Abstract
The purpose of this experiment was to answer the question of which antacid is more readily or in other words the best at neutralizing stomach acid. This experiment is insightful and the importance of this experiment is that humans have a strong acid within the epigastric region or stomach known as hydrochloric acid (HCl). HCl is essential as the body uses it to digest the food that comes through the epigastrium. Through this process is how humans can break down all the food eaten to absorb the nutrients and vitamins needed for survival. Acidity in a certain environment can prove to be harmful or even safe which is considered, especially organs such as the stomach since HCl is primarily used to digest and break downs foods especially fats to that we may secrete them better (McAdams 1). This process of digestion and break down of foods into vitamins and nutrients that almost everyone is aware of is very vital to human nature and life. Therefore, the best antacid is Alcalak. It may be assumed that that Alka-Seltzer would be the best type of antacid used to neutralize stomach acid since it is a common pharmaceutical drug that’s name has been of common word. In other words, this experiment would have been more stable accurate with the use of a volumetric pipette would have been more beneficial if they were stable and more available of use. The result from this experiment would suggest that the antacids that takes the least NaOH or the most HCL neutralized would produce the best antacid due to the NaOH being such a strong base and HCL being such a strong acid. Antacids have some trace of NaOH in order to counteract the amount of acidity HCl carries or in other terms stomach acid. The best antacid would take the least amount of base due to the fact of how fast the process and how relieving it would be to neutralize stomach acid. This base as discussed is known as NaOH. It is clear now why there are medications to neutralize stomach acid or HCl and why you need something such as NaOH a base or antacids in fact. However, due to some inconsistencies it was not observed the titrations of the other Antacids. In undertaking the experiment, the hypothesis “if the number of Alka Seltzer tablets reacted increases, then the maximum rate of reaction will increase,” was formed. When graphing the relationship between the maximum rate of reaction and the number of Alka Seltzer tablets reacting, Graph 7 produced a line of best fit with a constant increasing slope that passed through the origin (0,0). This is characteristic of linear graphs, which have the general equation, y=mx, where m is the slope, a constant term, and y and x are changing variables that are directly proportional (i.e. y ∝x). Hence, it can be deduced that Graph 7 is a linear graph, and that there is a linear relationship between the maximum rate of reaction and the number of Alka Seltzer tablets, where they are directly proportional. That is, as the number of Alka Seltzer tablets increased, the maximum rate of reaction increased, supporting the hypothesis. As the true value of the maximum rate of reaction per Alka Seltzer tablet was not known, and a value for comparison was unavailable, the accuracy of the results could not be determined. However, due to the scatter in Graphs 2 to 7, it was evident that the results had low precision. In future, repeating the experiment using different and/or new apparatus will aid in detecting systematic errors and improve the accuracy and validity of the results.

It utilises both anabolic and catabolic reactions; the first reaction of the cycle, in which oxaloacetate (a four carbon compound) condenses with acetate (a two carbon compound) to form citrate (a six carbon compound) is typically anabolic. The production of the isomeric isocitrate is simply intramolecular rearrangement. The subsequent two reactions are typically catabolic, producing succinate (a four carbon compound), which is then oxidised, forming fumarate (a four carbon compound). Water addition produces malate and then oxidised for regeneration of oxaloacetate. Thus the cycle can be seen to exhibit both anabolic and catabolic processes to form its intermediates.
