In his 2018 campaign advertisement ‘Our Family’ Calvin Klein partners with the notorious Kardashian family to illustrate his brand. This advertisement promotes the dysfunction of this family and not only promotes it but normalizes it as well. The Kardashian sisters and portrayed unrealistically as a result of plastic surgery and photoshop, in this they create unrealistic standards for women to live up to. Following, they are well known for being vicious with one another and to all other woman that are in their same social class. If it is not nasty social media posts, interviews, or just what they openly speak about on their television shows. ‘Our Family’ advertises this behavior and tolerates it promoting that young woman should act this way to receive …show more content…
Kylie’s plastic surgery got so publicized that there was a “Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge” that went viral on line for young teen girls. They would put their lips in bottle caps, vacuums, or anything that is a circular pattern to make their lips appear larger. This became so famous and made Kylie so well known that she now has her own makeup line. As a result of the publication of fashion lines, magazines, and media they normalized this behavior from teen girls are exploit it for a profit. In this picture alone the girls look natural, hardly touched, with perfect features that fit their faces perfectly. Creating a social norm for women and as a result having a standard that is impossible to live up to. All of the sisters in this picture are showing skin however Kim and Kourtney are the most exposed and they are so skinny that you can see their ribcage to an unhealthy extent. In media there is lots of talk about how skinny a model should be or if “zero” should be considered a size. With this advertisement the Kardashians are setting high and unrealistic expectations for women. Size 0 should not be considered a size yet in this picture
Out of the many commercials that are out in television, one that stood out to me was the Kim Kardashian T-Mobile’s Data Stash commercial. At first sight, viewers may see it as a joke, although it does have important information being featured. They use Kim Kardashian because she is famous and the year it was aired, her popularity was very high. The commercial seems very stupid, but it still presents rhetorical devices. As Parker and Chavez said, “It was one of the most anticipated Super Bowl ads of 2015. But the reaction was far from winning” (para. 1).
Societal constructs of bodily perfection have a massive influence on both genders and on all ages. If you look at any magazine, you will see women constantly being compared to each other, whether it is in the “who wore it better” section or in the “do’s and don’ts” part of the magazine, comparing body images and overall appearances. All parts of the media that encompasses our daily lives are especially dangerous for young and impressionable teens because they see people being torn down for trying to express themselves, and are thus taught to not only don’t look like “don’ts”, but also look like the “do’s”. This is dangerous in that women in the magazine set very high standards that teens want to emulate, no matter the cost to themselves or their health. Celebrities have the benefit of media to make them appear perfect: Photoshop and makeup artists conceal the imperfections that are often too apparent to the naked eye. Viewing celebrities as exhibiting the ideal look or as idols will, in most cases, only damage the confidence of both young teens, and adults, and warp the reality of what true “beauty” really is. It makes teens never feel truly content with themselves because they will be aiming for an ideal that is physically impossible to attain and one that doesn’t exist in the real
Currently, over-drawn lips topped with a bold, heavy lipstick is a make-up trend. As teenage girls scroll through social media platforms, such as Instagram, they see “Instagram models” and celebrities just a little older than themselves sporting this look. In turn, they want to try out this same look, but do not have the 50 dollars these models and celebrities typically spend on a tube of lipstick. When the average teenage girl sees the advertisement for Burt’s Bees lipstick, they are drawn to buy the product. Odds are, they already trust the brand, as discussed in the previous paragraph, and they know it will be much more affordable than the lipsticks they see the girls on Instagram using.
There was a trend going around called the Kylie Jenner lip challenge, which is where people would put their mouth into a shot glass and suck out all the air so that when they removed the cup the blood would rush into their lips and make them look big. They are trying to make fun of the fact that Kylie got lip injections. When Kylie released her lip kits, she was trying to make a way to plump up people's lips without injections, that way they can have her signature look without getting any cosmetic work done. No matter what she did to try to please the public she would get made fun
Chanel’s recent ad includes the models to be practically naked. This definitely becomes an issue in our society, because women are constantly represented as sexualized objects. The model is seen wearing only a rope with little flowers on it wrapped around her body. The Chanel bottle which is the size of her body is in her lap covering the front of her body up. Without the bottle covering her body it might as well have been a pornographic image. Luckily, the Chanel bottle is covering the model up. This image is without a doubt a modern example of the sexualization of women in ads. The Advertising industry is constantly objectifying women in ads. The model has flawless skin, almost as if it was photoshopped (which it was). It’s clear that the model is tall and very skinny.
