Law enforcements have the moral responsibility to make decisions for our society to become better as a whole. It is very vital for officers to follow protocols when on duty to ensure, they are making the proper judgement calls when encountered by any given situation. In the criminal-justice field, especially as an officer, there has to be a moral understanding where he or she possesses the characteristic of doing the right thing at all times to ensure public safety. The community is very diverse within its population, with law enforcement creating relationships whereas the community feels protected it can certainly decrease numbers of incidents developing. Ethical principles are very important when distinguishing when implementing the wrong and right behavior comes into effect. When officers fail to do the right thing, this may lead to the community and its citizens to not fully trust them based on their actions. When it comes to officers interfering with the communities trust, this certainly makes it much harder for them to be able to work with them and obtain any information needed. “In essence, officers swear to be honest, upstanding citizens. They promise to be part of the solution, not part of the problem, and above all else, they promise to follow the rules, whether they like or agree with them or not” (The Importance of Ethics in Policing). Although, mistakes are very common within our human race, officers should definitely be honest with any situation that goes out of their control to seek the proper help needed. Not only the citizens, but the people within the law enforcement will respect an officer more if they were open and honest from their own faults. It is very crucial for the law enforcement to possess ethical behavior, especially within this type of criminal justice field. “Within an agency’s code of ethics are specific provisions promoting the safeguard of lives and property, the importance of avoiding bias and the understanding that the badge is a symbol of the public trust” (The Importance of Ethics in Policing). Law enforcement are to be the examples to the community and demonstrate the proper way of how to handle situations and obey the law. Not only is police officers are to make sure those within the public are following the laws, but rather live by them personally.
