How do you promote and ensure ethical behavior in all interactions? In law enforcement we are always in the public view, therefore it is essential and critical to the performance of our duties to act in an ethical behavior, which promotes trust and reassurance that we will uphold our responsibilities to serve and protect with honor and loyalty. Any infractions regarding unethical behavior is immediately investigated by the agency and OIG for corrective action, if warranted and is immediately enforced. The agency provides quarterly training to insure ethical behavior is reinforced. Ethics training is conducted through via web based training and also during annual training. Agency supervisors are responsible for insuring all ethics training is completed prior to established
Officers are known as public servants, they are held at higher standards than everyday citizens. According to Wyatt-Nichol & Franks(2009) when officers behave unethically, it is a violation of public trust and damages the image of law enforcement everywhere (p. 40). Officer should receive in-death training of cases that make headlines within the newspapers or media. For example, the Freddie Gray or Eric Garner case could be used in scenarios with the steps taken to avoid any ethical dilemmas they could possibly run into. Updated training should be conducted every 6 months for ethics alone in addition to the yearly training that’s already in place. The civilian review board can recommend more training of officers that engage in unethical behavior or misconduct. Intense training, followed through with morals is important factors to avoiding the civilian review board and their process in reviewing investigations against officers. When all training officers receive has been overlooked and failed to comply. Police officers should be held accountable for their actions, through training officers learn to understand their position and need within the community. Although training is offered yearly and on an as need basics, officers are held to a high standard within their community. Some tend to lose sight of their mission of daily duties which are to maintain order and
Society impacts ethical behavior of law enforcement by holding them to a higher standard of expectation. Police officers act as protectors and liaisons in highly stressful situations with the power to make decisions over society. Holding this position requires trust and the ability to lead by example. Police officers may have to be able to recognize the ethical dilemmas, decide the
One of the ways is try to monitor police behavior, if a situation occur where there is misconduct keep a watch on their behavior. We are held responsible for our subordinate, so we have to check on their integrity and ethics. What first need to be discuss is the ethics and code that every police administration must up hold. Integrity is to be honest and show good morals that helpful in goals of protections and service (Martin, 2011). Martin (2011) gave a list of characteristics that an officer must display to have integrity. One if the characteristics is prudence which means having the ability to make hard decisions in conflict situations and pick the best action that is need for the situation. The next one that I consider to be a big factor in preventing/ stopping corruption is trust. Having trust among officers and the public, other officers, and the supervisors is very important (Martin, 2011). Then he mention effacement of self-interest that is a characteristics that is needed with the helping of corruption. Also there is courage and honesty to know whats right and wrong and to admit it. Justice is another one that is owed to the public and community (Martin, 2011). Last is responsibility in which one takes ownership in what they did
Ways that I would recognize staff members is by organizing events such as Teacher Appreciation Day or by reaching out with social media. By organizing Teacher Appreciation Day, the staff members of Cal High would be rewarded with awards that represent the appreciation the student body has towards them and for all the work that they have done. Students could make cards or posters throughout their classrooms and could have their peers sign them by writing thank you notes or expressions of appreciation. Students that highly value their teachers could also recognize them by rewarding them with class parties or small gatherings that are dedicated to appreciating
The law enforcement officer has a conduct code that they are to adhere to so that they can impose the laws that are government for them to enforce to those that want to break them. They are to protect victims from being hurt as well as making sure that the individual knows his or her rights. Moral and ethics acts as an aid to make sure that the officer makes ethical choices when it comes to right and wrong and not based on an individual’s past experiences dealing with similar issues. The method that a law enforcement officer takes in a professional capacity is their ability to accept all that comes with the decisions they make in the community while upholding the departments reputation. Making the most ethical decision is simple, you have consequences for your actions that you take as well as choices and options. This is important because the community depends on the law enforcement officer making moral and ethical
In a firm, management and leadership are important and needed. Leadership and management are similar. Actually, leadership and management are totally different. The leadership would influence the firm. The leader would have difference leadership styles to lead the subordinate.
