Over the past years, Americans have continued to double or even triple how much they weighed in the past two decades. Nearly two-thirds of Americans have been diagnosed as obese. “Nearly 78 million adults and 13 million children in the United States deal with the health and emotional effects of obesity every day” (American Heart Association). Millions of Americans have suffered from obesity due to portion sizes increasing in size, not getting the sufficient amount of exercise needed daily, and electronics getting in the way of people going outside and doing exercise. Type two diabetes, heart disease, bone joint disease are some of the side effects of being obese. All these reasons support why Americans, over the years, have become more obese. …show more content…

Studies have shown that twenty-eight to thirty percent of children are obese, most of those children have one or more electronics in their room. “Children with one or more electronic devices in the bedroom—TVs, computers, video games and cellphones—were also far more likely to be overweight or obese” (Obesity). The lack of sleep (also associated with electronics) could also be held accountable for the increasing population of children that have become obese. These two thing have caused around thirty percent of America’s new generation to be medically obese. Children that do not have any type of electronic device in their bedroom are less likely to become obese: however, children with one or more electronic devices are more likely to become obese due to the fact that they don't get the sufficient amount of exercise needed. “Researchers found that students with access to one electronic device were 1.47 times as likely to be overweight as kids with no devices in the bedroom. That increased to 2.57 times for kids with three devices, with similar results reported among obese children” (Obesity).
