Wow, I can't believe that this course is almost done; five weeks went by rather quickly. I feel elated to know that this course is nearly done. Not to sound overconfident; however, I believe I did pretty well taking into account that I have to balance school, work, and parenting duties. Also, this being the beginning of the school year, I have yet to miss any of my children’s school activities. However, since the start of this program, I now have a few concerns and believe my plans after graduation have change. Before enrolling in this course, I had the opportunity to complete some Health Care Administration (PUBA) upper division courses at University of Hawaii (UH) at West Oahu. Like this class, PUBA online courses involved weekly discussions …show more content…
Unlike any other traditional course, which runs for the whole semester, each nursing course is only about five weeks long (with the exemption of NURS 460 and 460L). That’s lots of information to absorb in such a short period. Taking these courses is very similar to taking summer courses with each course starting right after the other ends. However, unlike the summer session that only last for about ten weeks, this program runs for about nine months (not counting NURS 301 and 306). Also, after the start of NURS 363, there won’t be any break in between courses until mid-August, after the completion of NURS 453. This cohort program is unlike the previous groups where they had a break midway through the program. I hope my fellow colleagues and I will be able to hold on for nine straight months of intense schoolwork, along with our family and work responsibilities. In addition, three of these courses, NURS 460, 460L and 340 will run concurrently at some point. Trying to complete these three courses along with work and parental responsibilities (and any social life – if there is going to be any) is going to be a great challenge. Maybe for the next cohort group, since NURS 340 is an elective course, the nursing program should consider conducting this class after the NURS 431 course, which ends at the beginning of October. There will be enough time to …show more content…
Before starting this quest just over two years ago, I had my transcript evaluated and back then, two nursing courses were offered as elective courses as a bridge to help satisfy the five writing intensive course requirements and help fulfill any additional upper division graduation requirements. In addition, during the informational briefing, just before the start of this cohort, the nursing elective was promoted as electives to fulfill same program’s graduation requirements. However, after speaking with Ms. Chagami, Nursing Advisor, I am saddened to learn that I am now required to take these additional classes, NURS 340 and 431, which means an extra $2800 for books and tuition costs. Furthermore, our two vehicles, which are 16 and 19 years old, are finally nearing the end of their service life thus I (we) may need to purchase one or two vehicles very soon. Thereby, my (our) immediate goal has changed to paying off the remaining student loan that my wife has accrued as a student in the third cohort, try not to incur any additional student loan or debt and save some money for the purchase of a car or two. Furthermore, soon after graduation from this program (God willing and with the help of my family), my wife and I will also need to prepare in financially helping our children with their plans of attending college in the fall of 2018. I believed that the college cost for pharmaceutical and ophthalmologist program is
As a new nurse that was approaching my first anniversary of employment, I made the very tough decision to return to school to obtain my BSN. I began the RN-BSN program with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) in August of 2015. My life was already very busy, along with having two children, a husband, and reentering the workforce in a new field, I decided that taking one course at a time would work best for my busy schedule. My focus was to take as many classes as possible, without breaks by following the start dates with the UTA program. There were pre-requisite classes from other schools that I overlapped with the RN-BSN classes because I wanted to complete the program as quickly as possible.
I will begin my education at Germanna in the fall of 2017 and later transfer to a university to get my bachelors. Pushing myself towards my bachelors can impact my future greatly. Attending Germanna’s nursing program will take about 3 years in total. I have a semester of prerequisites that I have to take before I can even apply to their nursing program. After that semester, there is an application process that everyone applying has to go through. If accepted into the program, I will be attending for two years as a full time student. In that time, I will earn my education and prepare myself for the state test that Virginia provides to all students earning their degree as RNs. After passing the state test and completing my courses at Germanna, I will graduate as a Registered Nurse. In my last year of Germanna’s program, I will have options to specialize in a field of nursing. In that time, I will learn everything and anything about becoming a great labor and delivery
My journey to finally realizing of becoming a student in this RN Executive Program has been a long journey filled with excitement and disappointing periods. I 've started this quest in the Summer of 2015 and here I am, two years later, starting my first class in the program, Nursing 301.
