Part One I have fairly basic experience with academic writing. I excel in writing essays for courses in history, english, and art history, in high school as well as my first few years of college. I have experience with many historical and analytical papers throughout college and high school. I am able to write long (10 pages) papers with efficiency and organization and have always been commended for my writing skills. I am also an avid creative writer. I write a lot of lyrics/poems in my free time as well as a collection of short stories. Although I have had nothing published in the past, I dream of becoming an author and getting my writing out to the public. My strengths as a writer are my creativity, organization, and flow. I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. Have you ever done something and felt so confident about it and thought that you would do well but it turns out that, but it ends up that the result you would get is not what you got? I did I actually had to go through the whole process of getting better, I learned to grow gradually as a writer. When I first started writing wrote I earned As and Bs. Then I started the started the summer bridge program here at Washington Adventist University and found out that writing in High School is a lot different from college. It is even harder to write an essay because you have to be sure to add in enough details based on the topic and right when you think you are done you must check on grammarly to revise your essay and make sure you check your work. Or even the writing center but because it was a summer program so the writing center was not open at the moment. When I received my papers I learned how not
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
How does an artist create a painting? He or she cannot simply look at a canvas and a picture appear. The artist must be equipped with proper tools to create a masterpiece: paint and brushes. The same can be said about writers. Writers are not born with the knowledge of writing an attractive paper. They must be given tools of writing and shown how to utilize them. Artists and writers without proper tools will be nothing more than blank canvases and empty pages. I used to be a blank canvas, but a teacher gave me the tools I needed, and now I am a polished portrait.
Figuring out what you want to do with your life is a complex challenge. Until recently, I was completely unsure of what I want to do with my life academically and professionally. I would stumble across a field that would seem intriguing for a moment, then I’d become uninterested. It seemed I hadn’t found my niche. For awhile, I never really connected my desire to communicate with others with potential fields. Once I made the connection, I knew immediately that I wanted to pursue writing. Writing has been my most challenging requirement through school. I am not a very experienced writer. I was not required to write much in high school until my last semester. My last semester in high school, about a year and half ago, I took GENR-091 which is the last time I have written a paper longer than one page. That was my most recent writing class; I am rusty to say the least.
Most of my writings have been those of the classroom assignment variety. The assignments consist of free writes, essays, research and term papers, but none of these come to mind as an experience worth noting. I never had a writing published or received any type of an award. I seldom did any wrtiting out of school, or writing for leisure as some might say. The bottom line is, I just don't have te time to write for leisure, with a full time job, attending night school, and raising two children, my day are consumed rapidly. If I did have the time to sit down and write, I'm not sure that I would write. I keep most of my thoughts to myself, not on paper. Although it does feel nice to express my thoughts and feelings onto the page. I can see my thoughts unfold, and I can organize them to develop new ideas.
As mentioned countless times above, during my time in this class, I would love to obtain the writing skill of writing papers that are more condensed and attentive to the matter I am addressing at that point in time. Professionals and even non-professionals will not want to waste their time reading something that could have been addressed in a fewer sentences and words. If I want to stand out in a crowd of equally educated occupational therapists, I need to make sure my writing is formatted and addressed in a professional manner. As a result, I am looking forward to learning how to make myself look as professional as I can in writing. Nevertheless, with learning to write proper papers and documents comes the challenge of making sure enough time is included within my study of this particular course.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
The process of examining me as a writer is not easy. Writing, for me, has never been an easy task. Many times I sat for hours contemplating my blank piece of paper just trying to figure out how to begin to write the creative writing assignment due in a few days for my high school English class. I knew that learning to write well took patience and practice, much like learning any other skill. I remember the long hard hours I spent developing my skills as a skateboarder. I knew that I had to find the same attitude to develop my writing skills. I knew also that I wanted to continue my education and pursue a law degree. Definitely my writing skills had to be developed.
In high school, my English teacher always emphasized about the importance of writing and pointed out how students lack the writing skills nowadays. In my senior year of high school, she spent most of time on teaching us how to create an outline, citation styles, and some writing tips. At the end of that year, she made us to write a 16-page research paper as a senior project. It was a nightmare when I was working on it, but I have learned several things from that project and from this experience, I don’t get easily panic when I face the heavy amount of writing assignments.
To succeed as an author courses and requirements are needed to be met. A college/bachelor’s degree is usually a necessity for working as a full-time author or writer. Due to literature skills being essential, employers prefer those that have degrees in journalism, english, and communications. Work experiences in high school can also support you in future resumes and interviews. In a professional environment, there are many supervisors who have little to no writing experience before they start a management position. This largely attributed to employees of companies maintaining a high work ethic for many years and proving they have what it takes to take over these leading roles (Mabrito, 1997). When these employees started their jobs they likely did not have the expectation that they would move to such an important role in the company so furthering their education after high school was not a priority. This can cause a poor representation of the company from the less than professional writing skills a person may have. For these businesses, it would be beneficial to actively seek out employees who they see potential in and send them to further their writing
