Crime Prevention
Introduction
Crime rate is the ratio of crimes in a neighborhood to the amount of people that populate that specific area (Free Dictionary, 2016). Many officers respond to calls they receive, deal with the problem, and then move onto the next call. By reacting in this manner, it does not help the crime rates to decrease because they are not coming up with solutions to prevent crimes (Argosy University, 2016). Crime prevention is a proactive approach to come up with solutions to help reduce victimization, but the goal is to prevent the crimes altogether (Argosy University, 2016).
Proactive Crime Prevention Strategy Here are some proactive ways to bring the community together and to help reduce crime in their neighborhood.
Directories for Services- educate the community on who they can call to help with certain issues.
5. Community Fund Raisers- have the community come together to raise money to help residents and small businesses to help secure their properties better. This will help prevent break-ins and robberies.
6. Community Clean- Up & Park Patrols- Have the entire community, including the youth, to be involved with cleaning up the neighborhood and patrolling the parks for suspicious activities (all youth accompanied by adults).
7. Conduct Community Awareness Events.
8. Programs in place that require inmates to help clean up and repair the damages they have done to properties (non-violent inmates).
9. Youth Led Community Programs- to help reduce drug activities and to make the neighborhood less vulnerable for those types of activities.
10. Provide Victim Services- these services can help relieve stress and help prevent the victim from being victimized again.
(NCPC, 2016). These types of programs involve the community and will help them take back their neighborhood. The community will be more aware and educated in preventing techniques to help minimize crimes being committed in their neighborhood. These programs will unite the community as a team and bring them closer together as a group. These types of programs will also send a message out that crimes will not be tolerated in their
Depending on the types of crimes being committed, many victims must realize that their race and or social status might play a huge role in why they have been victimized in the first place. Becoming educated and learning about the crimes being committed, and taking the right steps to prevention the crimes, will help minimize the chances of becoming a crime
This program was built on the ideology that youths participate in criminal activities due to the lack of constructive opportunities and outlets. BUILD provides "several popular gang prevention strategies" to reduce the gang violence rate in crime-ridden neighborhoods. Several alternatives include "deploying trained street workers, organizing afterschool sports programs, providing career training and implementing the BUILD Violence Intervention Curriculum." The youths could shift from joining gangs to participating in these opportunities that could benefit their future. Also, this program has introduced Case Managers who are responsible for providing reentry curriculum and "follow-up case
...to be enrolled in the program, the process will begin of engaging the teens for their social development, providing alternatives to crime like sport activities, enrichment workshops on topics like science and technology, and partnering teens with mentors and role models to hold them accountable and counsel them on their life choices. Phase Five is the actual implementation of the plans to reduce juvenile crime by attacking the problem on the front lines: at home and in the community. This phase of the proposal will continue long into the future with significant implications for community involvement and civic participation.
The role of civic engagement in neighborhood revitalization, particularly in low income African American communities, has gained increased awareness and in recent years. Community, nonprofit, and government leaders now view civic engagement as a critical component of effective solutions as they seek to address crime, unemployment, low graduation rates and numerous other neighborhood challenges. Several successful initiatives have come to fruition and provide strong evidence of the benefits that increased civic engagement provides.
Everyone has been impacted by crime victimization at some point in their life. While not all will experience first-hand victimization, the impact effects many people. Understanding a person’s past victimization will aid in determining their strengths and needs. The world we live in is not perfect, people are messy, everyone has a story, and it is our job as human service professionals to serve each client with a holistic approach. It is often said that human service professionals enter the field because their own past experiences led them to want to help others through traumatizing, victimizing experiences as they were helped.
Crime has become an ongoing trend, which has become an issue in society today. However, crimes can be prevented through various prevention strategies. The case study regarding the Kings cross shooting, where youths of indigenous background were joyriding in a stolen car in Kings Cross. They were spotted by police and lead to a police chase that resulted in two pedestrians being injured and the youths getting shot by police. Through this case study, the essay will assess how this crime can be prevented in the future with the help of developmental crime prevention. Developmental crime prevention is a way of placing strategies of preventing crime and is af popular approach in Australia because it aims at early intervention program. The main
Community policing is a strategy used by various departments in order to create and maintain a relationship between the law enforcement agency and the community being patrolled. Community policing is composed of three critical components, community partnerships, organizational transformation, and problem solving (Gardiner, 154, 2016). Community partnerships are pivotal in community policing since they increase public trust and create am improved relationship in law enforcement agencies better serving the community (Gardiner, 87, 2016). These partnerships not only offer public input but also encourage the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in order to minimize crime within the community (Gardiner, 88, 2016). Unlike, the traditional strategies of policing, community orientated policing has been adopted by two-thirds of agencies in order to improve public safety and control crime. (Gardiner, 148, 2016).
