A Pyramid of Leadership Success in Nursing There are lot of theories and opinions about what makes a good leader. People who want to become a good leader not only have to have the will to take on the job, but they need to have certain traits and qualities that are characteristic of a good leader. The trait theory of leadership supports this claim that some people are endowed with certain characteristics that make them more capable of being a good leader than others. Many leaders and researchers have come up with certain traits that make people great leaders, whether it is being a leader in a business, organization or a leader of a sports team. His resume consists of 10 national March Madness championships, which includes seven consecutive championships, four perfect seasons, one losing season and set the all-time record for 88 consecutive victories, all while coaching for the UCLA Bruins (Wooden 2009). A lot of the times, the first type of medication we may offer a patient may not be successful, but that doesn 't mean we should stop helping this patient. As nurses, we always have to be on our toes and be able to adapt to any situation and come up with new ideas or solutions to problems we may face. As a leader, many people will look at your character, or your condition according to Wooden. He explains that ability may get you to the top, but character keeps you there (Wooden 2009). Wooden goes on to explain the importance of skill as a leader, an important thing in nursing. He explains that complete competence is required. You must be able to execute all elements of your job or you become partial performer. Experience is valuable. Skill is more valuable. Together they are invaluable (Wooden 2009). Every Leader is defined by his or her qualities and characteristics. These can determine how effective a leader has become. This statement has been true throughout the history of mankind. However, there are only a handful of specific qualities that can truly determine if someone is an effective leader.

Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.
The nursing career has a growing workforce, spurred on by the high demand for caregivers. The growing need for nurses has caused in influx of new nurses, graduating from school and ready to begin their career. Although there are many different work settings for nurses, one universal aspect of assisting new nurses is nursing leadership. Leaders within nursing are tasked with assisting new nurses as well as those who are veteran nurses, and their role is indispensible. “Health leaders model the behavior expected in the organization” (Ledlow & Stephens, 2018). Susan Eckert, the senior vice-president of nursing and chief nursing executive at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, is a prime example of a nursing leader.

Unlike during the Trait Era in the study of leader where people are born with leadership ability, we are living in the contingency era where leadership can be taught and become something that can be adopted (Nahavandi, 2015) . Some of the methods that are used to enhance people’s leadership ability are by evaluating and assisting various factors and personality of the person to determine the strength and weakness of the person. Other issues may extend to role confusion (Fealy, et al., 2011), isolation, poor resources of time/finances, high workloads (Peltzer, et al., 2015) and stress levels, which affect the ability to undertake stressful or challenging situations. Success is not given to you or something you are born with it’s something that is earned through morals and hard work. The simple idea of success comes in many forms and can be interpreted in many of different ways. John Wooden is one of the most renowned basketball coaches in the world. He also had a variety of different accolades to his name. He was the head coach at UCLA for over 20 years where he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period. He also was named national coach of the year six times. He played basketball at Purdue where he was the first to be named All-American three times.
Although there are qualities that often create successful leaders, there are not any qualities that one must have in order to be a leader. In other words, there is no criteria list that is needed.
There are countless amounts of ways to be a great leader. A great leader is someone who knows and understands what his/her people need. Such as their experience in education, and how loved they are by their people, as well as how they inspired their people making them such great leader. One of the characteristics of a great leader is their experience in education.
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)

First we have to ask ourselves, what makes a good leader? Depending on who you ask, that answer will vary. A good leader is someone who is very goal oriented, but bases their goals as a group, not on one’s own desires. A goal oriented leader would use language such as, “We need to get this done,” rather than, “I need this done”. An effective leader is passionate, leads by example, works in teams, advocates for others, communicates in problem solving, evaluates outcomes, and makes needed changes to provide quality care (Sullivan, Kiovsky, Mason, Hill, & Dukes, 2015). It is important that nurse leaders are assertive, committed, make ethical and competent decisions, employ critical thinking, and implement changes based on current or future nursing situations and dilemmas (Dyess, Sherman, Pratt, & Chiang-Hanisko, 2016). Nursing leadership also involves exploring needs, improving methods, creating models, and applying evidence-based research (Institute of Medicine, 2010). When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
