27. NCO Support Channel/ Chain of Command: There is an NCO Support Channel in place that consists of leaders in your work area. This is the Support Channel you will utilize whenever you have something that needs to be addressed. The leaders are there to help, guide, and mentor and train you to standard. The NCO Support Channel is the first step in communication between you and your peers/ subordinates. They are to be utilized first before jumping through the chain. Mentorship: Proper mentorship is a cornerstone of the military, with holistic mentorship, care, and tough love. What is a mentor? The word can be traced back to Homer's Odyssey as the name of a character who gave advice. A mentor possesses the wisdom only experience can provide, while the protégé is someone who is in the early stages of his or her career. While the protégé seems to reap the benefits of this relationship, it actually benefits both partners. The protégé receives guidance and helpful advice and invitations to industry events and introductions to higher-ups may be forthcoming. The mentor benefits from the opportunity to strengthen his or her leadership skills. One question is, if your child was to join the Army, would you feel comfortable having him/her being lead by your Soldiers? ANSWER _____ With that being said, no leader is perfect. Career counselors fill extremely demanding positions requiring an unusual amount of effort to accomplish their mission. The Table of Distribution (TDA) only allows one career counselor position, in every Battalion. The amount of personnel fluctuates between 300-800 Soldiers. As identified above MOS 79S, is currently experiencing a shortage causing an additional workload within a small team of NCOs adding additional stress to an already demanding position. The unique skill set a career counselor possesses are different from any other MOS. Career counselors utilize an automated system called RETAIN. Once a career counselor successfully graduates from the basic career counselor course, they receive access to RETAIN. HQDA and HRC both monitor this system. Only those authorized personnel career counselors have access to this automated system. The 25U Soldier’s job title is Signal Support Systems Specialist. Some of that Soldier’s job duties may include: installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting signal support equipment, radio systems, and data distribution systems; provides technical support and training for users. A Noncommissioned Officer’s (NCO) duties may include: supervising, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting signal support systems, radio systems, and battlefield automated systems; provides training and unit technical assistance; prepares maintenance and supply requests. After several years, assuming promotion and potential, your job title may change to Forward Signal Support NCO, Senior Communications Sergeant and so on. In the U.S. Army, you are required to do your military occupational specialty (MOS) and your duties as a Soldier. Thus, this is noticeable as a mobilized Soldier.

We can identify three major cultural dimensions that help us to understand what leaders must focus on as they guide the transition of the Army. First, professional Identity, which is guided by Soldiers at all levels who are striving for excellence in their functional specialty, i.e., HR Sergeants. Soldiers who have goals and ideals of the Army to ethically put service and duty first. HR Sergeants are trained and well educated in their field. They are taught to put Soldiers first and have great customer support skills. Second, community, the sense in which Soldiers stop thinking about “I” and start thinking “we”. The bond among units who not only believe in cohesion with Soldiers, but their families too. The HR Sergeants are there to take care of Soldiers when financial issues arise with them or their families and don’t back down until the situation is solved. Last, hierarchy, which leads to order and control and provides Soldiers with moral reference and a sense of direction. As our forefathers before us stated, ‘‘No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army (“The NCO Creed written by SFC Earle Brigham and Jimmie Jakes Sr”). These words to the Noncommissioned Officer should inspire us to the fullest with pride, honor, and integrity. The NCO creed should mean much more than just words whenever we attend an NCO’s school.
As a Non-commissioned Officer you can expect me to be a professional leader dedicated to taking care of soldiers, the mission, and the army way of life. You can expect me to use Army Regulations, Technical Manuals, and direct orders from my superiors as my guidance on what actions to take in each situation faced whether tactical or technical. In the United States Army, there are two categories of rank structure, the enlisted corps and the commissioned corps. The enlisted corps within itself contains leaders, who are referred to as Noncommissioned Officers, or NCOs. These individuals, whose ranks range from Sergeant to Sergeant Major, are responsible for implementing the guidance and command policies provided by the Commissioned Officers and commanders in their units. NCOs are also responsible for the welfare and training of junior personnel. The US Army provides regulations and manuals with step-by-step guidance for the most trivial of tasks, but it fails to spell out specific and concrete information on how to be an NCO.

I have had the opportunity and privilege to work with a variety of military and non-military leaders who taught me important lessons in leadership. I obtained these lessons through direct mentorship or observation as I watched how they conducted themselves. Those lessons, combined with my own personal beliefs and experiences, have helped me develop my own leadership philosophy. My leadership philosophy focuses on balancing mission accomplishment with Soldier welfare.
