Henry Kissinger is quoted as saying that the task of a leader is to get people from where they are to where they have not been. This is also a reflection of the work of Vroom & Jago (2007) who state that leaders should motivate others to do great things. With correctional workers, effective leadership and management is essential to the safety of other workers. To those housed in correctional facilities, and to the community at large. How new leaders are trained and prepared for their important role is essential to the success of correctional institutions. This paper will address a review of best practice regarding leadership in correctional facilities as well as an analysis of Corrections Corporation of America’s (CCA) Samberg Program. Finally, the paper will address a specific training evaluation model to enhance the program.
Over the course of two years, I was able to create bonds and gain long lasting mentors from these experiences. In this program, I did case studies on sexual health, neurology, and public health. With these case studies, I was able to practice leadership skills and investigative thinking along with my peers. Through the Emory Pipeline Program, I also learned new technology within the medical field and how the new technology aided our local hospitals. These experiences opened doors for me to explore what my career calling was.
How do senior leaders set your organization’s vision and values? The organizations vision and values are implemented through daily reinforcement of our objectives, therefore establishing guidelines in which to follow with reference to agency policies and directives. Through mentoring and daily interaction, senior leadership reinforce the agency goals and future commitments. Communication is a key factor in establishing the agency’s vision, therefore providing a guideline to achieving future aspirations. In order to effectively address current and future requirements that are essential in capturing the vision, senior leadership convey the agencies vision and values with our stakeholders through conferences, committee meetings and everyday
There are lot of theories and opinions about what makes a good leader. People who want to become a good leader not only have to have the will to take on the job, but they need to have certain traits and qualities that are characteristic of a good leader. The trait theory of leadership supports this claim that some people are endowed with certain characteristics that make them more capable of being a good leader than others. Many leaders and researchers have come up with certain traits that make people great leaders, whether it is being a leader in a business, organization or a leader of a sports team.
The DC internship can help me further my skills/abilities in professionalism, because I can learn how everything should be done in the most in the most professional way. Effectiveness of organizations depends on various factors. Nonetheless, it is firmly believed, by most practitioners and behavioural scientists, that leadership is a phenomenon which is crucial in achieving this goal (Yukl, 2013). As leadership is contextually bound, it cannot be completely understood from a single perspective. There are other elements that must be considered in order to do so, such as: the leader, the follower, the context and the interactions among them (Rumsey, 2013). The topic is even more fascinating in regards to the fact that most individuals are in some way a leader, a follower, or both. Despite the fact that most of these relationships go without particular notice, others have tremendous influence on the today’s world.
Internships completed by students in certain degree programs are quite popular in most colleges and universities. An internship is used so classroom based learning in a degree program can be applied to practical situations in the real world (Jordan, Burns, Bedard & Barringer, 2007). When students are placed with an agency, there is a real possibility that a portion of students will witness actions they believe is unethical or illegal. During a study conducted within four universities, many students that participated in an internship program within the criminal justice system reported that they had observed behavior they suspected to be illegal behavior for a law enforcement agency. (Jordan et al. 2007). Due to this ongoing problem, colleges
The accelerated school counseling program with the yearlong internship is another reason I am interested in the University of North Carolina. The yearlong internship will be the most beneficial aspect of the program because of the opportunity to fully develop relationships with both students and staff, as well as have the opportunity to handle a wide range of issues that occur during a school year.
Internships are becoming the norm in today’s ever changing society. Both paid and unpaid internships allow the intern to learn about a particular field or industry, gain experience in that particular field or industry, and build a network that can be leverage for future good. These benefits combined prove to be very useful and significant to the intern because it’s a differentiator from those individuals who did not have an internship. Given the very competitive job market for recent college graduates, the many benefits of internships have caused many interns to pass up pay in return for the aforementioned benefits. Internships have become so standard in the workplace that the National Association of Colleges and Employers recently reported that 75 percent of employers prefer job candidates with relevant work experience, while more than 90 percent prefer to hire interns who have worked for their organization (Bacon, 2011). When it comes to hiring full-time employees, 42% of graduates with internships who applied for a job received an job offer compared to...
The typical collation of Josh, Jessica and Ashok in the above case is a typical show case of the transformations in the workplace reasoning and due dealing. Demonstrated here is how rapid the organization cultures are changing drastically considering the fact that a culture is collate of perceptions (Miller, 2012). Josh’s approach of attaining goals represents the modern perception in work theories usually held by the generation Y. On the other hand, Sarah goes the seasoned way of responding to protocols and work bureaucracies, responding to considerations of constraints and knowing their jurisdiction boundaries. In both cases, there could be a point of consideration, however, there is need for both of them to
One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.

“Leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes” (Rost, 1931). But in today’s time, the styles of leadership are changed every time a new technology is invented or discovered so there is lack of persistency. The only thing which manages to stay constant is the principles of carrying out business activities. There are philosophies and ideologies on leadership which can be used in any time period as they are mostly a reflection of the principles of leadership. Theorists and authors like Hobbes (1679), Lewin (1947) and Aristotle (384–322 B.C.), in their time have produced enough material which can be put into use by modern day leaders and managers. Philosophers like Aristotle, who was known to be one of the most business-oriented and practical philosopher of his time, his work is still used by businesses today because of their relevance as he is interested in defining principles in terms of the ethics of leadership (Santa Clara University). In the essay I have tried to show how leadership has adapted to the changes around them and compared to the past and what circumstances caused need to change it. As a layman, anyone would think that the principles centuries ago will be very different to what we follow now but after studying on Hobbes, Lewin and Aristotle it has made a big impact on my way of thinking because the work produced by them still has more relevance compared to some of the work produced now. I have tried to explain the evolvement of leadership through three aspects which are psychology, sociology and philosophy.
Initially when I was looking for an internship, my goal was to find one that complemented my double major in criminology & criminal justice and psychology. During my search, I found some reputable organizations, but quickly discovered that they either required an extended training/orientation period or were not compatible with my schedule. Thus in finding the Urban Education Leaders Internship Program (UELIP) of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), which primarily focuses on an interest in education and public policy, I was skeptical that my interest in criminal psychology would be met. However, I quickly learned that this was not the case. Not only did my internship with DCPS indirectly appeal to my major, but it also provided me with a valuable experience in which I acquired fundamental skills and learned more about myself.
I feel they’re more likely to listen to me lecturing them on a valuable lesson or giving them some pointers about college especially since I’m closer to their age. Going into the internship, I wasn’t expecting that I would like my role as much as I do now, I can see how relatable I am to them, but still be looked at as an adult that their have respect for. I can see the changes in the dynamic of the program from February to now. Especially when it comes to them expressing themselves and learning how to write them out in poetic forms. As a future psychologist, I feel this was the best internship I could have taken for me to realize I want to continue working with adolescents. I realized, I want to continue making great lasting impressions on teenagers life especially gearing them in the right direction. The journal “Professional Identity Development: A grounded Theory of Transformation Task of New Counselors” discusses the identity and role of a counselor, how the approach and roles are changing for new counselors and how the new method is effective.
