A good nurse leader is one who communicates clearly, leads by example, creates relationships with team members, sets the goals and a vision for the team, and has the ability to step up at the time of crisis. Nurse leaders who possess these traits inspire trust and in turn have high functioning teams (Linton & Farrell, 2009).
A nurse leader who leads an effective team has the ability to communicate clearly the goals and vision for the team. There is usually a theme of trust and mutual respect among the team members and for the leader. The leader is a role-model who encourages and motivates team members toward a common goal (Giltinane, 2013). I was fortunate to be part of a team that was led by such a leader. Our goal was to develop a VTE order set, nursing and provider documentation, and patient education in a 12-week time frame. The leader carefully selected the right people for the team based on our skill-sets. Clearly describe the tasks, timeline, and goals. At the end of each meeting the leader recapped the meeting discussion, and clearly assigned tasked. The leader was very respectful, but spoke up when the team got off track. This type of leader is more reactive and is driven to look good to upper management or at fixing issue of the day. They usually are not trusted by the team members and the team does not respect the leader (Giltinane, 2013). I worked on a team who had a nurse leader who was very disrespectful to the team. There always seemed to be conflict over working extra shits and the schedule. If you were asked to work overtime and said yes, there was no problem. But, if you said no, the nurse leader would give you the worst assignments and schedule the following
