Action Plan
Pretty sure no one has ever said being a nurse is easy. I started my journey to becoming a nurse 24 years ago. My first insight to my future was given to me by my grandmother. I visited her in the hospital several times and noticed how her nurses really cared for her and seemed to love their job. That was all it took for me. I enrolled in a nursing assistant course and within three months I was a certified nursing assistant (CNA). I could never have imagined what the next 24 years would look like, but I am forever grateful to my grandma. In this paper I will attempt to clarify my need to reach my goal of becoming a registered nurse (RN).

I have had more opportunities to complete certain outcomes and have included my top four with evidence of competency. My first learning outcome is incorporating knowledge and methods of a variety of disciplines to inform decision making for a chronically ill patient (#1). My clinical experience has given me several opportunities to work alongside of the RN and chronically ill patients. I have been able to work with respiratory therapists in deciding what breathing apparatus is most beneficial for my patient. An in-depth monitoring session of my patient that was having an acute exacerbation led to a great care team discussion and implementation of the appropriate oxygen delivery device that benefited my patient. It was interesting to contribute to a patient that was unable to speak but could use body language to effectively communicate. I also appreciated the respect that was shown to me by the resident, therapist, and RN. It made me feel like an integral part of the care team with professional communication and attitude shown by everyone
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. Transitioning from academic nursing student to Registered Nurse/New Graduate Nurse (NGN) within the healthcare environment is a challenging task for many NGNs. They may encounter a number of challenges, such as the following: transition shock, professional isolation, lack of clinical experience, stress, lack of a support network and cultural incompetence. At the end, this essay will discuss the rationale for developing my two most important goals for the next twelve months. I presume the transition from academic nursing student to Graduate Nurse will be challenging and rewarding. In their findings, the researchers Doody, Tuohy & Deasy (2012) stated that for a successful transition NGNs need to be competent in a range of domains: interpersonal skills, managing workloads, providing health information, communication, and prioritising care delivery.
It is important that students have the ability of being competent in a clinical setting. To be deemed competent in skills according to nursing regulations and requirements. This is a challenging factor for many students, as they enter transition period. This is due to students feel they do not have the desired clinical competency that promotes the skills and authorities of a registered nurse (Harsin, Soroor & Soodabeh, 2012). Clinical research studies have found that students do have the required expected levels of knowledge, attitude and behaviour’s. However, the range of practical skills aren’t sufficient for the range of practice settings (Evans, 2008). This research has also found that other evidenced based studies found that competency in nursing skills is still lacking (Evans, 2008). When thinking of a career I would enjoy, I kept my interests and hobbies in mind. Through life I have developed an interest for helping people, and a career as a Nurse Practitioner will allow me to do so. From going to mission trips and assisting children to lending a hand at the local nursing homes, I knew a career in the medical field was where I needed to be. To begin my research about the career of a Nurse Practitioner, I looked for information on the Choices 360 website. Then I continued my research to the Nurse.org website. Finally, to conclude my inspection of the career, I interviewed Daniel Eddings who is currently attending school to become a Nurse Practitioner. Everyday in this world, elderly, adults, teens or children become ill or get into accidents and need medical attention. Whether these elderly, adults, teens or children are taken to a hospital, pediatrician, specialist, or clinic, a doctor and a nurse will tend to them. The nurse plays a role that is just as important as the doctor. Nurses work very closely with the families as part of the caring process. Every member of the family plays a role in different ways. The nurses are there to help the patient as well as the family step through the illness or injury. They provide information for the prevention of future illness and injury, and help to comfort the patient and his/her family. It is vital that a nurse understands that to be a nurse, you need a certain personality and understanding of the field.
Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.

My journey to finally realizing of becoming a student in this RN Executive Program has been a long journey filled with excitement and disappointing periods. I 've started this quest in the Summer of 2015 and here I am, two years later, starting my first class in the program, Nursing 301.
There is only so much an individual can learn from a textbook or classroom setting when it comes to nursing. Although clinical practicums are mandatory with any nursing program one can only retain so much in such a short timeframe. Student nurses mostly focus on completing their care plans and any other mandatory assignment related to their clinical experience. With that being said new graduates become novice nurses on the level of clinical practice. In the near future my goal is to further my studies; in the nursing field as a Registered nurse. Personally, my main objectives to become a Registered nurse are, to help save the lives of other, accomplishing my goal, and living life more independently. These are the qualities that would best describe personality: enthusiastic, loving, caring, compassionate, honest, and a cheerful individual. I grow up to have deep passionate love for people, especially those that are unable to help themselves on a daily basis. I always vision myself attending to someone’s rescue; that is in danger or in critical condition. What I have noticed from a long time ago; is that the nursing industry is one out of many that devotes their time, patient, and input hard work and effort to help meet the need of others and make a difference.
Why I want to be a nurse? I have asked myself this question numerous times, and have come up with a variety of answers. I think that being a nurse just embodies the characteristics that I have innately had and characterizes the person I am now. Nursing is more than a profession to me; it encompasses my life in every aspect. Nursing challenges me, nothing is ever exactly the same each day. There are so many opportunities in nursing and so many ways to challenge myself and learn new things.
Adult Nursing is a very rewarding career which provides endless opportunities. I would describe myself as a caring and compassionate person. I believe I possess these qualities naturally. I am compelled to put other people’s needs before my own. I can contribute my personal qualities to this course of being dedicated and determined into committing myself to this 3 year course and excelling academically. Personally, caring for my mother with high blood pressure made me interested in the world of medicine. This long term sickness inspired me to gain more experience outside of the home and volunteer which confirmed that this was the right course for me. First, I would like to start by stating that my expectation of a nurse is that he or she must be a good communicator, emotionally strong, empathetic, patient and calm, pay attention to detail and have good physical endurance. I feel that I possess these qualities which would make me very successful as nurse in the future. I have dream about being a nurse since I was a little girl and as a young adult, I still have the desire to be a nurse so I can help others.
