This fall I will be attending Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. I spent three weeks during the summer before my senior year taking a statistics course on campus. I fell in love with the facilities, the location, the quality of my education, and the amazing hidden dining hall in the business building. I am planning to double major in economics and statistics, with a possible minor in Chinese. My future career goal is to become an actuary. In order to attain this goal I must complete my undergraduate education, as well as pass the additional actuarial exams. This is one of the areas I would put the scholarship money to use. There are several costs that go into taking these exams, including paying for a proctor and study materials. …show more content…
I hold officer positions in Chinese Club, Club Y.E.S., and BPA. As an officer, I am in charge of organizing events, communicating with members, as well as leading monthly meetings. Club Y.E.S. and NHS are committed to providing volunteer service to my school and community. I regularly volunteer at many schools in my district with events such as carnivals and book sales. As a member of BPA I have advanced to the national level in three events, and place fourth place in Interview Skills my junior year. My junior year was my first year participating in BPA, and I quickly showed leadership and dedication to my events and the rest of my …show more content…
I have already connected with different volunteer groups on Northwestern's campus in order to find ways to serve. These ways include continuing to serve through dance and music. This is another way I would use the scholarship money. I want to continue to give back by volunteering to play violin and dance at nursing homes and different events throughout my community. I have many connections in Minnesota where I can continue to provide the art of dance to the public after graduation. I would use the money in order to continue to take dance and violin lessons so that I can present the highest quality of art. Another goal of mine is to continue teaching dance; however, I would like to reach those who are in low income areas where there are no dance
Last summer I volunteered at a local hospital for a total of 136 hours. At the end of the summer I received an honorable mention award for being a dedicated volunteer who is highly respected around the hospital. Furthermore, I've been a committed volunteer during this school year. I have also been an active member of my school's HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) chapter; this March I will be competing in a medical terminology competition against members of other HOSA chapters across the state. Additionally, I am a devoted member of my school's academic decathlon team. Finally, I have been a member of CSF (California Scholarship Federation) for the past two years.
In high school I was involved in 3 clubs, 3 varsity sports, and did a least 40 hours of community service through National Honors Society and National Technical Honors Society. I participated in National Technical Honors Society and Health Occupations Students of America(HOSA) through Lapeer County Education and Technical center, and participated in athletics at Imlay City high school. During my high school career I played varsity volleyball for two years, varsity basketball for one year, and varsity soccer for four years, but I jumped back and forth from junior varsity to varsity my freshman year. Also, while being apart of HOSA I was a junior representative my junior year of high school, and I am Vice-President my senior year. And I also mentor our middle school chapter of HOSA and help them to accomplish all of their competitive events.
The AMGEN Summer Scholars research experience will contribute to my plans to become a M.D./Ph.D. candidate, and ultimately an Oncologist, by helping me develop critical and independent thinking as well as creative skills as they relate to the field of medicine. It will also help me develop a more thorough understanding of biological concepts, how they directly apply to medical treatment, and the ways in which biotechnology fuses multiple fields of science to create technologies to care for others. The opportunity to assist in creation of the technologies that will be used on my future patients will ultimately improve my ability to treat their illnesses in adaptive ways. The opportunity I would have to read, interpret, and be a part of creating
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. I know of students—many friends and acquaintances of mine included—that have the most sure-fire, inspirational stories that align with their desire to become doctors, surgeons, physician assistants, etc. They always seemed to have a story that emphasized their desire to “give back” what they have received from the medical community. Because of that, ever since the beginning of high school, I have been trying to find an extraordinary reason, a purpose for my medical pursuits. Perhaps I could justify my passion for
I am involved in several clubs, such as Spanish club and HOSA, although I do not hold office in any of them, I try to serve as a leader and to use my intelligence to help the school. As a leader I am capable of using my potential to aid in inspiring others. I hope to prove myself to be a good example and guide for those who need help. As a new inclusion to NHS, I am committed to help my fellow students study and to do their best. I possess a variety of study and organization skills that I can pass on to other students. I am a open-minded and patient person, making it easy for me to take criticism willingly and accept recommendations thoughtfully. I can work well either individually or on a team and can Inspire positive attitudes and behaviors in others. I promise to utilize my leadership skills and work with other NHS members to achieve success for the school. With my characteristics, I will inspire new concepts and further develop the character of NHS. I plan to volunteer in events as much as possible, and can fill in for other people who can’t be in attendance. Whether I’m volunteering or helping a fellow student, I vow to act with honesty, integrity, diligence, and the best of my ability. With my skills and abilities, I Would be proud to step up and represent NHS with confidence. I am a great strategist and am able to
Throughout high school I have dreamed of having the opportunity to attend Indiana University. I have a true passion for babies. I love to learn how babies are developed and how they become such an amazing part of the world. Therefore, I would like to apply to Indiana University and pursue a degree in Pediatric Nursing. I would love to be able to deliver babies and deliver new life into this earth. There are several opportunities available for me to get involved with new leadership opportunities. I want to be able to be a leader for all age groups.
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
As I thought of this article, many of the issues I have faced as a single Hmong woman in her mid-twenties came to mind. Should I discuss the functional reasons why marriage is so important in the Hmong culture, especially for women? Or do I talk about the lack of eligible, older Hmong men? Better yet, should I complain about the attempts by my relatives to find me a good husband as if it were an unfortunate circumstance that I was single instead of a conscious choice? Thinking it over, though, I decided that all those questions boiled down to one fundamental truth – the Hmong community is still trying to learn how to treat the increasing number of Hmong women who, like me, are making the choice to stay single in their mid-twenties.
In eighth and ninth grade, I was on the volleyball team. I learned and developed the ability to work with a team and contribute to the balance of everyone’s strengths and weaknesses. I also was on the track team from seventh through tenth grade. I competed in triple jump, an individual event. Through this, I learned how to be independent and acquire skills on my own. The clubs I have been in are FBLA, DECA, NHS, FCCLA, Willard Paws Club and Foreign Language Club. Being part of FBLA and DECA and competing in events have greatly improved my communication and business abilities. I understand what it means to be professional and respectful. NHS has showed me how important it is to give my best effort with everything I do, to
Ever since I first heard about The National Honor Society during my freshman year, I knew I wanted to be involved with it. With this goal in mind, I have worked extremely hard the past two years to maintain my 4.0 GPA, improve in all of my sports, and help my community whernever possible. Some places/events I have volunteered for include the Hopedale day care, Oly Swish basketball camps and games, and helping renovate our high school softball fields. While all of these are enjoyable, my favorite, by far, is helping at Oly Swish camps and games!
I was in 1st grade when I found out that I had a learning disability. I still
In order to improve BSA, the officers must collaborate constantly to provide as many novel and valuable experiences to its’ members as possible. I believe my strong background in the organization of community service and social events will provide valuable tools to the BSA officer team. In order for BSA to be truly successful, every elected officer must be willing to put others before themselves, and perform every task asked of them full heartedly. I know for a fact I will be able to lead others by example as an officer this upcoming school
After finishing my first semester with all A’s, I received an invitation to join The National Society of Collegiate Scholars in the mail. This was the first I heard about the society. Networking, recognition, the chance for leadership development, and scholarship opportunities motivated me to join and I’m glad that I did. Organizations like the National Society of Collegiate Scholars offers many of the resources that all students, especially first generation students like myself, desperately need to succeed in college. NSCS offers connections, support, recognition, opportunities and scholarships which help students to be successful.
A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. The fact that I’m searching for an international education is the proof of my desire to establish myself as a global citizen and my interest in the world issues.
