As a young adult, I was certain that nursing was the right career path for me, as I was continuously exposed to the parameters of the profession, within the confines of my home, through the constant care of my family. As the first child of eight children, I was most times entrusted with the safety and protection of my younger siblings. This responsibility meant that I had to be accustomed to certain care taking strategies, thus giving me the opportunity to closely watch and follow my mother as she carried her motherly duties, which includes days in which a family member was invalid. As a young child, I felt like this extra care showed by my mom was unfair to the rest of the children. However, I have now realized that it is of great importance that a nurse is sensitive, attentive and caring to people in vulnerable positions, while maintaining a calm demeanor. Compassion is important in the field of nursing as a compassionate nurse can gain the trust and respect of her patients; this is of great importance as a calm and hospitable environment could make a healing process easier and faster for a patient. A diligent nurse is one that is always ready to go the extra mile when in line of duty. Nursing is a career path that is basically responsible for people’s lives and safety, and so, one would have to deal with a lot of unexpected circumstances, and so it is important that diligence is part of ones’ character, in order to ensure that they do not give up easily. As a nurse, diligence can be upheld by being patient, flexible and maintaining integrity when unexpected situation
