Report on the Investigation of West Indies Yacht Club Resort (WIYCR)
I) Investigation Summary
In British Virgin Islands (BVI), there are mainly five upscale hotels and WIYCR is one of them which is famous for its boat collection as well as its top of the line sailing instruction programs. The resort staff is composed of expatriate managers and local employees. This results in cultural communication problems and arises issues on cross-cultural management for the managers. After the investigation, there are mainly four problems including the high level of expatriate turnover, the remarkable rising of the number of guest complaints, the tension between the expatriate and local staff, and finally the lack of motivation of the locals in their work. All the problems above are not caused by the lack of technical or professional staff, however, they can be explained by cultural differences within the organization, and the strict regulations imposed by the local government. The followings are the brief causes of those problems.
1. High turnover rate of expatriate: expatriate managers are frustrated with the performance and practices of local employees. And they do not have enough international experience and cross-cultural communication and sensitivity training.
2. Rising number of complaints: overbooking the resort due to the communication problem between head office and the resort, and as a result the resort is understaffed and offering a low quality of service to the customer.
3. Tension between expatriate and the locals: mainly due to the cultural differences between them. Also the labour laws of BVI increase job protection to them, it is difficult to lay off an unqualified staff.
4. Lack of motivation: locals get paid on hourly basis and get a raise each year without a review, they are not concerned about the extra money such as tips.
II) Possible Solutions
The possible best solution to the cultural differences within WIYCR is to promote cultural unity by changing the mindset of WIYCR¡¦s expatriates, leading to a working environment with harmony, thus increasing overall performance. We need to consider the implementation of overall change in WIYCR¡¦s culture in short term and in the long run separately. As Christmas peak season is coming, we must focus on implementing steps in trust building and working as a team. In the long run, main focus is placed on improving the communication and relationship between the resort and head quarters to improve the overall efficiency. However, reward system is not in the recommendation as it is not a very effective measure to change the working attitudes of local workers, due to the fact that they enjoy the relationships with coworkers, family and friends rather than monetary or other rewards.
The Europeans came to the East Indies and took over the land and the resources; this was wrong because it was unreasonable to use the wealth of the East Indies to purchase slaves. It was also wrong to enslave women and children.
As part of the Healthy People 2020 initiative, a national goal has been set to improve the health and well-being of women, infants, children, and families. This is an important public health movement considering their well-being determines the health of the next generation and can help predict future public health challenges for families, communities, and the health care system. In her essay, “Last Resorts: The Cost of Tourism in the Caribbean”, journalist Polly Pattullo presents an inside view of the resort industry in the Caribbean Islands, and how it truly operates. Tourism is the main industry of the Caribbean, formerly referred to as the West Indies, and it is the major part of the economy there. Pattullo’s essay mirrors the ideas of Trevor M.A. Farrell’s perspective “Decolonization in the English-Speaking Caribbean” in which he writes about the implicit meaning of the colonial condition. Pattollo’s essay illustrates that colonialism is present in the Caribbean tourism industry by comparing the meaning of it presented in Farrell’s perspective. In this essay I will explain how these two essays explain how decolonization hardly exists in the Caribbean.
The Hotel industry has become very important in the past years due to immense traveling and growth of international business. Hotel industry not only plays an important role in the life of people but as well as the economy of the country. Development and advancement in the Hotel industry have rapidly been taking place and especially since the rapid change in technology, it is very important for hotels to be promptly keeping up to date. When the hotel industry is spoken of, there are many famous hotels but one hotel company that has been outstanding in growth and other aspects of business, like in Leadership, Teamwork (Employee turnover), Motivation (Customer retention and satisfaction, Goals and objectives, (changing the way hotel business has worked), and Change within the company; structurally inside and physically outside, adding elements, like entertainment, gaming, and outdoor activities, is the Hilton Hotel Company.