She grabs the foundation and smothers her face with it; she creates a mask. She sprays the hairspray till the fumes clog the air. She squeezes into her bejeweled dress and puts on her heels. She transforms into someone who is unrecognizable, and fake. This is a little girl. The process of preparing for a beauty pageant is very demanding and stressful while little girls spend hours training and getting ready for their appearance on stage. Weeks are spent choreographing their dance routines and thousands of dollars are spent on, “glitzy” dresses, fake teeth, and spray tans. As long as beauty pageants for girls under the age of 16 continue, there will be an increase in mental and physical issues, an increase in the objectification of women, and there will be negative impacts for little girls.
The television sitcom Modern Family produced by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd shows the many different types of a modern American family. According to Andrew Hampp, “The show is among the most-viewed scripted programs in prime time in its second season, averaging 11 million viewers during original airings and often ranked as the most DVRed program most weeks” (2). The television show is a frequently watched show and is liked by many viewers. Modern Family's storyline helps the families of viewers by being an influential and relatable show to different types of families. The show is about the lives of three different families that are all related. In the show there are Jay and Gloria, an intergenerational couple with two sons-- Manny (from Gloria’s previous relationship) and Joe, their new baby. Jay’s adult son Cameron is married to his gay partner Mitchell, and they adopted Lily from Vietnam. Finally, Jay’s daughter Claire is married to her heterosexual partner named Phil and they have three children. The show is influential to our culture today because it shows these different types of families and addresses controversial themes such as gay adoption, the different family connections and communications, intergenerational coupling, and acceptance of diversity within an extended family. The family is easy to relate to while watching because it is based off of real family situations.
Bandwagon appeal is used by the visual of Kim and the Kardashian name as popularity. Lastly, the Appeal to doubtful is also presented by the Kardashian name due to, they are non-experts defending their product through status rather than evidence. These logical fallacies being used is what strengthens the ad and brings in the
Family has played an intricate role in the development of the society in which we live. The diversity in which families are formed is now becoming even more diverse with the American culture, which is changing at a rapid pace. Diverse cultures coupled with social economic challenges are key contributors to the dramatic change to the institution of family. With these challenges facing the institution of family, this closely tightknit unit which has been the cornerstone of American society has diminishing from a traditional standpoint. Non-kinship family networks like the one described in Karen V. Hansen’s “The Cranes, An Absorbent Safety Net,” goes against the norm of the common institution of family within America. Although the Crane family
Family, a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. Although family is a concretely defined term, the idea of family varies from person to person. But, what makes a family? For those who are surrounded by loving blood relatives, for those who have never known the one to grant them life, for those who have left their blood behind for a more loving and nurturing environment, what can commonly define a family? Family is something defined by the individual. Family includes those who you have come to love, whether platonically or romantically, those you have suffered with, those you have come to respect, and most importantly those you have cared for and in turn have cared for you. To one that could mean people who
When the word “family” is discussed most people think of mothers, fathers, and other siblings. Some people think of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even cousins and more on the pedigree tree. Without family in people 's lives they would not be the same people that they grew up to be today and in the future. When people hear the word family they think about, the ones who will help them in any way they can whether it 's money, support, advice, or anything to help them succeed in life. Family will forever be the backbone of support. They are the ones who support their children during those life decisions. Family is not always blood related. Finally family is forever, family will never go away.
In comparison, these are two major celebrities that are in the public eye and that makes them appeal to ethos because the advertisements relies on the characters to convince the audience since the celebrities that are representing the brand are credible and well known around the world. These celebrities are credible because they are public figures and some people view them as icons and role models. The brands are attracting a certain crowd, the millennials, and the two celebrities biggest fan base are of the younger generation. In the younger generation it is all about appearance and the Calvin Klein ad uses model that fits the American image of attractiveness. In order to gain the interest in the generation, Calvin Klein often features famous models, musicians, actors and actresses that have the ability to grasp the attention of the audience that
How can a simple six letter word be so complicated to define? Family is a single word that is open to many interpretations depending on the individual. If you try to condense this ideal to a single clinical definition you end up excluding numerous members of society. What comes to mind when you think of the word family? While in the most broken down and literal sense, family means a relative with a blood or legal bond, the word family can encompass blood relations, adoptions, and even intentional relationships such as friendships. Economies, cultures, and backgrounds can further differentiate what one’s perception of a family is. For many people, including me, a family is so much more. It is the amount of commitment, cohesiveness, and importance
Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Family is very valuable and important to you and should never be taken for granted. No one can deny that family is the foundation of our generation. A family is where we all start our life journey and helps us grow to be successful throughout our lives.
The social institution I have chosen to address is that of family. An individual’s family life, both past and present, can have such a big impact on a person’s life in both a positive and negative manner. It is how we as individuals chose to handle life changing situations that will shape our lives and those around us. Family is such a fascinating social institution to study because every individual comes from a different family background or has a different experience than that of a sibling. You can learn so many things about a person by looking into their family background, origin and what type of up brining they had.
