As the first decade of the 21st century lingers on, one constant remains--technology rules the world. New products are released routinely allowing workers to work faster and smarter than ever before. The drive to excel is thrust on students daily and technology holds the key to a teenager’s future. With kids buying more iPods, cell phones, and laptops than ever before, one is driven to ask: “Should schools embrace technology and, perhaps provide each student with a laptop?” Gary Stager, from the Irving Independent School District believes “technology, as a tool, has the ability to drastically change teaching and learning, and when coupled with student laptops [available 24/7], our students will be empowered for their future”. In addition, many people believe that students perform better on standardized tests when every student has a laptop at his/her disposal. A one-to-one laptop program, sponsored by the school, would allow every student to own a laptop computer that would be loaded with productivity software (word processing, presentations, et cetera) and enable students to access the school’s wireless internet. Although technology is expensive, it should be used in high schools because technology plays such a significant role in society, a one to one laptop program should be embraced by all high schools. With a one-to-one laptop program, the days of ripped textbooks, broken bindings, and number documentation would be tasks of the past. If every student owned a laptop, kids would have their entire curriculum at their fingertips and would never have to worry about leaving an assignment or book at school. Although some say reading from a computer distracts from the hands on experience of a book, a tablet (touch screen) lapt... ... middle of paper ... ...a one-to-one laptop program can improve student scores on academic tests and help the student gain more knowledge in the real world. Laptops provide many unique opportunities of learning that simply exceed the benefits of the overhead projector. With a computer, students can gain the personal power to advance their skills in all of their core subject areas. A laptop makes ripped pages and broken bindings a thing of the past. Students’ writing skills improve in addition to collaborative learning. At a glance, the idea may seem expensive; however, there are many funding opportunities available which can offset the cost. If the United States of America is truly set on improving student performance, VCRs and chalkboards need to become a thing of the past. It is time to start with a "clean slate"," erase" all of the old technology, and power up into the 21st century.
I was surprised to learn that students from both the U.S. and abroad agreed that American schools had more technology. I think of Japan and Hong Kong as being very technologically advanced and did not expect to have more than them. Ripley reports that “the United States invests more heavily in technology in classrooms than even high-performing countries.” This result opens an interesting debate of whether technology advances student learning. In my high school, we had a one-for-one policy, meaning each student in grades 9-12 received a district-owned laptop. The laptops did indeed increase student learning, but for reasons other than what the school board wants to think. The laptops provided every student with a means to complete their homework. There were no more excuses of “My printer broke!” or “My Wi-Fi connection was down!” Each student was expected to download the assignment while at school, where the Wi-Fi was guaranteed. Then, the work could be completed at home and turned in during the next class session. The laptops provided accountability for all the students, but did not ‘enhance classroom lessons’, as was the intention. The school board liked to believe that the technology would increase interactivity in classrooms and open new doors for learning, but that interactivity that was discussed in board meetings was nonexistent in practicality. According to a study, schools in the U.S. spend more than 5 billion dollars a year on computers; all computers are meant to be provided to students and teachers. The article, “High Access and Low Use of Technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful.

Tablets are portable computers that use a touchscreen as its primary input device, meaning that both keyboard and mouse are both physically located on the screen. Early Tablets were built to be used with a pen, today however tablets can be used with just one finger or multiple fingers with the support of multi touch input. Tablet have had a positive input on society especially students in school that are looking to get their work done in an engaging way and, not by moving a pen or pencil like it’s been done for decades. Tablets have proven to be the better tool for learning among students.
College is a very challenging experience for a student. Classes consist of note taking, research, essays, lectures, group assignments, etc. Before technology, college students would use libraries for research, notebooks for note taking, letters for communication between the student and the university, and typewriters for typed assignments. Today, we have the possibility to do all of that with one gadget, the computer. The computer, alongside the Internet, has revolutionized the way students study and do assignments for class. Recently, computers have become ultra-portable laptops that could be used during class. Laptop use during class means that the student could compose neat notes, research on the information from the lecture, complete assignments; you can basically do everything with the laptop computer. Using a laptop in class is something one is not used to. During high school, you are not allowed to use any technological gadget during class. In college, you have the possibility to use a gadget that has revolutionized the lives of everyone. It is a privilege to use a laptop during class.
Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system. Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
It is very hard not to realize that technology has overpowered education in many ways. “Technology integration is similar to a tidal wave, growing silently in strength, then falling with an unstoppable roar upon those who paid no attention or showed little interest” (Guhlin, 40). Nowadays, computers are almost considered a necessity in the classroom, and are the main component of technology integration. Computers are being used in more numerous ways, besides only being used for basic word processing. With a simple computer, copious availabilities of technologies can be used in the classroom. “The one thing that is so great about the computer is that it does give a lot of instruction--and you don't need to have hearing to take advantage of it” (Anderson, 12). It’s amazing how one simple screen can provide everlasting opportunity for learning.
“With a computer, you’re interacting with something, not someone” (Stoll 259). In reality, computers bring new ways of communication to school. Whereas with a paper-based system, papers have to be hauled home and back by teachers to grade and make notes on. With a computer based system, feedback can be sent instantly. The important part of this is speed and efficiency.
As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.

The use of computers in school classrooms has evolved throughout the years, and has become revolutionary in changing the way we teach and learn. Our classrooms should no longer be confined to four walls and a few teachers who are considered to be experts in knowledge. Our classrooms need to keep up with a changing society and a new world that is dependent on technology. As students graduate, they need the technological skills needed to thrive in a world in which technology sets the pace. Society expects the school system to produce functional citizens who have the skills to gain profitable employment, and not be a drain on the system.
Andy Carvin states “ internet access in schools isn’t worth a hill of beans if teachers aren’t prepared to take full advantage of technology” (2000). Schools spend a lot of money on computer hardware and software as well as other technologies without realizing that many of their employees are unprepared to include them in their teaching and use them to their advantages. Educators often use technology as a classroom management tool rather than an educational one, allowing computer time as a reward for good behavior (Clark & Gorski, 2001). The problem with this is that students learn to use the computer for games and such because it is their reward instead of using it on their own time for educational purposes. This is teaching them the wrong idea. Margaret Honey, director of the Center for Children and Technology in NYC said it best, “The bottom line is, you don’t just put technology into schools or into homes and expect miracles to happen. The technology is only as good as the program that surrounds it” (Meyer, 2002, p.2).
Why are men and women still treated unequally? Why was sexism such a great problem in the past and continues to be to today? Why are men able to control the lives of women and take their voices away? Why? Women are like men, whether men want to admit it or not. Some men do not feel superior to women, but there is an innumerable amount that do feel the need to dominate. Where this need to dominate and be superior, probably comes from just being who they are: men. They cannot help themselves, and they think of themselves as better than women, smarter than women, more influential than women. Men and women are equals and deserve to have the same rights, because God created us as equals.
There is no doubt that technology has changed the world in which we live. The world has been transformed with new advances in technology. This is why it is so important to educate elementary students on technology education. The use of technology in education provides students with technology literacy, information literacy, capacity for life-long learning and other skills necessary for the 21st century workplace.
