When taking on the position as a Police Chief with a team of 150 sworn officers, it would be my duty to ensure the safety of my guys as well as to change order so that the community would have good communication with our department. One way that we could get our community policing in effect, is to first have other agencies to partner with us in making this agency more community friendly. By partnering with other agencies throughout the community, would enhance our efforts in cracking down in crimes as well as preventing crime. One Government Agency here in the Daytona Beach area would be Volusia County Community Assistance. This is an agency that could possibly assist us in providing the last known address if an individual’s has went there for any kind of services as well as their family member’s addresses. There is certain information that one has to provide when receiving assistance from this agency, and when providing this information, you would have to provide the actual documents, not just word of mouth. The Operation Weed and Seed, a U.S. Department of Justice community-based initiative, is an innovative and comprehensive multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization. Operation Weed and Seed is foremost a strategy—rather than a grant program—which aims to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the country. Individuals that are a part of the Weed and Seed, could assist also in providing information as well. A nonprofit-Service Provider in this community is Crime Stoppers. The community will see how important is it to capture these criminals as well as prevent crime from happening. We would transform organizational environment by creating more community neighborhood watches. There would also be more of the officers that will be available to the community. I would prefer to put up more sub stations to show that we are here for the community as well as to capture criminals. The officers as well as the community should do community service projects cleaning up the area that are more targeted to attract crime. In order to increase technological capacity within the local business, I would suggest CCTV, as well as cameras in parking lots, live body security guards in big lobby areas, and add more lighting in dark places were individuals may travel through at night.
This book review covers Policing Gangs in America by Charles Katz and Vincent Webb. Charles Katz has a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, while Vincent Webb has a Ph.D. in Sociology, making both qualified to conduct and discuss research on gangs. Research for Policing Gangs in America was gathered in four cities across the American Southwest; Inglewood, California, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona. This review will summarize and discuss the main points of each chapter, then cover the relationship between the literature and class discussions in Introduction to Policing and finally it will note the strengths and weaknesses of book.
In 2003 as a response to communities with a large amount and growing number of youth gangs the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice, initiated the Gang Reduction Program (GRP) (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The formation of gangs is seen as a response to system failures and community dysfunction. As a result, one of OJJPD’s anti-gang initiatives is to make communities safer and have a pro-social environment (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). Furthermore, OJJDP plans to provide economic and social opportunities that gangs often promise to new recruits which are often obtained in an illegal and dangerous fashion (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). OJJDP believes that the GRP is capable of addressing the underlying issues for the increasing popularity and intensity of gang activity in specific suburban and rural neighborhoods (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The program takes an integrative approach to dealing with the issue of increasing membership and participation with gangs. The following will discuss the program’s goal, theoretical basis, methods of operation, and overall effectiveness. After reviewing these major aspects of the GRP I will personally assess the value of this program and conclude whether or not the evidence supporting the program’s efficiency is strong enough for me to recommend it for implementation.
Several California cities recently moved forward with gang injunctions to reduce violent crime rates. Gang injunctions have become a distinct Californian approach to fight crimes since they were first introduced in the 1980s in Los Angeles. The injunctions that have been granted primarily affect impoverished, minority neighborhoods and may actually serve to further stigmatize and oppress innocent minority youth who also live in these communities. One program, Cincinnati’s Initiative to Reduce Violence or (CIRV), (Ceasefire), targets the gun violence in the city. CIRV offers intervention for youth who have fallen into the gang culture. CIRV also offers youth an alternative to the gang way of life through a variety of social interventions. This initiative was adopted after the Boston Gun Project started in the 1990’s. The main focus of CIRV is to deter chronic offenders involved in violent crime and to mitigate gang and group violence. The objective is to offer violent groups or gangs alternatives to violence. CIRV has made job training, educational opportunities, and social programs available to these groups, and promotes them as providing “a way off of the streets.” If offenders refuse to take advantage of these opportunities, they are dealt with through the justice system.