There are many different ways of policing in the 21st century and all address and apply different theories and ideas to try and control the crime this day in age. One of these methods is called community policing and many law enforcement agencies around our country and the world use it as a model for policing and interacting with communities. Community policing is based on the belief that policing agencies should partner with communities with the goals to prevent or reduce the amount of crime in those areas (Pollock, 2012 p. 99). There are 3 main aspects of community policing that I will talk about in this paper and they are community partnerships, organizational transformation, and problem solving. After hearing about the
... member or has served in prison so they could change their lives by turning away from crime, they also get training to detect problems before they happen like shootings. This solution would help my community's problem because cure violence has reduced shootings and killings by -41% to -73%. Also they saw a 100% homicide reduction in 5 out of 8 communities. This is some big improvements that are going on other communities. One of the communities was Englewood and it saw a -40% reduction is shooting density. If this solution is not implemented in my community nothing will change you will still see crime and deaths. There are already 110 homicides so far in the New City community. That's a lot and you will keep seeing these numbers if they don't put a plan into action to stop the gangs. They need to start to interact with the people who are high risk to joining a gang.
Community based programs are alternative options available to juveniles, instead of incarceration that safely serves juveniles and give juveniles a second chance to become productive members of society. Community based programs aim to efficiently rehabilitate and prevent juvenile delinquency and reduce deviant behavior in juveniles (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012).
Community oriented policing has been around for over 30 years, and promotes and supports organizational strategies to address the causes, and reduce the fear of crime and social disorder through problem solving tactics. The way community policing works is it requires the police and citizens to work together to increase safety for the public. Each community policing program is different depending on the needs of the community. There have been five consistent key elements of an effective community oriented policing program: Adopting community service as the overarching philosophy of the organization, making an institutional commitment to community policing that is internalized throughout the command structure, emphasizing geographically decentralized models of policing that stress services tailored to the needs of individual communities rather than a one-size-fits-all approach for the entire jurisdiction, empowering citizens to act in partnership with the police on issues of crime and more broadly defined social problems, for example, quality-of-life issues, and using problem-oriented or problem-solving approaches involving police personnel working with community members. Community oriented policing has improved the public’s perception of the police in a huge way. Community policing builds more relationships with the
The key characteristics of community policing are as follows: Police officers are usually called upon to be particularly thoughtful, creative problem solvers. They are asked to listen to the concerns of community members, to logically reason out the roots of problems, to identify and research potential answers, to implement solutions, and to assess results. Police officers work in partnership with concerned citizens. The second characteristic is that police officers are visible and accessible component of the community and work with youths and other community members top address delinquency problems. On the third characteristic, police officers patrol a limited number of jurisdictions on foot. The so-called foot patrol officers are believed to be more approachable and offer a comforting presence to citizens. The fourth and last characteristic that will be mentioned on this paper is that the community policing have decentralized operations, which allows officers to develop greater familiarity with the needs of various constituencies in the community and to adapt procedures to accommodate those needs.
Situational crime prevention reduces the opportunities for criminals to commit crime by making changes to or altering the environment with the assistance of the police, neighbors and other agencies (Worrall, 2008). The main theories of situational crime prevention are: environmental crime prevention, rational offender perspective, and routine activities (Worrall, 2008). Environmental crime prevention basically states that four elements must be present for a crime to occur: a target, a place (opportunity), a law, and an offender. Environmental crime prevention is designed to prevent people from breaking the law by altering street and building designs, or altering the environment to make it safer (Worrall, 2008). An example of this that is used by law enforcement is to place a sign at the public trash dumpsters informing the public that the area is being videotaped. This method is used to alter the publi...
“Neighborhood Watch programs became popular in the 1970s and 1980s; by 2000, roughly 40% of the U.S. residential population was covered by such citizen crime-watching programs. These neighborhood associations typically involve recruiting residents to participate in community meetings and various surveillance tasks around properties and common areas; a block captain and coordinator may take leadership roles and serve as liaisons to the local police” (Whibey, 2012). Neighborhood watch empowers everyday citizens to take charge of their life and the safety of their community to become active by fighting against crime and community issues. Neighborhood watches are not only responsible for the safety of their community but cleaning up the disorder as well, so when there is an issue of needing to clean up the neighborhood of trash or graffiti, this is the group that can take charge of getting that fixed or deterring it from happening.
Put the neighbor back into neighborhood by creating a sense of cooperation. Neighborhood Watch can play an important role in deterring future crimes such as arson or burglary. Building a strong and good relationship among government agencies like local fire department, emergency personnel, and law enforcement could be beneficial for the community in reducing arson.
The Operation Weed and Seed, a U.S. Department of Justice community-based initiative, is an innovative and comprehensive multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization. Operation Weed and Seed is foremost a strategy—rather than a grant program—which aims to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the country. (2005, U.S. Department of Justice). This Program would assist us in preventing crime and also to reduce crime. Individuals that are a part of the Weed and Seed, could assist also in providing information as well.