Dr. Reid, Thank you for getting back with me. Which classes are you requesting that I retake and which ones would transfer as completed? I have your ADN program that show your classes, but they are not listed the same as UT, so I'm not sure of what your requesting that I retake. I did really well in all of my other classes with clinicals and made A's and B's in everything except MedSurg 1 and 2, and it wasn't until MS1 that I fell behind. In MS1, I was put with a charge nurse overnight and she only had 1 pt, the rest of the time I stayed busy helping other nurses and charting for the new admin pt's, but I received good evaluations in MS1 and passed the class.
The goal of my learning plan for this semester is to develop skills in health education specific to adolescents. I chose this as my learning goal because my placement this semester at Sunnybrook Hospital, Injury Prevention Program, gives me an opportunity to provide health education to high school students every Tuesday at out P.A.R.T.Y. Program so I thought I should use this opportunity to develop my and improve my nursing skills in this area. As well as good health education skills to adolescents can benefit the students by proving them a motivating learning environment and better learning outcomes. I hope they can enjoy my teaching and absorb the information and use them in the future. I have considered many factors in the process of developing my learning plan such as the nursing standards of health promotion, prevention and health protection, professional relationships, capacity building etc… I brainstormed possible topics such as possible topics that are related to injury prevention itself for example, concussion prevention or preventing sports related injuries. I also thought about doing topics that are relevant specifically to the P.A.R.T.Y. Program such as teenage suicide and prevention or distracted driving. After assessing my placement and the clients which in this case are the students, I have recognized that one of the program’s goals is to educate the students about injuries and injury prevention. I also found that our clients had a lot of potential in learning about this subject which can greatly benefit their lives and influence change in their behaviour to increase control of their own health and make better choices. In terms of my personal needs, I felt that I had room for improvement in terms of my le...
“The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival” (Aristotle, n.d.)
The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. It also helps me to progress to a stable job that is solely concentrated on making a positive difference in someone’s life. For this reason, I would feel privileged to be accepted on to this course.
To improve my understanding of maintaining my capability for practice as a RN, I set a goal to learn in depth from my classes, related units, and through interacting with my friends and tutors. There were many setbacks on the way, but as I became more acquainted with the matter I began understanding better. In this reflection I’ll use Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) to address my experiences as a student nurse in fulfilling the maintenance and capability for practice. Description Through tutorials, lectures and simulation classes every semester, our practice is enhanced and maintained so that the skills and knowledge we learnt is always nurtured while new ones are gained.
Reflective Practice is a continuous action that directly affects anyone who is a practitioner. Jasper (2006, p. 53) stated that the benefits to the profession are the development of the nursing knowledge base and the recognition that nurses are contributing to both patient care and improved practice. Further, Jasper (2006, p. 43) explains that Reflective Practice is the foundation upon which reflection and reflective learning are based.
I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
In this reflective essay, I will be using the Driscoll’s model of reflection to talk about how my knowledge of quality nursing care has improved since the commencement of this module. Quality nursing care has helped me develop various nursing strategies that will guide me in my first placement and throughout my career in nursing. Furthermore, it has taught me about communicating effectively with patients, I have learnt about verbal communication such as paraphrasing when communicating with patients to ensure that what said is properly understood. I have learnt not to make assumptions about patients and putting them in the middle of their care, taking into account their preferences.
Reflecting back, this program has enriched my professional career, knowledge, and perspective of nursing in various ways. I believe I have developed advanced critical thinking and analytical skills, high EI based on learned knowledge, flexibility to accept change, and rational reasoning/knowledge to understand EBP and nursing research. The program offered me more than I had expected, in terms of knowledge, evaluation, analysis, synthesis, competency, and creativity. Each course and its innovative learning style (e.g., voice thread, youseeu, journal club, etc.) challenged, empowered, and motivated me to perform better, aim higher, and excel. Upon graduation, I intend to take a minimum six month break to enjoy quality family time and social life before embarking on a master
The interdisciplinary course is a core requirement in the after-degree nursing program as it incorporates the principles of self-directed learning and promotes critical thinking, which is an essential element in nursing practice. As a final year nursing student, I believe that knowledge from this course will enhance my ability to provide patient-centered care.
