My pathway further into my nursing profession is unclear right now. My current goal is to attend a 4-year Nursing School to eventually become a Labor and Delivery Nurse. My acceptance into the LPN program best demonstrates my ability to accomplish my goals. When I learned about the LPN program at out local tech school, I immediately enrolled in the prerequisite course at my high school. Only then did I learn that only High School Seniors and Post-graduates got accepted into the LPN course. Due to my determination I applied anyway and because of my evident passion and work ethic during that first year, I became the youngest person ever accepted into that program since its inception in 1974. At the end of my first year of LPN school I became

In the society we currently live in today, medical careers are a vital factor regarding the well-being of citizens in the United States. Neonatal nurses make up a very small part of this field, but still play a huge role. Our population depends on neonatal nurses, for the reason that they assist newborns, who were just brought into this world, in becoming stable and healthy. Evidently, in order to become a neonatal nurse, a particular education is required. In addition, with this career comes both a number of benefits and burdens. Overall, in our country, even in the world for that matter, neonatal nurses are needed and the demand for them will continue to grow in the future.
Neonatal nursing is a field of nursing designed especially for both newborns and infants up to 28 days old. The term neonatal comes from neo, "new", and natal, "pertaining to birth or origin”. Neonatal nurses are a vital part of the neonatal care team. These are trained professionals who concentrate on ensuring that the newborn infants under their care are able to survive whatever potential life threatening event they encounter. They treat infants that are born with a variety of life threatening issues that include instances of prematurity, congenital birth defects, surgery related problems, cardiac malformations, severe burns, or acute infection. Neonatal care in hospitals was always done by the nursing staff but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until well into 1960s. This was due to the numerous advancements in both medical care training and related technology that allowed for the improved treatment and survival rate of premature babies. According to the March of Dimes, one of every thirteen babies born in the United States annually suffers from low birth weight. This is a leading cause in 65% of infant deaths. Therefore, nurses play a very important role in providing round the clock care for these infants, those born with birth defects or other life threatening illness. In addition, these nurses also tend to healthy babies while their mothers recover from the birthing process. Prior to the advent of this specialized nursing field at risk newborn infants were mostly cared for by obstetricians and midwives who had limited resources to help them survive (Meeks 3).

I will begin my education at Germanna in the fall of 2017 and later transfer to a university to get my bachelors. Pushing myself towards my bachelors can impact my future greatly. Attending Germanna’s nursing program will take about 3 years in total. I have a semester of prerequisites that I have to take before I can even apply to their nursing program. After that semester, there is an application process that everyone applying has to go through. If accepted into the program, I will be attending for two years as a full time student. In that time, I will earn my education and prepare myself for the state test that Virginia provides to all students earning their degree as RNs. After passing the state test and completing my courses at Germanna, I will graduate as a Registered Nurse. During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. Being a Cook Children’s nurse resident would allow me to fulfill my passion and dream of pediatric nursing. I am interested in a nurse residency at Cook Children’s because of its excellent reputation in patient satisfaction, standard of care, and community involvement. A residency at Cook Children’s would allow me to gain more experience and know...

In high school, every career goal test and
A description can never be as vivid as an event that has been experienced. An experience can never be as defining as an event that has left you changed. Under the intensity of childbirth, you're more likely to remember details that would otherwise go unnoticed. All the scenes come together to leave a permanent imprint on the mind's eye.

One of the fundamental principles of midwifery is the relationship that is developed and nurtured between a midwife and the woman she is caring for (Guilliland & Pairman, 2010; Kirkman, 2010; Pairman, 2006 cited in Leap & Pairman, 2010). This relationship is one of partnership. By ‘being with’ and supporting each woman’s independence in autonomy throughout her pregnancy and birth the potential is created for the woman to be empowered and enriched so that she feels confident and self-assured in her abilities as a woman and as a mother (Guilliland & Pairman, 1995; McCourt & Stevens, 2005; Siddiqui 1991; Katz Rothman, 1991 cited in Leap & Pairman, 2010). To do this midwives are required to view the relationship as one based on mutual learning and respect rather than considering themselves as the ‘expert’ (Guilliland & Pairman, 1995; Pairman, 1998 cited in Leap & Pairman, 2010). Relating to this idea of mutual learning and respect in partnership, Guilliland and Pairman (1995 cited in Leap & Pairman, 2010) make an interesting point, stating that if the goal of midwifery is to promote autonomy for women than the concept of advocacy in maternity care should be questioned. Also, Leap and Pairman (2010) argue that for a woman to feel empowered she should be advocating for herself. In most situations, the majority of women are capable of doing this, particularly in relationships where the midwife has encouraged the woman to access information and communicate her desires (Leap & Pairman, 2010). Developing a partnership relationship in which the midwife values the woman’s expertise is a skill that requires the midwife to be secure and confident in herself as both a woman and a midwife (Kirkham, 2000 cited in Leap & Pairman, 2010) as she m...
