In offices, the space of employees is either detrimental or healthy for successful companies in today’s economy. In open office space, individuals can’t retain culturist views on how work is completed. It is important to allow employees to complete tasks in a comfortable environment in which they can focus and efficiently work. Companies will achieve more if their employees are successful and that is only possible in closed offices.
Open office space is the loss of separation between employees. “A number-one issue associated with working in open offices”(source F) is the loss of a can-do-it attitude. Employees lose the idea of an individual goal they must achieve by working around people that all have a common quota. Nobody has the encouragement of going above and beyond the all-around goal. Open office space creates a tense atmosphere amongst co-workers and does not allow individuals to have a private work space.

Due to other employees having the access to barge into other workers business, there is a situation of people “struggling to work efficiently”(source F). This results in loss of productivity. Company ratings then go down as productivity decreases as well. Thus people feel physically and mentally strained to work harder and get more hours in. Since people are always getting hired, the “densification we’ve [businesses] seen happening in the environment”(source F) was just getting “out of control”(source F). This distraction causes employees to become forgetful, inattentive, and reduced capacity in the brain to create effective work. Coworkers also have to try to maintain their space when close to other employees. Papers become shuffled together, drinks and food may damage someone's property etc. Not only has open office space “eliminated privacy for his [the manager’s] staff, it has also eliminated privacy for him [the manager]”(source C). Executives in a business don’t have their own office either. Without their own office space, supervisors can’t discretely promote, hire, or fire an individual. If an employee does something different than the standard ideal way then another employee could correct them; however, it does not benefit individuals when trying to create original work and having people breathe down their necks. In different businesses the “office was beautifully air, and yet remarkably oppressive”(source B). Individuality is suppressed because workers are expected to keep up with the common pace of productivity. Employees can no longer stand out so promotions won’t occur or any other type of benefit for going above and beyond the normal standard. Atmospheric tension in open office spaces creates a wall of animosity between coworkers as privacy between one another is lost. Closed office spaces can benefit everyone in office environments. Discretion, privacy, and individuality is meant to be preserved; however, that can not happen in open office spaces.
Companies have learned to deal with this working around these quirks if the employees work can well together, that makes people happy, increasing work flow. But if one person disrupts this flow, by interrupting people’s norms in the workplace, then they will suffer the loss end. Lumbergh seems to be an ignorant and arrogant man who dictates his employee and doesn’t want to be blamed at all. Moreover, Lumbergh asks his employee to come to work on weekend. The atmosphere in the office is getting more intense after Lumbergh announced that Initech is bringing in consultants to increase the efficiency of the company. Peter was very frustrated with everything in the office and he felt that his life even more miserable with each passing day at work. The following day, he decided to come to see a hypnotherapist in order to help him to have more positive outlook on life. Before the hypnotherapist finishes his hypnotic therapy on Peter, he has a heart attack unexpectedly and then dies. However, Peter was still under the influence of hypnosis and fails to come back to his normal state. The next day, Peter sleeps all day long – he actually supposed to come to work – and ignores all calls from his boss. On Monday, Peter comes to the office to have an interview with the consultants. Here, still under the influence of hypnosis, Peter blatantly tells everything he felt about the company. He even tells the interviewers that he only stare at his desk – looks like he is working – for hours to spend his time at work. In the end of the interview, Peter says that actually he is not lazy, but he has a problem with motivation. From the perspective of a management, flexible arrangement would not be as desirable as a structured arrangement since it would require more efforts to control and monitor. In mechanistic structures where the structures are highly formalized and centralized, innovation would decreases as communication often follow a chain of command. However, managers would be able to more effectively control and manage the productivity of their employees as each job has a rigid set of standards and guideline. Managers and the top executive would also be able to make important decisions without having to consult with the lower levels, ensuring that management has complete control over the everyday operation of an organization. On the other hand, a flexible arrangement would be more desirable from an employee 's perspective as it would enable employees to display their creativity not have more freedom in their daily work tasks. Working in a flexible arrangement, such as in a flat structure, employees have reported that they feel satisfied with their job as it has enabled them to obtain self-actualization. Without rigid rules and regulations to follow, employees have the ability to try new strategies and ideas, causing innovation to increase within a company.