Community-oriented policing is commonly by used by law enforcement agencies (Kerley and Benson 2000, 46). Community-oriented policing was designed to enhance police service and solve problems through an interactive process with members of the community. This included, preventative measures, problem solving and community partnership (Sciarabba 2009, Kerley and Benson 2000; Mirsky 2009). By including community partnership, it creates open communication between the police and members of the community which in turn, allows the police to be more efficient in developing peace and security in the community (Sciarabba 2009; Kerley and Benson 2000; Mirsky 2009).
There are many different ways of policing in the 21st century and all address and apply different theories and ideas to try and control the crime this day in age. One of these methods is called community policing and many law enforcement agencies around our country and the world use it as a model for policing and interacting with communities. Community policing is based on the belief that policing agencies should partner with communities with the goals to prevent or reduce the amount of crime in those areas (Pollock, 2012 p. 99). Throughout the history of law enforcement different models have been introduced and implanted in an effort to reduce and deter crime. The most popular model today is community oriented policing. Community oriented policing has been defined numerous ways and can be describe using a variety of different programs and services. Although there is not one generalized idea of what community oriented policing is all who practice the model share the same underlying principle of bringing the community and police together to criminal and social problems in the affected neighborhoods (Oliver, 1998). Even though this model of policing has become more popular than the traditional model and it has evolved since its origins there is still a lot of debate about its effectiveness. In reviewing other academic works on community oriented policing I hope to identify whether or not it is effective in reducing crime and if it is effective in agency investigation practices. If it is effective, I would like to identify whether it is universally effective or if it only reduces a specific type of crime. If research does not prove effectiveness of the model I would like to identify why it is not effective and possible solutions to make it more effective.
Community oriented policing has been around for over 30 years, and promotes and supports organizational strategies to address the causes, and reduce the fear of crime and social disorder through problem solving tactics. The way community policing works is it requires the police and citizens to work together to increase safety for the public. Each community policing program is different depending on the needs of the community. There have been five consistent key elements of an effective community oriented policing program: Adopting community service as the overarching philosophy of the organization, making an institutional commitment to community policing that is internalized throughout the command structure, emphasizing geographically decentralized models of policing that stress services tailored to the needs of individual communities rather than a one-size-fits-all approach for the entire jurisdiction, empowering citizens to act in partnership with the police on issues of crime and more broadly defined social problems, for example, quality-of-life issues, and using problem-oriented or problem-solving approaches involving police personnel working with community members. With police funding cuts on the rise and looking to continue it is going to have to be up to every resident in every neighborhood and community to begin looking out for each other to help keep crime in their area to a minimum. The police will still be there to help people and respond to calls and emergency’s but people need to learn to help each other out too.
The future of policing is fairly clear in what direction it is heading. It has been slowly reforming to meet the needs of the people, reduce crime, and make policing more efficient. Some of the reforms that will probably take place in the future include, better educated police officers and police managers, consolidation of police departments to save on money and resources, upgraded technology, race and gender equality, better testing techniques to recruit and promote within the department, and improved proactive planning techniques. One of these proactive tools that will surely become more widely used and implemented better is community policing. It has been evolving since its first introduction into the police world and will see more reforms in the future. Compstat should also become more widely used by almost all police departments to make those in charge more accountable and for improved crime mapping.
These types of programs involve the community and will help them take back their neighborhood. The community will be more aware and educated in preventing techniques to help minimize crimes being committed in their neighborhood. These programs will unite the community as a team and bring them closer together as a group. These types of programs will also send a message out that crimes will not be tolerated in their

Police officers have a very complex job, they are held to a higher extent by societies, who expect police officers to be able to solve every problem, and they are limited in what they can do due to the expectations set by their administration. Police officers have various roles that they are expected to maintain. According to the police mission and mandate, a police officer must be able to reduce crime and maintain order, reduce the fear of crime, solve neighborhood problems and improve the overall quality of life, and develop a better relationship with the community. To keep the community safe crime prevention must be on a continuous basis and something law enforcement personnel and police keep on top of. It should include the community and the citizens of the community to help get the message out there to keep the society safer. There have been many crime prevention strategies tested and some that proved to work and others that failed miserably. The strategies that fail can be used to rethink and utilize how things may be done differently in the future and what and what does not work in what areas. Seattle and Washington State have developed new strategies to help keep communities safer (Seeker, 2012).
