”Books will soon be obsolete in the schools...Scholars will soon be instructed through the eye. It is possible to touch every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture” (Thomas Edison). An idea that was destined for failure has now been made into the key source to get students and teachers more interacted while in a classroom setting. Tablets such as the iPad and the Microsoft surface have made this idea possible, showing students that there is another alternative to the traditional method which would be a printed version of the textbook. Tablets are portable computers that use a touchscreen as its primary input device, meaning that both keyboard and mouse are both physically located on the screen. Early Tablets were built to be used with a pen, today however tablets can be used with just one finger or multiple fingers with the support of multi touch input. Tablet have had a positive input on society especially students in school that are looking to get their work done in an engaging way and, not by moving a pen or pencil like it’s been done for decades. Tablets have proven to be the better tool for learning among students.
Tablets can help improve the way students attain their studies. According to Cam Lincoln “Students who used the iPad version of the textbook scored 20 percent higher on standardized test versus students who learned with traditional textbook”(parag.2).This demonstrates that, students who used the iPad version of the textbook learned more effectively than the students who learned with traditional textbooks. In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Even if teachers decide to take their classes to a computer lab, it can often be hard to get in as schools do not have enough funding to go one-to-one (one device for one student). Once upon a time when computer labs were the latest in school technology, it worked; computers had a limited number of uses so labs worked but that time has long passed. Technology is now a critical part of education, and while schools are doing their best to get more labs, mobile laptop labs, iPad carts, etc.
Today’s world is constantly evolving and technological advances are surfacing it seems like every few weeks. Apple has produced the country’s most popular devices and the question has arose whether or not iPads are effective in the classroom. This research project will thoroughly entail the pros of implementing an iPad in the learning environment. As for my personal take on the debate, I side with modernizing education in order to keep up with technology and to preserve the student’s enjoyable learning environment.
Students can use the tablets to play interactive games about their lesson. Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
Technology has finally produced a positive substitute for the heavy, expensive, and inconvenient textbooks. Using tablets can greatly decrease the amount of storage space needed in classrooms. This will allow for improved organization and freeing up resources that can be better spent enhancing the educational experience. She is working on the Distance Education and Training for K-12 teachers. Shengquan Yu is a professor of Educational Technology, and Dean of the College of Educational Technology. Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system.
The textbooks that we use or check out at school are really out of date. Some of the information we receive through these books are not even relevent anymore. Along with getting more up to date info, the tablets holds more books and information. That way the student doesn’t have to carry mulitple books at one time. The books and information the student gets, they can highlight, and mark and write on the book or the writing with their finger also. For example, some of the books that I have been using just this year are torn, the spins are half off and the pages are ripped out. This way using the new information on the tablets, the teachers or advisors don’t need to worry about fixing the 10 year old books. If students need to learn about information and stats in a math class or important dates in history class, they should be able to learn the newer info. The benefits of tablets are not only restricted to grades K-12 or college. They can also be transferred into real world applications. As seen above in Fig. 1 they expect the amount of tablets in the corporate environment to continue to grow exponentially even after the plateau of tablet sales. Many businesses have already adopted them as cash register alternatives. It is extremely easy and effective for small businesses to use a tablet to take credit card payments. That isn’t all though, as they can be seen in hospitals to help aide during surgery or to keep a database of patient files with them at all times.
