Critique: Why Tipping is Wrong The idea of tipping has always been normal to myself, as I was a kid and still now I see my parents leaving tips for the waiter/waitress when we go out to eat. It never occurred to me until I got older that it was hard for these workers to get by as their salary depended upon their tips. Once I read Saru Jayaraman’s article on “Why Tipping is Wrong” I was unsure of what I was getting myself into. However, it brought light and told how we should be getting rid of tips and giving the workers a fair and decent salary. Now, Saru goes on to explain how a New York restaurateur Danny Meyers plans on getting rid of the tipping system and creating a set minimum wage of $15. It was a good tool to use as he brought up how back then they wanted to get rid of tipping as well towards the end of the nineteenth century for it was “undemocratic and un-American.” (Saru Jayaraman) With just that sentence it gave enough power to push the idea of creating a salary instead. The commonly used practice of tipping has been receiving backlash, nothing new there. Do we really know what a tip truly mean? What effects it has? An article from the Atlantic, my life as a retail worker: Nasty, Brutish and poor, provides the inside details of the contemporary low-wage job. The author, Joseph Williams, goes through the challenges being a low-wage employee and the additional side jobs he has to perform. The low-wage workers, who earn little more than minimum wage, are treated unfairly by the upper management in today’s occupations. In the article, Williams have to do extra work after their shits without any overtime pay. Williams had to “mop the floors in the bathroom, replace the toilet paper and scrub the toilets if necessary” and also “Vacuum and Empty the garbage. Wipe down the glass front doors, every night, even if they don’t really need it. It was all part of the job, done after your shift has ended but without overtime pay” (Joseph Williams). The research shows people with higher position jobs take advantage of the low-wage workers. They recognize the low-wage employees need the job to survive and are less likely to quit the job. Therefore, they can force the low-wage employees to perform extra labor. Also, the management has problem trusting low-wage workers. Williams explains how the security “pats the retail workers down” and checks their “bottom of the backpack” before they leave the store for breaks (Williams). The managements recognize the low-wage salary can’t afford other things than paying for lodging and food, so they believe the employees will likely to steal from their work. Also, in down and out in London and Paris, George Orwell goes through same unfair labor practices and lack of trust when working as a “ploungers” in Hotel X. After each shifts, the security checked for stolen food, he says “Then he stepped out into the passage, made me take off my coat and carefully prodded me all over, searching for stolen food”
In summary, there is one thing that people need to survive in today’s society: money. Making more legal money means that people are less likely to turn to crime for survival, more people are spending more money, and people are living the way they deserve to. Minimum wage needs to be raised to meet the people’s needs.

A federal minimum wage was first set in 1938. The first minimum wage was just 25 cents an hour in 1938. Can you imagine surviving off of 25 cents an hour? Now just over 70 years later the federal minimum wage is now 7.25. The question at hand is the federal minimum wage enough to meet the minimum requirement for a good, happy and healthy life? Some states and cities say no. While a select few states and cities have mirrored the federal minimum wage of 7.25, some states have placed their state or city/county minimum wage marginally higher than the federal minimum wage. So why would some states prefer to have a higher level than required by the federal minimum wage when some state have decided to match or even go below the federal minimum wage level. The answer to this question lies within each state city and county and how they perceive the cost of living in the presiding area. Minimum wage needs a makeover in America despite some of the negative effects that may come along with it. This paper will explore the reasons behind federal and state minimum wages and why some of them differ among states counties and cities across America.
Tips are generally a small amount of money given to a person as gratitude for a service that has been provided. There are many times throughout our everyday lives in which we are put in a position to leave a gratuity. Whether it be dining at a restaurant, getting your hair cut at the salon, or having a few drinks with friends at a bar. In each case there was a service provided to you, now you have a decision to make, how much of a tip is considered acceptable and should you tip everyone that provides a service to you? When deciding on the tip amount the service is one of the major determining factors along with whether or not you plan on visiting the establishment again , and how the tip will play a role in your further dealings with said business.
