The most common would be positional power in which a manager’s power is derived from their position in the organizations hierarchy. If the CEO tells the followers what to do it will be done without question out of respect for the power the CEO has over the organization and followers but if it’s someone lower in the hierarchy, the followers may not be as willing to do as they are asked. Another source of power would be charismatic power in which a manager’s personal qualities have a way of influencing follower either by a sense of loyalty they inspire or a history of having good insight into situations that have occurred in the past. The stimulation we had to do for class focused on a piece of land in Cleveland OH that once belonged to a nuclear factory. One of the most well known abusers of power from a person in authority is President Richard Milhous Nixon.
All people have power, some people are just more powerful than others. Having power is the ability to create change. Examples of power being used wrongly is during the French revolution, and the residential school crisis. During the French revolution, two examples were shown of people abusing their power. King Louie XVI raised taxes so that he could buy things that he and his wife Marie Antoinette wanted, and took away rights from the third estate. In the residential schools crisis, the teachers, priests and nuns had power over the students and abused the students in different ways. Superior people take away the rights from those who are below them, but they end up corrupt.
Leadership is definitely about power and an effective leader is able to utilize both types of powers rather than relying on one or the other. Formal power can be used by leadership to remove obstacles or roadblocks faced by employees and to make both hard and easy decisions regarding the organization. Inspiration, influence, trust, and loyalty are all elements that create a high performing and content staff and all these elements are related to the use of informal power. It is important for an effective leader to create a balance between both kinds of power in order to effectively motivate and influence their staff using power.
Derek Sivers gave a brief TED talk entitled “How to start a movement” that is a great example of how important followers are and how they make or break a leader. In his presentation, he discusses the importance of the first follower in launching a movement. The premise is that while a leader may have the courage to stand alone it is the first follower that attracts others to join the organization and stand behind a leader. Followers typically have less authority and influence than their boss does. Followership, however, relates to the role those followers have in supporting the boss and the organization. Interestingly, while not everyone is a leader, every leader is a follower and answerable to someone whether that is a superior officer, a board of directors, or in the case of the United States President, the American people. Power is defined in the course study notes as the “ability of individuals or groups to get what they want despite the opposition”. Power is derived from a variety of sources including knowledge, experience and environmental uncertainties (Denhardt et al, 2001). It is also important to recognize that power is specific to each situation. Individuals or groups that may be entirely powerful in one situation may find themselves with little or no power in another. The county Registrar of Voters, who is my boss, is a perfect example. In running the local elections office, she can exercise the ultimate power. However, in a situation where she attempted to get the county selected for a desirable, statewide pilot project, she was powerless, completely at the mercy of the Secretary of State. Power is difficult to measure and even to recognize, yet it plays a major role in explaining authority. In organizations, power is most likely exercised in situations where “the stakes are high, resources are limited, and goals and processes are unclear” (Denhardt et al, 2001). The absence of power in organizations forces us to rely on soley hierarchical authority.

Followership is an important concept for leaders to understand because without a solid base of followers, a leader is nothing. Followers are people who support and obey the wishes of a leader. Many organization have structures level of leadership. The person in leadership transforms the employees by inspiring them to follow the vision set by the organization. How do great leaders do this? By the use of power and authority. Leaders influence other with use of power. Authority gives the leader the right exert this power. Both leadership and authority is linked to power but in order to operate effectively; the use of power must be understood.
In such organizations it is common for leaders to provide direction without concern for subordinates disagreeing or providing negative feedback. A second behavior which often leads to exploitation is consolidation of information. When a few select personnel in a firm have restricted access to valuable information, a toxic leader can leverage this situation to great effect. Information control can be used to enact isolation for dissenters or to reward those who support the leader. Toxic leaders can even use information to foment distrust among sections of the business preventing them from being galvanized in opposition (Wilson-Starks, 2003).
Power is the capacity or the ability for one to influence the behaviors of others in any given organization. In a business setting, those in control of the organization will always give instructions and directives to those in lower ranks when running of the business. Power is always accompanied with authority, control or even commands. Leadership is the process where by a person influences others to achieve certain objective and goals of a business and then guides the firm in a way that makes it more unified and comprehensible. Leaders directly affect the performance of any firm and good leaders are born and not made. There are leadership styles and leadership theories which are very vital in leadership of the organizations for they affect its success.
