Nikola Tesla My great grandmother was born on September 30, 1895 in Strum, Wisconsin, and used to tell us the most important invention for the home, in her lifetime, was the clothes washing machine. Now history always seems to make the present era seem more civilized, when in fact, it is probably only cleaner, thanks to my grandmother's favorite invention. But, I wonder if it is easier. Certainly, there were many patents issued in the 1880's for inventions that truly would change the lives of future generations, and a handful of these amazing contrivances would have a great impact on that which is truly important to an industrialized nation: the machinery that speeds business, business being the true backbone of a country, but to a country …show more content…
Many business machines were patented before Nikola Tesla patented the alternating-current "electromagnetic motor" in 1888 (while the popular Thomas Edison was stubbornly clinging to direct-current motors), but soon more and more inventors were realizing this new source of harnessed power could bring glorious miracles to business, thus providing them with even more glorious profits. But first, the washing machine, truly in honor of my great grandmother, who will be 105 years old this year.
Before the days of washing machines, people got dirt out of their clothes by pounding them on rocks and washing the dirt away in streams. Sand was used as an abrasive to free the dirt. AC offered great advantages over the DC system. By using Tesla's newly developed transformers, AC voltages could be stepped up and transmitted over long distances through thin wires. DC could not (requiring a large power plant every square mile while transmitting through very thick cables). Of course, a system of transmission would be incomplete without devices to run on them. So, he invented the motors. This was no simple achievement - scientists of the late 1800's were convinced that no motor could be devised for an alternating current system, making the use of AC a waste of time. After all, if the current reverses direction 60 times a second, the motor will rock back and forth and never get anywhere.

Throughout Rajiv Joseph’s play, Gruesome Playground Injuries, the two characters, Doug and Kayleen, sporadically meet throughout the course of 30 years due to injuries ranging from getting “beaten up pretty badly” (Joseph 31) to going into a “coma” (Joseph 27). The play starts out with the two characters first meeting in the school nurse’s office with injuries of their own. This is the start of a relationship that is full of pain and healing throughout the years. Told in a very unique structure of five year increments, the play shows how injuries, a reoccurring image that may be self-inflicted or inflicted upon one, bring the pair together when either is in a dire situation.
In the 1880s, there was a war going on in the United States. Backstabbing, secrecy, and death were common. However, this war had no weapons. It was a dual between two geniuses. These two men are the fathers of modern technology. The War of Currents was a battle between the famous inventor Thomas Edison, and the mysterious genius Nikola Tesla. Tesla and Edison engaged in an epic competition to create the most efficient, cheap, usable form of electricity. Everyone knows who Thomas Edison was, but not many people know of Nikola Tesla. Tesla was an unappreciated mastermind who changed the world with his inventions, performed many strange experiments, and practically invented usable electricity.
The first machine at home was the sewing machine. At the time during the 1850's it was seen to be a miracle that a machine could sew by itself. (History) Today, a large quantity and variety of clothes that many admire are able to be made because of the sewing machines that produce clothes in quick time. Sewing machines have impacted the American society by making the life of countless housewives easier, developing American machinery, and starting the ability of individual business for many. Elias Howe, who succeeded in building a working sewing machine, saw his wife struggling with the sewing she took in to support the family. Howe developed a skill that the shuttle stitched 250 a minute without damaging the clothing. (Elias) Isaac Singer, an inventor and manufacturer, developed Howe’s sewing machine, which eventually led to the copy violation of the right of Howe’s sewing machine. Sewing machines allowed the start of individual business for many, including Elias Howe and Issac Singer. When Alexander Graham Bell and Antonio Meucci developed the telephone, they distributed communication among the masses (a profit), and thereby changed the globe for the better; that same reason is reflected throughout the ages: Percy Spencer, inventor of the microwave, gained favorable avail via his invention for not only himself, but the Earth as well. Thus, the innovators of the world retain that reason: they change things for the better because of the positive benefit that would befit doing so - the positive benefit for not only themselves, but the world. As the late 19th century progressed, technological ideas and inventions began to thrive. The notion that technology would impact life as we know it was an unbelievable idea to comprehend. People had no idea that something so simple such as the light bulb would become so vital to them and for century’s to come. All of these qualities are proven to improve crime rate. Socially disorganized communities lack those qualities. According to our lecture, “characteristics such as poverty, residential mobility, and racial/ethnic heterogeneity contribute to social disorganization.” A major example would be when a community has weak social ties. This can be caused from a lack of resources needed to help others, such as single-parent families or poor families. These weak social ties cause social disorganization, which then leads higher levels of crime. Community policing is a strategy used by various departments in order to create and maintain a relationship between the law enforcement agency and the community being patrolled. Community policing is composed of three critical components, community partnerships, organizational transformation, and problem solving (Gardiner, 154, 2016). Community partnerships are pivotal in community policing since they increase public trust and create am improved relationship in law enforcement agencies better serving the community (Gardiner, 87, 2016). These partnerships not only offer public input but also encourage the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in order to minimize crime within the community (Gardiner, 88, 2016). Unlike, the traditional strategies of policing, community orientated policing has been adopted by two-thirds of agencies in order to improve public safety and control crime. (Gardiner, 148, 2016).

Community oriented policing is a philosophy that directs police operation, management and strategies. The model emphasizes on establishing a partnership between community and police and solves problems that directly affect the needs of the involved community (Chappell, 2009). The model of policing promises that coordination between the police and community relations will assist to reduce crime and fear and improve relations between the two, facilitating faster responses to distress calls and routine calls for service. Thomas (Alva) Edison was one of America’s most important and famous inventors. Edison was born into a time and place where there wasn’t much technological advancements. His inventions helped a lot of things quickly change in the world. His inventions contributed to many inventions today such as the night light, movies, telephones, and records and CDs.
The Tesla coil was made by Nikola Tesla in 1891. Tesla was a scientist that believed the ground and Earth were better conductors than metals. Therefore, he created the Tesla Coil which was a device that could send electricity to appliances without cords or wires. This device was able to power lights or other things that required electricity from several feet away. The Tesla coil looks like a mushroom with a metal top and copper wire coiled around the center of it. A Tesla Coil if tweaked can make electrical currents go through your body, make electron winds, or shoot lightning bolts. Altogether the Coil was made so the world wouldn't have wires everywhere. The community policing philosophy itself encouraged individual agencies to strategically adapt the notion of community policing to meet their own circumstances, it is not meant to be applied monolithically to all law enforcement agencies (Schieder, Chapman and Schapiro, 2009, p. 696). Therefore, no one community policing project looks the same from one jurisdiction to another and from state to state. Community policing also encourages partnerships with anyone who has a stake in the public safety problems (p. 697). This may include local businesses, social service agencies and the school districts. Hence, law enforcement must have established a working relationship with all its members in the community; because the common aim of community policing is to bridge distance between them (Terpstra, 2011, p. 88).According to Lima (2010), law enforcement should reach out to every group that is forming their operational environment, so as to reassure them that they care about their safety (p. 13). This is done through the discovery and elimination of biases, prejudices, and barriers that impede the ability to deal with cultural differences in the community (Coderoni, 2002, p. 16). Decatur Illinois police department has worked with its community members in bridging that gap and eliminating barriers. Together, they have identified and addressed areas that are in need of heightened patrolling. Although crime has not been eliminated, community policing has certainly impacted the outcome. This paper investigated the community policing policies and procedures of the Decatur Police Department. It also presented the plans, future goals and diversity considerations of the program.
