A huge component of this class was nutrition; I have learned that nutrition should be a top priority in everyone lives. One’s nutrition plays a critical role in their body composition and overall health. There are several components that go into maintaining a healthy diet, and the trends and popular diets are ever-changing, constants are rare when it comes to nutrition. One constant that seems to remain the same, regardless of any new technological advances or scientific studies, is our need of fats, carbohydrates (sugar), and proteins in our diet. This exposition will discuss the 3 macronutrients in detail, emphasizing their function in the body and dietary sources for the macronutrient. First thing first, let’s discuss one of my favorite macronutrients, carbohydrates otherwise known as carbs. Carbs which is essentially sugar comes from starch, fruit, vegetables, milk, meat, sports drinks and any other food that has sugar in it (Hall, 2017). Proteins can be thought of as the tissue builders in our body (Hall, 2017), and vegetarians can still get their daily recommended amount of protein, proving that a vegetarian diet is not a major risk to one’s health. Protein can come from poultry, eggs, fish, nuts, and seeds (2017). Some major functions of protein in our body include structural formation, acid/base and electrolyte balance, enzyme function, energy, immune function, and transport function (Hall, 2017). The wide variety of jobs a protein host in the body is actually pretty extensive and obviously variable.
