrase meant nothing to me until I met this group. I honestly could never have imagined the impact that they would have on my life. The next time that I went back after my first session, I had participants say things like, “You came back! Hi!” or “Look, it’s Megan! Megan everybody!” As an introvert, it is sometimes difficult for me to approach new people and immediately build relationships with them. This group of people has absolutely no issues waving at strangers to making friends effortlessly. They made me feel appreciated and loved having only been with them for one session, and this feeling grows each time I
Pages 94 - 108 discuss the floor and how the girls interacted with one another upon move in day and throughout the semester. The section begins with a description of Alana who felt a lack of connection with the girls on her floor. The other girls on her floor had only hung out with her once, and they used her as a designated driver causing Alana to not want to return to MU her sophomore year. By the end of the year, half the floor were defined as isolates including Alana because they can only claim one other friend (other than roommate) on the floor. Eighteen of these twenty five women were from less privileged families. They are “less likely to have the funds, time, social tastes, and knowledge necessary to successfully engage in college social life” causing them to have trouble fitting in (Armstrong/Hamilton, 96).
The flexibility of Physician’s Assistants is very appealing. The ability to be able to change practices if situations arose in which I needed different hours, needed to move, or simply wanted a change from the patients and conditions being seen is another factor in the decision to apply to PA school. Growing up, my step father worked in construction, and would be gone for several periods at a time. I watched as my mother was lonely during that time because she did not have a job in which she could move with my step father. Sometimes that period was years at time with visits only on the weekends or every three weeks.
The book “The Leadership Pipeline How to Build the Leadership Powered Company”, discusses the need to establish clearly defined passages from the individual contributor to the Enterprise Manager. In the first section of the book we review the characteristics needed to succeed as a Group Manager. These characteristics are all built on efficacious passage from the previous level of manager. If an individual was not fully proficient and had not made the transition from one level to the next he or she will clog the leadership pipeline and will prevent effective management, both above the clog and below the clog.
One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.
In developing my own educational leadership model (MELM) I began with establishing what I believe the goal of education should be, since leaders by definition are leading people towards something. The goal of education is to effectively teach students the essential skills and knowledge they will need to establish a productive, positive, self-sufficient life where they can be active members of their communities. An effective leader, while working towards this goal will need to consider the present conditions and demands of the environment they are a part of. In the field of education, both internal and external factors are of crucial importance when developing a plan to lead for success. However, one must note the variables in education are different than those the business sector face, for example; student performance, ability and cultural differences; availability/condition of supplies and materials; goal; educator’s capability, views and attitudes; conditionality of economic support; openness/hostility of influencing communities; state or government performance mandates. A leader who knows where they (students, school, district, community) are now, can approach goals more clearly and develop more effective strategies to arrive at them.
Leaders are dishonest. Although some are unintentionally dishonest, it can lead to the deterioration of trust between the leader and his or her followers. An ideal leader is effective when there is trust established between both the leader and the followers. According to Michelle Bligh, trust is an “expectation or belief that one can rely on another person's actions and words and that the person has good intentions to carry out their promises” (21). Leaders gain trust when they are consistently honest and communicate well with their followers. In return, followers respect an honest leader and obey commands without issues. Respect causes a positive environment because authoritative figures and subordinates can rely on each other to achieve the
The old system of management has undergone many changes within the last century. An employee once performed the assigned job duties during the allotted hours and then went home. Now employees are encouraged to grow, give input, and to contribute for the good of the organization. There is a plethora of information for leaders to learn why and how to grow personally thus allowing the organization to grow as well. This new emerging leader is a transformational leader.