When the leadership applies effective strategies to creating and maintaining an ethical environment the end result will be fewer acts of police misconduct. The type of strategies applied to the police department for creating an ethical environment begins with the development of an enforceable code of conduct. The police code of conduct includes specific behaviors that will not be tolerated by the agency as well as the expected behaviors of the officer. For example police are expected to act fairly and impartially but they are not allowed to violate the due process rights of the
We as a department must establish not only a minimal standard of conduct for our officers but also aspire to set high goals for all our employees. We as public employees must strive to be vigilant against corruption and remain ethically sound. The trust and confidence of the citizens of the state is an important matter that must be maintained. The Policing profession is a noble profession and attracts individuals who have certain characteristics such as being responsible and having an authoritative personality and one who acts on behalf of others without concern for their own safety and well being. Many of these officers have a preconceived notion of what the profession is about and how to make the world a safer place for all citizens. ("Noble cause corruption," 2010) (Martinelli, 2006)
...d procedures that help regulate an officer’s conduct. While these are a good base point for how an officer should act, a lot of times these regulations can be very detailed or too general. This is where ethical training comes in to
One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.
It’s important to note that individual officers are direct representatives of their perspective agencies and conducts their assigned duties according to strict standards of those agencies (Doerner, 2012). One way to ensure these standards hold merit is to have the agency receive accreditation (Doerner, 2012). “Accreditation means that a law enforcement agency complies with a host of operational standards designed to represent the current “best practices” in the industry” (Doerner, 2012, p. 472). The goal of becoming an accredited agency is to earn a professional reputation (Doerner, 2012).
Ethical principles are very important when distinguishing when implementing the wrong and right behavior comes into effect. When officers fail to do the right thing, this may lead to the community and its citizens to not fully trust them based on their actions. When it comes to officers interfering with the communities trust, this certainly makes it much harder for them to be able to work with them and obtain any information needed. “In essence, officers swear to be honest, upstanding citizens. They promise to be part of the solution, not part of the problem, and above all else, they promise to follow the rules, whether they like or agree with them or not” (The Importance of Ethics in Policing). Although, mistakes are very common within our human race, officers should definitely be honest with any situation that goes out of their control to seek the proper help needed. Not only the citizens, but the people within the law enforcement will respect an officer more if they were open and honest from their own faults. It is very crucial for the law enforcement to possess ethical behavior, especially within this type of criminal justice field. “Within an agency’s code of ethics are specific provisions promoting the safeguard of lives and property, the importance of avoiding bias and the understanding that the badge is a symbol of the public trust” (The Importance of Ethics in Policing). Law enforcement are to be the examples to the community and demonstrate the proper way of how to handle situations and obey the law. Not only is police officers are to make sure those within the public are following the laws, but rather live by them personally. There is numerous cases where you can catch police officers not demonstrating the law themselves, such as: traffic violations, using victims for their own personal greed, instead of reporting issues to the leader, they decide
My biggest personal leadership failure occurred earlier this year when I worked at Einstein Bros Bagels at Coffman Union. I stayed there from January until April making and serving bagels to customers. However, I had the morning shift, the busiest period of the day. Long lines would form every time I was there, and sometimes I couldn’t catch up. One day in April, my co-worker, a veteran making bagels, was absent, and someone who didn’t have as much experience replaced her. What followed was a mess. My team chemistry with the replacement was dreadful, and a ton of people had to wait a while for their orders. My manager saw the incident, and after my shift was over, he gave me the option of leaving my job. I accepted, but my self-confidence was in a state that was beyond repair. It was one of the first times that I felt I let others down with my work performance. I learned that I shouldn’t expect to be great at everything and that I should analyze my weaknesses before taking on something challenging.
Ethical police conduct. My idea of ethical police conduct or code of conduct if you will is as follows; do your utmost to obey the laws you are sworn to enforce. Do nothing that willingly damages the public trust, their confidence in your abilities and the abilities of the police department or harms the public in any illegal way. The ability of a police officer to violate this code of ethics is sadly very easy as most things that are considered ethical are in the eye of the beholder.
Many department now have code of ethics in which officers are expected to follow. Schafer states that “ethic codes and guidelines protect professionals from themselves, as well as from those who, they perceive, abuse the power of their profession.” (Schafer, n.d.). These Code of Ethics set guidelines for ideal behavior for officers to follow and is expected to be
