Scholarship is a concept that can mean many different things to many different people. As nursing students, scholarship is a concept that we began developing before we started our formal nursing education, will continue to hone during nursing school, and will utilize every day as professional nurses. Scholarship is not something that comes from a singular source, but rather something that is the product of many different experiences, ideas, and types of knowledge. For nurses, it is the synthesis of knowledge from liberal education, knowledge from a variety of disciplines, and the integration of ways of knowing and thinking in nursing that promote scholarship, which in turn leads to the promotion of safe, quality patient care.

Carper identifies four fundamental patterns of knowing that contribute to the structure of nursing knowledge and the promotion of safe, quality patient care, including empirics, esthetics, personal knowledge, and ethics (1978). According to Carper, empirical knowledge is knowledge of the science behind nursing practice (1978). With empirical knowledge, a nurse relies on the scientific facts she has collected throughout her years of education and experience and applies them to patient care in order to provide the best care possible. Knowledge of esthetics, according to Carper, is knowledge of the art of nursing (1978). Esthetic knowledge allows the nurse to rely on her perceptions and intuitions about what a patient really needs to creatively design and implement the types of care that will be the most effective and satisfying for her patient (Carper, 1978). The third way of knowing, personal knowledge, involves knowing, recognizing, and utilizing the role the individual self plays in nursing practice (Carper, 1978). Carper introduces the idea of therapeutic use of self, in which the nurse sees the patient as more than just an object that needs tending to and instead as another human being to form a relationship with (1978). Personal knowledge drives the nurse to think of how she would want to be treated if the roles were reversed, and motivates the nurse to engage the patient in every aspect of their care so they receive quality care that is tailored to their specific needs. The last way of knowing, ethical knowledge, is defined by Carper as encompassing a nurse’s sense of the right versus the wrong thing to do in a given patient situation (1978). Scholarship, leadership, character, and service are four attributes that define an excellent student. Being in high school, it’s difficult at times to be a leader, show your character, and be involved with voluntary services while being focused on scholarship, but I have managed to do all four numerous times. The fundamental patterns of knowledge were first identified by Barbara Carper (1978), and included empirical, personal, ethical, and aesthetic knowing. According to Zander (2007), Carper sought to develop a holistic, individualistic, therapeutic model of practice which could be utilized to structure nursing education, and evaluate nursing practice. The addition of emancipatory knowing by Chinn and Kramer followed in 2008. These patterns of knowledge have shown to be very beneficial, if not crucial to the nursing profession. The article was complicated, but it helped address the learning patterns and what a nurse needs to know in their practice to better themselves and provide the best care for a patient. By acknowledging the patient as a person, applying science based practice, using artful skills, and ethically providing care to a patient, the nurse extends their patterns of knowing and forms their knowledge base.
Nursing excellence is defined in various ways. I believe that nursing excellence is demonstrated when nurses are involved in promoting holistic patient centered care, quality and innovation, education, evidence-based practice, and nursing research. Nursing organizations plays a pivotal role in promoting nursing excellence. Nursing is a medical profession that involves the care and management of patients majorly in the hospital setting. This paper seeks to illustrate the fact that nursing is both a science and an art. Nursing is a science because it involves evidence based practice, education of the public, lifelong learning for the nurse and administrative roles that are allocated to the nurses. Nursing is also an art because nurses depend on intuition, have the capacity to promote positive change, are understanding and culturally sensitive.
I believe that nursing is a fulfilling career and I wanted to go into a career where I could help other people. Nursing is a career that is under praised and needs to be recognized more as an outstanding occupation. My mom is a nurse and she always tells me the situations that she runs into and I find everything she does interesting. Nurses play an important role in the lives of the patients and I can comfort somebody when needed. My mom always told me growing up that I need to have a job where I don’t just sit behind desk and have no interactions. My mom said I have to interact with people and talk to others because that’s how I will make it far in life. I like to be surrounded by other people and work with other people. I like the idea of being able to speak to other people and get different perspectives for different situations. I need a dynamic environment. Nursing calls for a dynamic environment. I need to be moving around and conversing with other people.
Nurses use evidence based practice and research to develop knowledge needed to practice in the nursing profession. Nurses use practical knowledge and theoretical knowledge in the many roles that nurses perform. As a provider of care and manager of care, nurses should use evidence based practice, research, and theoretical knowledge to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient. Lifelong education in nursing is necessary to keep up with the changes in nursing practice and to reinforce ethical knowledge and the core values that nurses use in their everyday practice. My interest in nursing began at age 18 at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut where I was trained as a Certified Care Partner, then as a Phlebotomist, followed by a two year surgical floor assignment and a one year burn unit stint.
In my future career I would want to go into the medical field. This way I could be able to help people in the community and also put a smile on families faces. I want to be of service and give back to the people that have helped me. For my project I really wanted to see what a paramedic does on a day to day basis. I really like the subject because I just love the medical field in general.
The art of nursing is defined as being mindful of what the patient needs emotionally and physically. In order to fully practice the true art of nursing, one must have compassion, a caring attitude, and good communication skills (Palos, 2014). Another definition of the art of nursing is having a personal connection between the nurse and the patient (Kostovich & Clementi, 2014). My personal interpretation of the art of nursing is to be aware of the patient’s specific needs; being physically present when they need you; respecting the patient and the family; and being gentle when delivering nursing care. The science of nursing on the other hand is having the knowledge, skill, critical thinking and evidence-based practice integrated with nursing practice (Palos, 2014). With this concept, a nurse must have a good understanding of various types of diseases and be able to identify the symptoms associated with it. Medicine is an important part of science. Knowledge about the different drugs and knowing how to safely administer them are crucial in nursing care. Performing medical procedures and updating current nursing skills according to new evidence-based research is critical to achieve best patient outcome. I, Virginia Harrell, have learned a great deal during my internship. While completing my Master degree at South University in the mental health counseling program. I am currently working in the field as a Mental Health Professional, but I wanted to gain more experience in the therapist/counseling field. I am in the process of completing an internship at the Team Wellness Center. Working in the therapist role allowed me to get hands on experience in completing psychosocial an asking question about the client family history by doing this it confirmed that this is the field I am interested in pursuing.