In spite of having numerous structures in place to ensure a luxurious guest experience, the Oberoi Vanayvilas (OV) failed to provide a quality service to its hotel guest. To recover from this service failure, we recommend OV to sincerely apologize and ‘offer refund for the third night and a credit for the two nights for a future stay with additional hotel perks tobe used at OV within a year’ to the impacted guest. Main drivers for our recommendation are to convey a message that Oberoi sincerely cares about the customer inconvenience and wants its guest to revisit the hotel to win over the customer by its exemplary quality service.
1.2 Problem Formulation In the problem formulation part of my report I would describe the overall situation of the U.K Tourism industry. The service concept of “Simply Travel” will give us information about the services provided by the company. I will find out about the customers, competitors of the company. I will find out what political, economical, social and technological factors affecting the company and its demand situation.
International businesses are also finding new ways of increasing diversity abroad. Instead of using expatriate employees as management, they are starting to hire locals. Companies that operate abroad are realizing that using expatriate employees is not a permanent solution. They are often expensive, and are not capable of translating their skills into the new environment. In a company that operates globally, it is important that the company knows how to relate to the local markets, and a great way to do this is by hiring local talent. Hiring locally is cheaper, there is not a language barrier, and they are accustomed to the business environment in the area(5). They can also help the business by providing a new perspective into international markets, and offer ways that the company can improve their diversity abroa...
This case is a good example of mistrust, the reason why one group of people has come to not trust another group of people. While being a native of Virgin Gorda Island and working for the West Indies Yacht Club Resort, many natives see expatriate workers come and go. Some of the workers are managers, yet most of them are just temporary workers during the high peak seasons like late December through early July. During the times of working together the employees would become friends, and then the expatriate workers would travel back home after the peak season to never return leaving the natives in mistrust of the expatriates. Besides two totally different cultures not trusting each other, this would cause problems and turmoil to an already troubled West Indies Yacht Club Resort.
For the introduction, brief information regarding my purchase and the travel and tourism industry is presented. It was then followed by the explanation of the 2 chosen theories from two different chapters.
Simply speaking, a company’s structure and design can be viewed as its body, and its culture as its soul. Because industries and situations vary significantly, it would be difficult and risky to propose there is a “one size fits all” culture template that meets the needs of all organizations” (Nov 30, 2012). Those organizations who have shared beliefs and values and have organized methods on chain of command going to have positive outcomes. This will help shaping their employees views and performances. The growth and profit of the business relays on their employees and their performances. Culture is the core which will help and encourage all different level workers. If the core itself is weak, it will weaken the atmosphere of the business. Many companies announce that they have great culture but fail to implement to the lower level of workers. The basic issue is when organization has one set of culture and thinks one culture will meet the needs of all the workers. Each business is different and each individual is unique and have different beliefs and behaviors. The culture that is right for one individual might not work the same for the others. The ideal approach in this case would be, looking at the bigger picture of diverse working environment and give importance and respect to what are the ranges of business firms to achieve the perfect culture for organization. Positive Approach for Positive Results: Break the Cultural Clash at Work Shakinah Twinkle Chellappa Sullivan University MGT 510 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This proposal is being made to open up the cultural tent that has enclosed the organizational working atmosphere of the Roaring Dragon Hotel (RDH). Hotel International (HI) was brought on-board to help restore the hotel’s original potential. HI implemented several promising changes to the system, however, not neglecting the traditional and local norms of the hotel. This hurt the hotel to a great extent.
However, repatriation is one aspect of international assignments that has been somehow overlooked. Most literature on international human resource management (IHRM) for the most part focuses on expatriate settlement in the host country of assignment. Not as much of the required concentration has been focused on preparing expatriates for homecoming, notwithstanding the facts regarding the complexity of settling back at home and reports that nearly all expatriates are unhappy with the repatriation process. In view of the fact that the world is becoming more integrated leading to more global deployment of employees, the repatriation process calls for added attention (Furuya et al 2007).
