It was a pleasure and after interviewing with you, I am confident that I can make a positive contribution to the surgical nursing team as I am very enthusiastic about the opportunity to start my nursing career at Maimonides.

I interviewed Nurse Manager, Edwina McCray in her office at Duke University Medical Pavilion. Mrs. McCray has a BA in Business Administration and her second degree is in nursing. She has a BSN and Masters in Nursing. She also is a certified National Nurse Leader. She manages 8 West unit, which is part of the Neuroscience team. Neurosurgery and Neurology patients are cared for on this 32 bed tower unit. The majority of the population served on her unit is acute brain tumors, patients that need or will have cranial surgery and vascular surgery patients. The Mission of Duke University Hospital is, “We put the person who needs our care at the center of everything we do”, (E. McCray, personal communication, October 7, 2016).
I have had the privilege to work with an incredible nurse leader over the past two years. This particular nurse leader shares my passion for population health and case management for the support of patients in their homes and keeping patients safe and healthy. The purpose of this interview was to obtain further knowledge about the role desired by the interviewer. By attaining information from a practicing Master’s prepared nurse, the interviewer will develop a deeper understanding of the career advancement and potential opportunities that are available in the local community.
Advanced practice registered nurses play a significant part in extending access to health care by providing primary care and specialty care services to clients. Advanced practices registered are mentors, educators, researchers, and administrators. According to Health Resources and Services Administration, “Ninety-six percent of the NP workforce reported being in clinical practice, providing direct patient care” (Health Resources and Services Administration 2016). Furthermore, “Nearly three percentages were in faculty positions and approximately one percent was in administrative positions”(Health Resources and Services Administration 2016).
This piece of work will be based on the pre-assessment process that patients go through on arrival to an endoscopy unit in which I was placed in during my second year studying Adult diploma Nursing. I will explore one patient’s holistic needs, identifying the priorities of care that the patient requires; I will then highlight a particular priority and give a rational behind this. During an admission I completed under the supervision of my mentor I was pre-assessing a 37 year old lady who had arrived to the unit for an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. During the pre-assessment it was important that a holistic assessment is performed as every patient is an individual with unique care needs as the patient outline in this piece of work has learning disabilities it was imperative to identify any barriers with communication (Nursing standards 2006).
For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. In the interview you will see the perspective of Emily’s endeavors after college and insight for future nurses or nursing students.
When it comes to switching shifts, nurses usually give a quick report on the patient, so the oncoming nurse knows what is going on with the patients. Sometimes nurses are rushing through the report, skipping through vital information, which can cause harm in our patients. We must have a standard hand off report each nurse must follow to provide patient safety and satisfaction.
I hope to impact this professional with my knowledge and expertise. I am now in school again to further my knowledge of this profession. It may seem old for some. However, for me learning has no age and boundaries as I continued to gain more knowledge and perhaps someday I can be a mentor for my peers. I hope to someday work In Risk management where I can continue to fight and argue the rights of my patients and peers whom all deserve a sense of dignity and self-worth. My contribution to this profession includes providing and promoting care with a holistic approach that is inclusive of the mind, body, spiritual belief practices because the patients I see as being more than just another patient in need of my care. The patients are like you and I and perhaps wants the same as I want for them. I’m sure with my great sense of enthusiasm that I may accomplish something here because my day will never end until I make an unmistakable stamp on a profession I always wanted to practice since that little girl whose heart was touched by the many caring professionals that provided care to my mom. Saying that you are a registered nurse is a broad statement. Registered nursing is a job that has many aspects. Registered nurses work in many different settings and they carry out many different routines. As a registered nurse you could be exposed to many different opportunities. My goal is to be a registered nurse but, I need to learn a lot. Becoming a being a registered nurse requires a lot of hard work and effort but, if I focus on my goal I will be able to achieve it.
I request to be selected into the AMEDD Enlisted Commissioning Program; I should be considered as a candidate due to my dedication in caring for the ill and wounded soldiers throughout my military career. As a medical provider, I have the experience and medical skills that I acquired as a Combat Medic, Flight Paramedic and through my work as a civilian paramedic, all which are an essential complement to the medical knowledge that I attained through my Bachelor in Health Sciences. It is this well rounded medical understanding that gives me the tools and the confidence to succeed in the AECP. The rigor and dedication needed to excel in a Nursing program is something that I have already experienced, I am ready to embrace a challenging Nursing program, I will be dedicated to an Army Nursing career and providing the selfless service required as an Army Nurse, in order to take care of the men and women that protect our Nation. I will reflect the integrity and values which are embedded in the Army Medical Service Corps.

I would like to first start off by thanking all of the professional member of your staff that has assisted me with obtaining treatment for mental health. The decision to seek mental health with Portsmouth Naval Hospital and its branch clinics was not an simple decision to make. Moreover, this decision was personally difficult for myself because of the “stigma” that is placed on mental illnesses and my reluctance to being labeled as having any sort of mental illness within my military medical record. However, I felt
I wanted to write you a letter personally because you mean so much to me. I wanted to sincerely tell you how much I adore you as a nurse. I will never forget our days at East together when you precepted me (our severely preeclamptic patient who had the arm that “kept going like this”) and my face when her BP read 200/120! I also can’t forget your face when I came out shocked!
An annual RN job evaluation can be difficult for a new nurse manager. She is obligated to display the RN performance over the twelve months and compare it to certain standards (Sullivan, 2013). As nurse involve in a diversity of job related activities the goal of a performance appraisal is to held nursing practice development, job knowledge and skills, quality of work, core competency, strengths, weakness, and behavior performance. The performance evaluate tool is considered precisely to appraise the practice of nurses in each nursing function and task. Practice competencies must be evaluated in the practice setting by direct observation at the aspect of care (Sullivan, 2013).

1) Model the way: As mentioned above, I found the issue of inadequate knowledge regarding ICU medicine among the new nurses. Therefore, I raised the voice regarding the proper education, orientation and supervision to the new nurses until they can do work independently. Model the way is about changing the self to change the environment, it is about believing on what we do (Hutchinson and Jackson, 2012, pp.25). Therefore, I had faith on myself that change is necessary and I can change the situation by believing in myself. So, I started to change my opinion and strongly stand to provide training and education program for the nurses.
