Nikola Tesla’s American Dream The American Dream can mean a number of different things, depending on who is asked to share their opinion. To some it includes bringing something into existence that is much bigger than just themselves. To others it may involve the wealth one accumulates throughout their life. Born on July 10, 1956, Nikola Tesla came from Croatia. Born in the city of Smiljan, in the time when Croatia was apart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Arriving in New York 1884, he was hired as an engineer at Thomas Edison’s New York headquarters (“Nikola Tesla”). Over the course of the year working there, Edison was impressed with the young mind of Tesla. To have made such an impression on Edison is no small feat, yet it was one of the beginning steps that became Tesla making his way in a new nation to call home. Later on, Tesla's invention of the alternating-current (AC) system caught the special attention of a certain would-be investor. This man in particular was George Westinghouse, engineer and businessman, who had been searching for an answer to the problem of supplying America the long-distance power it would eventually expand upon. In the year of 1888, under the impression Tesla’s work would aid in the discovery of a solution, he purchased the patents for $60,000 in cash and stock in what was the Westinghouse Corporation. This was a great deal of money at the time, and still is today, yet it would not halt or even slow Tesla’s production of ingenious inventions. The scientific world found a growing interest in alternating-current systems at this time, pitting Tesla and Westinghouse competitively against Thomas Edison. Edison’s next step featured releasing statements to the press attempting to dismantle any appeal that AC power had for the public. Nikola Tesla pressed on with the determination that had become a staple of his work. It is in this period of time that he went on to patent a number of inventions, one of which was the "Tesla coil.” (“Nikola Tesla Biography”). Even in todays time the number of patents the genius Tesla eventually had under his name remain disputed, with reports saying their total surpasses the barrier of 700.
In his journey of living the American Dream, Tesla carved a path for himself that would only establish him as a pioneer of many fronts. The Tesla coil, which he invented in 1891, is widely used today in radios, television sets, and amongst other electronics. A feat of Tesla’s that is in a league of its own was his alternating-current induction motor, which is considered one of the ten greatest discoveries of all time. Among his vast and impressive array of accredited discoveries “are the fluorescent light, laser beam, wireless communications, wireless transmission of electrical energy, remote control, robotics, Tesla’s turbines and vertical take off aircraft” (Vujovic). Although he is often regarded as the father of the radio and modern electrical transmissions systems, a title one would expect its recipient to earn only by focusing on one subject wholeheartedly, his creative vision never narrowed. He furthered exploration of solar energy and contributed to harboring the power of the sea. topic. In more ways than one, Nikola Tesla can be looked upon as a prime example of what it means to live out the American Dream. Tesla symbolizes a force of inspiration for all in the name of science. He was a true visionary, far ahead of those in his time and played a major role in scientific development. A man who now stands as a figure of someone who found success besides being an immigrant, just one of the many challenges he overcame. He is a true model of one who voluntarily took on the strongest of opponents, and persevered through their obstacles by never limiting himself. For his well-earned recognition of the work he completed, New York State and many other states in the USA proclaimed July 10, Tesla’s birthday, Nikola Tesla Day – and rightfully so.

Tesla is best known for his feud with Thomas Edison over AC power Versus DC Power. He was also well known for inventing the Tesla Coil which is still used in radio technology today. Nikola Tesla was mostly forgotten until the 1990’s when there was a resurgence of interest in popular culture.
The term “American Dream” is defined as an idea which believes that all people have the possibility of prosperity and success. The idea first came from James Adams, a noted American writer and historian. He claimed, “Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability and achievement.” Therefore, the core concepts of the American Dream were closely linked to hard work and opportunity.

Tesla’s career as an inventor started when he was in his late twenties. He displayed his incredible understanding of electricity and physics when he created his first invention, the induction motor. The induction motor is a small, electric motor that has become a very useful machine. In fact, most household appliances run using Tesla’s induction motor (Vujovic 1). Score one for Tesla. Soon after he invented the induction motor, Tesla moved to America to try his luck at living the American dream. While in New York City, Tesla got the amazing opportunity to work for his hero, Thomas Edison. However, Tesla soon quit working for Edison due to some disagreements between the two inventors. And so with Edison and his men biting at Tesla’s heels, Nikola set out on his own to make a name for himself (Vujovic 1). Tesla soon became Edison’s greatest competitor. The American Dream, is about becoming something, to the best way to achieve fulfillment of ones life. The dream is and always has been a reality. The more that Americans and immigrants insist on the dream as a right, and pursue it with determination, the more likely it will be to remain a live option accessible to all. The dream does not originate from America; it derives from us, the people. If we exert all our efforts, we at any moment in American history are more likely to be what the country had intended to become. With that predicament already visible, every advance we make may very well lead to another, and every realization of the American Dream will evolve.
Nikola Tesla is a man that many individuals associate with brilliance. Moreover, Tesla is a name that ignites impulses within an individual’s brain which illuminate, via bio-circuitry, the thought association of Tesla and brilliance, similar to the force we term as electricity. Brilliance however, shouldn’t be the only descriptive word to come to mind when thinking of one of the greatest engineers and inventors to live. Innovation and determination should be undoubtedly included in the list of descriptive words of Mr. Nikola Tesla. When Adams mentioned the term, it had much more of an idealistic meaning, rather than the materialistic meaning it has in modern society.
