Having gone through my primary level and the secondary level, it gave me the opportunity and privilege of getting to like the manner at which the writers were using different types of writing techniques to make their stories interesting. It gave me that burning desire to be among the top writers in the universe when my time comes. Throughout this essay, I am going to give some of the reasons as to why I decided to enroll in the course and the advantages of writing towards my academic skills and professional life.
We are a family of six made of four boys and two girls. I being the second born, I had to follow the footsteps of our first born to ensure that the daily needs of the family are attained. We were not privileged enough to have both of our parents due to a road accident that claimed their lives. I decided to take an English course to go hand in hand with my writing desire. To my surprise, I realized that some of the lessons we were being taught in the course I had gone through them while learning how to write. One of the main requirements in every college is that one must write a proposal. To people like me, coming up with a proposal writing was not a problem since I already had professional knowledge of how to write essays and projects. In his essay, "Teach Writing as a Process not a Product," Donald Murray outlines the major difference between the traditional pedagogy that directed the teaching of writing in the past and his newly hailed model. Traditionally, Murray explains, English teachers were taught to teach and evaluate students' writing as if it was a finished product of literature when, as he has discovered, students learn better if they're taught that writing is a process. For Murray, once teachers regard writing as a process, a student-centered, or writer-centered, curriculum falls into place. Over the course of this fall semester, my development as a writer have transformed positively. I feel more confident organizing my ideas because my literacy development has improved. Specific improvements that I can recall reflecting back to the three major assignments in this course are the thesis statement construction, forming my ideas together and write clear sentences. Another personal accomplishment would be the understanding and implementation of the rhetorical terms. Throughout my years in college, mainly I had struggle writing in English because English is my second language. However, I used all the tools and knowledge available resulting in a noticeable progress as a writer.
As a first time, English student in the university, I begin to understand what writing and literacy means. As I work halfway through out my semester, I have come to read and learn about different situations and meanings in many articles and books. Taking this course allowed me to understand and develop my writing process even further than I did before. As I read these articles, I notice certain aspects that these authors were trying to teach and inform us about. I shall demonstrate and identify what I have learned throughout this semester by creating points below.
This year was a true test to my abilities as a writer. Until my last year of middle school, I could not write. In eighth grade, I was forced to learn how. I was drilled with grammar, and I was tasked with multiple essays. This year, I was able to take the skills I learned in eighth grade and put them to the test.
It is my belief that through this class and the tools provided, that my growth as a writer has grown through leaps and bounds I would never have assumed possible. It is not so much the skill I refer to, although I would think skill has gone up in some levels as well, but more so the appreciation for the craft of writing itself. Intially, at the start of this class my sole goal was to further my understanding and appreciation of the writer's and books that I so love to read. Through further evaluation within the first week, a few other goals came to mind, of which were making writing a habit, finishing what I start, stop second guess my writing skills and making effective use of detail and describtion. Over the course of my academic career, I have faced my fair share of challenges. From the time I started school as a young child, education did not come as naturally to me as it did for a majority of my classmates. The most memorable of these struggles, and the one I am most grateful to have gone through, was mastering the art of reading and writing. For a vast majority of my elementary schooling, I was pulled out of my classroom environment to work with a special tutor to strengthen my ELA skills. With haste, I began to see the hours I put in materialize into successes, and every milestone I hit filled me with the joy of a job adequately done.
Writing has become a major method of my expressing beliefs and thoughts. I have had the greatest of writing and English role models. The success of my predecessors has shown in magnitudes through me. They subjected the coal known as my writing to heat and pressure. Eventually, my writing became an uncut diamond; rough around the edges, but a diamond no less. While environmental factors affect a student’s writing, constant review and practice polishes the diamond that lies in every writers mind.
Truth be told I’m not a fan of writing. When I was told I'd be taking an English class, I was a little worried. Writing is something that I don’t enjoy much of. Maybe it’s because I do it on a daily basis for work. In my career, I’m writing memorandums and orders daily.
I have never considering writing to be one of my strong suites when it came it academics, perhaps adequate at best. Especially when it came to writing on a subject based on information or statistics, however after the last few essays, not only do I have a new found confidence in my writing skills, but I’m incredibly excited to write about new and more challenging subjects. The last three essays walked me through the writing process slowly but surely, challenging me a little more each time. As I approached the next assignment I took what I had learned from the previous one and made sure to apply it to the assignment I was currently working on.
As I reflect back on these last eight weeks of class in this semester, I’ve to realize that a writing process is an art form, depictions of words in expression of emotion creating words in actions to reveal the elements of visual images, storytelling. I've also learned to become a good writer you must challenge your confidence in your individual creative mind, first by brainstorming a topic of discussion, analyze in structure viewpoints of that topic, in also by doing research in finding references points. I can say one of my biggest challenges in my Illustration, was my thesis statement, especially when it came to expressing my personal viewpoints in experience about my brother life, when it came to my narrative essay, it was tough and
If it were not for my brother and sister, I think I would have been severely depressed. My older brother and sister re-assured me that everything would be fine and so life went on, thank God for my siblings. To say I thrived and succeeded would not be accurate, I struggled through high school and through Jr college and although I was actively involved in student government, I failed to graduate and left school. During this time, there was little if any support from my mother or step-father and I recall no spiritual guidance either.
I have fairly basic experience with academic writing. I excel in writing essays for courses in history, english, and art history, in high school as well as my first few years of college. I have experience with many historical and analytical papers throughout college and high school. I am able to write long (10 pages) papers with efficiency and organization and have always been commended for my writing skills. I am also an avid creative writer. I write a lot of lyrics/poems in my free time as well as a collection of short stories. Although reading had always come naturally to me (I scored an 800 on the reading portion of the SAT), I used to inform others that I would rather have someone else do the writing for me, as I was happy simply reading. Unfortunately, that cute line did little to alleviate my writing assignments in school, and so I accepted the necessity of writing, without falling in love with it. During my junior year, I began to truly understand that while reading was my passion, writing was a skill, one that would become even more important to me as I grew. The importance of writing, to me, can be summed in a single word: communication. Writing, in its most basic form, is the distillation of ideas into a format whereby others can come to understand those ideas. Personally, my life “plan” is to become a wife, a mother, and an English teacher. In each of these facets, communication is vital, integral to the role. Although I don’t anticipate writing five-paragraph essays to my children every day, the skill of effective communication taught through writing can only improve my own ability to share my ideas.
Throughout my educational matriculation and the eventual declaration of English being my specific realm of study in college, I have not considered myself to be a creative writer. I have progressed through modes of writing, development, and growth. From creative writing as a middle school student, to research and theory based writing as a graduate student, I have witnessed a growth in how my writing is created, organized, and executed. In the reevaluation and identification of my initial experiences with writing, I identify with my seminal experience in the context of a formal educational setting, which has played a major role in my development as a writer and a teacher of writing.
