Have you ever dined in an extravagant restaurant and never could figure out how much to leave as a tip and ruins your dining experience? Many people face this diplomatic on daily basis and never can fully understand how this problem can be fixed. Some, consumers say that if tipping was abolished it would cause restaurants to increase the wage of the workers. Therefore, it would expand to the menu prices that the prices would increase. Others, say that increasing the pay of workers and the menu prices would not decrease the demand of their food. Although, these discussions are constantly facing the depositions of one’s personal views. The entire tipping system should be entirely dismantled. With the prices of inflation in prices in the all-around economy it is effecting on how much people are actually tipping. Many of the waiters and waitresses are not actually getting tips and its holding a secure block on the things they can afford. This is being affected because due, to the common core things of prices being increased in food, electricity, and gas; people just cannot afford to tip. Some say that people in favor of tipping say that these people that do not tip stay home instead, because they cannot afford this. This is not the case many young adults are still going out to eat but taking the cost out of tipping because they believe they should not have to pay a waitress or a waiter’s salary. Another problem, with people not earning enough from tips is that some people use it as a way to be discriminatory towards the waiter or waitress (DDFDDDDD). It has been implied because a professor by the name of Michael Lynn stated that “White servers are tipped more than black servers for the same quality service regardless of the race of the customer.” This is because there is a small minority of people that are taking their racist beliefs and affecting it on workers that they are discriminatory
Ehrenreich didn’t want to be a waitress any more than some waitresses, but she did it for her research. Ehrenreich once stated that, “Waitres sing is also something I’d like to avoid, because I remember it leaving me bone-tired when I was eighteen.” (13). Her first job was at Hearthside, a restaurant in Key West, Florida. She was hired as a waitress, starting at $2.43 plus tips. She worked the afternoon shift. Hearthside was being managed by a West Indian man by name of Phillip. The management wasn’t the best. They treated their employees disrespectfully. At an employee meeting, they were threatened by the management. Ehrenreich stated, “I have not been treated this way-lined up in the corridor, threatened with locker searches, peppered with carelessly aimed accusation-since junior high school” (24). When they were just standing around, the manager would give them extra work to do. According to Ehrenreich, “You start dragging out each little chore because if the manager on duty catches you in an idle moment, he will give you something far nastier to do. So I wipe, I clean, consolidate catsups bottles and recheck the cheesecake supply, even tour the tables to make sure the customer evaluation is standing perkily.” (22). After a long day in school and studying, every student needs a night off to just relax and enjoy a meal at a restaurant. In this modern time, some aspects of a restaurant can be the deciding choice. Many choose their restaurant of choice based on either those they are with, their personal, cultural appetite, their routine eating habits or their mood. Some of these preferences are similar yet others are the deciding differences. Two common franchise restaurants that pose differences are Applebee’s and Olive Garden. These two restaurants present their differences in environmental and food options causing a choice between them.
People slave for a number of hours of work and find themselves with minimum wage salaries and working with people they don’t want to be around with. In her article Serving in Florida, Barbara Ehrenreich goes undercover as a low-wage worker for various jobs to expose the working conditions of working class Americans. Throughout her essay, she discusses how the employees are fearful of losing their jobs even though they are forced to work in inhumane conditions such as long hours, with no breaks between shifts. While undercover, Ehrenreich attempts to make an argument on how the upper and middle class can find it difficult to survive under minimum wage jobs and allow readers to figure out what can be done to change the restaurant business.
Brian Palmer’s “Tipping is an Abomination”, he tries to reach out to all types of audiences. He attempts to appeal to the emotional side to each audience. He often states that tipping “perpetuates” racism. African-Americans, on average, tip 3% less points than a white customer would have tipped. The tipping gap between Caucasian and Hispanics is even smaller. This fact can affect racial groups greatly. He also shows that this gives restaurant serves an excuse to serve different ethnic groups over other groups. This can anger others to know that they will be served differently and will not get the same respect from their server solely based on their ethnicity. He also often expresses to us that it not fair to waiter to have their tip based most commonly on their attitude and personality rather than their hard work and effort. The idea of tipping has always been normal to myself, as I was a kid and still now I see my parents leaving tips for the waiter/waitress when we go out to eat. It never occurred to me until I got older that it was hard for these workers to get by as their salary depended upon their tips. Once I read Saru Jayaraman’s article on “Why Tipping is Wrong” I was unsure of what I was getting myself into. However, it brought light and told how we should be getting rid of tips and giving the workers a fair and decent salary.
Tips are generally a small amount of money given to a person as gratitude for a service that has been provided. There are many times throughout our everyday lives in which we are put in a position to leave a gratuity. Fast food restaurant chains are a popular and convenient choice for eating on the go in our modern society. There are certainly several positive aspects to fast food establishments, but are the potential health detriments and collective negative effects on society worth it? Or would it be better to support locally owned and operated restaurants? Here I will examine several facts pertaining to these restaurants, as well as explain why I personally believe we should not frequent these establishments, but rather support local restaurants.

They cater to the tastes of their particular customers and are often leaders of food innovation.
